Around the Grounds

Mount Carmel has continued its strong year in Diocesan and MISA sport this year gaining yet another trophy to add to our already well established cabinet. From the 5 teams who have managed to make it to their MISA finals the mixed 7-9 Ultimate Frisbee team came away with an upset win over Magdalene. This adds to the 2 trophies already won last term bringing our yearly tally to 3. We have also had multiple athletes at our school achieve great things in recent weeks which are outlined below. Parents and guardians are encouraged to reach out to help recognise the sporting achievements of their children. We also have some fantastic leaders across our college community who are blossoming in their leadership. Below is pre pre-game speech prepared by Mia Aiono for the inaugural MISA U16’s Girls Rugby League team which shows the fantastic college community we have on and off the sporting field.

'Okay team, look I know we are down so many players but this is an important game. We must not focus on what we don’t have but instead what we do. We are all GREAT players and we have come a long way from where we began. A good friend of mine told me, be better than your opposition and it has really stuck with me and I hope it sticks with you too. Girls I know your faith has dropped with all our players almost out but can I tell you. BE HUNGRY & STAY HUNGRY. If you want to win then there is nothing stopping you. Rugby is not just a physical game but a mental game. So when we go out there let’s play with our hearts and stay hungry. Let’s bring it home for all the girls who missed out on playing today, for our school and for ourselves. I need you all to step up and play your best because I believe in us !! & regardless of who is on the field if we all play at our best we can win.’

Diocesan Cross Country

Mount Carmel had three students qualify for the NSWCCC Cross Country held in Sydney. The Mount Carmel kids did really well with the following results.

Monique and Ethan have now qualified for NSW All Schools. Ethan's Wollongong team also won a Gold Medal in the Under 15 boys' team event with all 6 Wollongong boys finishing in the top 10. Congratulations to these three outstanding athletes.

MISA Term 2
 Finals - Results
Congratulations to all our MVP’s from our MISA teams this week.
Indoor Cricket 10-12 Girls
Coach: Mr O'Connell
Win 74-69
Joint MVP Esha Jadhav & Jorja Lewis
3rd Place Play Off VS MAG
The girls came into the match full of confidence that they could take out one final victory against a Magdalene team that they had previously defeated all the way back in round 1. Jess won the toss and elected to bowl first. MCCC bowled outstandingly keeping Magdalene to only 69 runs. The girls came to the crease with an easy task ahead of them and were able to comfortably win the game with a total of 74 runs.

Congratulations to the girls for finishing 3rd overall. Thankyou for an outstanding season full of beautiful bowling, fantastic fielding, high class hitting and excellent enthusiasm. Well done!

Basketball 7-9 Boys
Coach: Mr Rodoreda
3rd Place Playyoff VS MAS
Win 33-28
MVP - Adrian Capitly

The boys played hard against a tough team to secure 3rd place in the MISA junior basketball competition. The whole team had time on the court in what proved to be a physical game. Our backs worked hard on defence to keep (yet again) a taller team from the rebounds, while our guards worked hard putting pressure on the ball carriers and making fast breaks that kept us just ahead of a motivated opposition. As they have all season, the team worked hard on and off the court, supporting and encouraging each other. It has been a privilege to work with this team, and I am sure they will continue to represent the school proudly in basketball in the years to come.
Basketball 7-9 Girls
Coach: Mr Turnbull
Final VS THAS
Loss 43-13
MVP chelsea Baltazar
Despite a sustained effort our girls were unable to beat this talented team. Chelsea and Isabella as point guards searched for a way throughout the defensive zone. Sophie as team captain rallied the team and kept spirits up. Eva, Alana and Gabby stood up against stronger opposition. Beth and Veronique defended against the opposition's best players and did well. Lovinia,Ysabelle and Evangeline all played their part. I am proud of these girls that they never gave up, showing true fighting spirit. Thanks to Mario our Assistant Coach. Much appreciation to the support of our scorers:- Danijela, Emellia and Carla.
Netball 11-12 Girls
Coach: Ms Armour
Final VS SPT
Loss 29-34
The girls gave their absolute all in our final against St Pats. We were up by 1 goal at half time but our opposition responded strategically and came out on top. Congratulations to the girls who have come together as a team that is supportive of each other and cohesive on the court. I look forward to taking the girls to Dio on Friday and CCC later this year.

Hockey 7-9 Boys
Coach: Mr Rees
3rd Place Playoff VS SBCC
Loss 3-0
MVP Harry Roach

Not the high note we wanted to finish the season on, however experimenting with a few students out of position our attack and defensive structures were a little out of sorts. The team thoroughly impressed this year, with an almost entirely new team on the field with very little hockey experience, yet all the boys demonstrated a real interest in wanting to know the technical aspects of the game. Hopefully many will be back next year and will feature in our Dio team in the coming years.
Rugby League 10-12 Boys
Coaches: Mr Kawa & Mr Harpley
Final VS JTCC
Loss 14-16
MVP Cyrell Cisneros
The boys took on the heavyweights in John Therry in this epic final. The game was even for the most part with our boys completing their sets at a high rate which enabled them to keep the pressure on JT for majority of the match. With 5 minutes to go, the boys scored and converted a try to make the score 14-14. Unfortunately the boys gave away a penalty within their 20m which JT consequently converted to take the lead. Congratulations to all the boys on their epic performance as they make the college extremely proud of their efforts.
Rugby League U16 Girls
Coaches: Mrs Abra & Miss Heath
3rd Place Playoff VS MAG
Win: 40-24
Joint MVP Mia Aiono & Eric Saunders
Congratulations on a solid effort by the whole team today. Going into the game with limited players, our confidence was low however this did not last. The girls focused on their tackles, keeping their positions in the line and playing with no fear. A big thank you to our assistant coaches, Preston, Brody and Jerome who ran the girls through a great warmup and would always provide strategies for improvement. Maria put her body on the line time after time and displayed some amazing tackling techniques as did Mia and Erica who were our dual MVP’s of the match. Amelia scored two tries, much to her surprise and the rest of the team played their best game of the season. A big thank you to Mrs Taateo who was a great support and provided us with water bottles each week. Ms Heath and I are very proud of the team and would like to thank everyone for always being respectful, a pleasure to work with and being a great bunch of girls to coach.

Frisbee 7-9 Mixed
Coach: Mr Martin
Final VS MAG
Win: 8-7
MVP Hudson Warren
Fantastic result for the College and the team. I could not be more proud of the team’s performance today. In tough conditions it was by no means our prettiest performance but it was certainly our grittiest. Everyone left it all on the field. If you could spare me a moment to paint a picture. We went into half-time up 4-3, playing our absolute heart out. Early in the second half we went down 4-7 with a couple of great plays from Magdalene. We needed fresh legs so Rishabh and Jacob Latu came on and turned momentum around. We wrestled back to be up 8-7 with 7 minutes to go. Josh Manson and Smriti went on and defended for 7 nail biting minutes to hold the lead under a relentless assault from Magdalene. It was an absolutely incredible effort from the team. Congratulations. Season MVPs: Hudson Warren, and Chelsea Herborn.

Soccer 11-12 Boys
Coach: Mr Berkley
Final VS SBCC
Loss: 5-0
MVP Max Bakulic

After coming into the finals finishing at the top of the table, the boys were keen and eager to finish off the competition with a win. There was certainly a lot of excitement in the air and the boys were pumped to overcome the only team that MCCC lost to in competition. The game started off strong, and it was a tight contest with a lot of energy from both teams. After just a few minutes, however, SBCC broke the deadlock and snuck in a goal past Brayden after some lacklustre defending. The boys re-grouped and showed great determination and resilience by adapting to a more attacking formation; they created some good scoring opportunities but were unable to convert them into goals. Despite their best efforts, SBCC's defence remained strong and took advantage of our attacking style and managed to score a few more goals before the end of the half. Despite an encouraging half-time talk, SBCC held onto their lead until the final whistle. It was a disappointing end to an otherwise outstanding season for MCCC, but they can hold their heads high knowing they gave it their all. A special shout out to Max’s performance who displayed high levels of effort and work rate in both defence and attack.
