DIOCESAN EVENTS – TERM 3

Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.

DIOCESAN NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Wednesday 31 July Mount Carmel sent six netball teams down to Wollongong to compete in the annual Diocesan Netball Championships. MCCC has many talented netballers amongst various grades at the College so we were hoping for a successful day on the court.

Our Year 7-8 teams, coached by Ms Bowen had a phenomenal day. Both of the teams worked exceptionally well together despite not having played together prior to this carnival. Every girl on the court gave it their all, fought for every rebound, chased every loose ball and defended every pass.

The division 1 team went through the carnival only losing one game against a strong St Patrick’s College team - the final game of the day. Despite some calls not going the girls way and the game situation being challenging at times, the girls played to the whistle and kept going right up until the final hooter sounded. Unfortunately this loss left this team finishing 2nd overall, and despite many of the girls being disappointed, their frowns quickly turned to smiles when they realised what they had just achieved. Well done.

The division 2 team were also successful on the day winning 4 of their games and losing 4 of their games. Again the girls all worked together each and every game to get the win - always representing the College with great pride. This team finished 5th overall which is a credit to their work and determination throughout the day. Well done.

Our Years 9-10 teams were coached by Mrs Tyra. Again many of these girls had not played with each other before and this proved to be challenging when matched up with strong, physical opponents. The division 1 team won 3 games and lost 5. This resulted in them finishing 8th overall. The division 2 team won 2 of their games and lost 3 resulting in a 5th place overall standing. Congratulations to our girls for always putting in 100% and for never giving up throughout the day.

The Years 11-12 teams also had a great day with both our division 1 and 2 teams finishing 6th overall. The division 1 team had 3 wins and 5 losses. The division 2 team had 2 wins and 5 losses. Again a very strong, talented competition in the senior divisions that proved challenging, yet rewarding for our girls. Thank you to Ms Armour for coaching our senior teams.

Congratulations to all of the girls involved in the Diocesan Netball Carnival this year. Another event that has offered many students the opportunity to be physically active in a competitive environment.

Finally, carnivals like these simply don’t happen without the help and willingness of umpires, volunteers and other officials. Throughout the day MCCC had many students step up and assist the smooth running of the carnival by offering their umpiring skills. A massive thank you to Isabella Ashcroft (Yr 7), Cara Kmet, Jessica Barnes, Emma Searle, Courtney Hoban, Hailee Muerant (Yr 8), Hannah Martin and Rhianna Heaslip (Yr 11) for your assistance on the day and for being such great ambassadors of the college - well done! We also had two ex-students assist on the day with draws, warm ups, scoring and general organisation which was extremely helpful. Thank you to Alyssa Worland and Abby Smith for coming back to help out - it was great!

Looking forward to next year and good luck to the three CCC teams who will be competing in 2 weeks time at Penrith.
