Principal's Report

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
In the Gospel last weekend (Matthew 4: 1-11), we are told of the temptation of Christ whilst He spent 40 days in the wilderness reflecting and praying. During His time, the devil appeared to Him and promised riches and power in return for Jesus bowing down before him. We are told that Jesus resisted and eventually told the devil to leave. This story reminds us that temptation is a natural part of what we experience in our ordinary lives as humans. The fact that we are tempted is not the main focus, but the way that we react or behave as a result of that temptation becomes important. We each make decisions and sometimes we get those wrong and whilst there may be consequences for this, the question is how much we learn and grow prior to the next temptation. Lent is a time for us to reflect on our actions and to pray for strength and guidance from Jesus Christ.
Last Monday evening we held our Year 7 2021 Information session. With over 600 people in attendance, we were able to outline our College mission and expectations as well as highlight the many experiences and opportunities that are available to Mount Carmel students. When these evenings are held, it becomes apparent even to our leadership staff, the many great things that occur. I am grateful as always to the staff for their commitment and efforts but also to the many students who volunteered for the evening to show people around. Again, this is a reflection of the high esteem that members of our community hold for Mount Carmel. For those who were unable to make the evening and wish to apply for enrolment for Year 7 2021, application packs can be collected from the College office. The completed forms are due back at the end of this term.
Last Wednesday evening our Year 7 parents had the opportunity to attend the College for the first Year 7 Literacy evening. A number of our English staff explained their current programs in order to assist parents in knowing how to support their children. These presentations were warmly received and highlight the importance of working in partnership to provide students with the best opportunities. I thank Mrs Murphy and her staff in advance for their time, experience and effort in working closely with parents in this forum.
Also on Wednesday evening, a number of our students from last year’s HSC class were invited to a civic reception at Campbelltown Council to recognise their high achievement in the Higher School Certificate. This evening is the final recognition of their work and a fitting conclusion for their efforts from 2019. Thank you to the past students who attended along with our staff in support. Thanks also to Campbelltown Council and the Mayor, Cr George Brticevic for this community recognition.
On Friday we held our Staff Development Day where we focussed on the nature of feedback and the many forms that it takes within and outside the classroom. Staff reflection and professional development in this area is a result of our Strategic Improvement Plan for 2020 to continue to build a culture of learning within the students. This is something we have done well in the past and are looking to springboard into the future. The day provided for a worthwhile discussion and development of strategies.
A reminder that P&F meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month during term times at 7pm in room I3. All parents are warmly invited to these meetings. The next will be held on March 10 and will begin with the AGM.
