Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Last Sunday’s Gospel builds upon the previous week’s in a continuation of the Farewell Discourse that followed the Last Supper. In this reading, Christ promises us an Advocate in the form of the Holy Spirit, as the one who will defend us from evil and sin, and guide us towards Truth by helping us grasp the meaning of Christ’s words and actions. This promise also affirms the greatest mystery of our faith, the Trinitarian nature of God.
I take the opportunity this week to thank all the parents who joined us for our Semester One Year 11 Parent, Teacher, Student Interviews. The number of families that attended on the night is reflective of the value that we all place on such evenings and the importance of the home-school relationship in terms of the impact this has on the academic outcomes for each student. I urge every student to reflect and respond to the advice that was given on the night, particularly in instances where similar feedback was given from multiple teachers. Students in Years 7-10 will have an opportunity for their Semester One interviews in Week 10 of this term.
As this week’s newsletter is distributed, our annual College Athletics Carnival is drawing to a close after what has been a thoroughly enjoyable, community building day. While competitive at times, overwhelmingly, students have displayed great talent, sportsmanship and house spirit which they are to be congratulated for. It was also great to see so many parents join us to cheer on their son’s and daughter’s. In what promises to be a close finish, we will be announcing the champion house at an upcoming College assembly.
I would once again like to extend an invitation to all parents and friends of the College to join us this coming Friday, 7 June for our annual Champagnat Day Mass and Awards Ceremony which will be taking place in the Champagnat Centre. We would ask parents to arrive no later than 9:45am so that students can be seated in order to commence our celebration of the Eucharist by 10am. This will be followed immediately by the 2019 Champagnat Day Awards Ceremony, after which, visitors will be invited to join staff for a light morning tea outside the La Valla Centre.
Mr David Cloran
Acting Principal
Champagnat Week
We have been building up over the next past 5 weeks to our Champagnat Day celebrations.
The focus during this term in Pastoral classes has been around the Marist characteristics and how they are the foundations of our Marist thinking. These characteristics are presence, simplicity, in the way of Mary, love of work, and family spirit.
This will culminate on Champagnat Day when we celebrate the Eucharist, recognise students and staff who have made a great contribution to our College and acted in the spirit and footsteps of St Marcelin Champagnat. He is certainly a role model and his whole focus was to ‘make Christ known and loved’.
Then we look to helping others, through our fundraising fair, where we try to reflect on the Marist Solidarity theme of "walking in their shoes".
We all look forward to this celebration next Friday.
Mrs C Meharg
Religious Education Coordinator
A reminder to all parents of Year 10 students that NSW Health will be providing vaccinations this coming Monday 3 June. Forms for these were given out during the week and will be required to be returned on Monday. Students will keep possession of these forms and hand it to the appropriate nurse at the time of their injection. For ease of administration, students in Year 10 are being asked to wear their sports uniform on Monday.
Consent Form - Use of Student Images / Work
As previously requested, we ask all Parents/Guardians to complete and return the Consent Form for use of Student Images/Work. This can now be downloaded from the Forms and Documents attachments on the lefthand side of the Newsletter. This is a requirement from the Catholic Education Office and I thank those families who have already returned the relevant form.
Due to the Mother's Day afternoon tea on Monday 3 June, the Second Hand Uniform Shop will not open until 3.15pm.
Due to the amazing support of the Mount Carmel community with our Lids for Limbs initiative, we are now becoming a permanent collection point for Envision Hands, so please keep collecting and spreading the word. The number of lids being brought in by students, parents and teachers is phenomenal and greatly appreciated.
Please also try and find the time to watch this short clip as it shows what we are achieving as well as protecting the environment by keeping the lids out of landfill. Thank you all again for your ongoing support.
College Sport at Mount Carmel
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their Compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply a note to the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.

Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.

NSWCCC Rugby League Trials
On Friday and Saturday of last week Jabriel Kalache (Year 11) and Feiloaki Feiloakitohi (Year 12) played as members of the Southern Country Rugby League team at the annual CCC Rugby League trials held at St Mary’s. Both of the boys played in the Under 18’s division.
They had 2 physical games on the Friday, particularly the game against a strong MCS team. The won their first match 26-0 and lost their match against MCS in the final 4 minutes of game time. They then played another physically challenging game on Saturday morning against MCC unfortunately losing.
Congratulations to both of the boys for their efforts in a challenging trial environment. It certainly isn’t easy joining a team of other rugby league players who you have never met before and being expected to mesh on and off the field. Well done. Thank you to Mr Huntly for being the assistant coach for the Under 18’s team. Your guidance of our students would have been great as always and the boys would've got some comfort and confidence seeing a familiar face on the sideline.
NOMINATIONS – APPLICATION PROCESS (To self-nominate and get approved for these events, students need to be competing at a representative level in their chosen sport).
Please refer to the information sheet provided by the sport coordinator for the process for individual student nominations for trialsfor NSWCCC events. All trial closing dates will be advertised in the newsletter and in the student weekly sport update emails. Students can register for events at any time.
Any student who require assistance nominating for the following sports please see Mrs Pontin ASAP.
