Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
“For a man’s words flow out of what fills his heart” Luke 6:45
This Wednesday we begin the journey toward Easter. This period starts with our reflection on our own mortality at Ash Wednesday where we hear one of the phrases: “Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel” or “remember that you are dust and unto dust you shall return”. We are not reminded of this mortality however as a warning or in a negative way, but as an opportunity to grow and improve ourselves. The turning away from sin is something that we can do immediately and we can replace these thoughts and actions with positive gospel values such as hope, peace, love and service. The gospel constantly reminds us of these things and challenges us to live better lives. Luke’s quote above from this Sunday’s gospel reminds us that truly moving toward God is not just about saying the right words or simply attending ceremonies. It is about holding what we believe within our hearts and ensuring that our actions and behaviours come from the heart. The belief in the gospel is the faith component and the turning away from sin is the behavioural component. Luke was asking us to ensure that these two matched and that what we say and what we do are the same thing.
Year 7, 2023 Information evening next Monday
This Monday evening, we will be hosting our Year 7, 2023 Information evening. This year it will be slightly different to the past to enable us to ensure health concerns are considered and reduce crowding where possible. The evening will run from 6 – 8 pm and visitors will be able to view subject displays in various locations around the College. Enrolment packages will be available for collection at any stage during this time and will be distributed from the area outside the LaValla Centre. At 7 pm, there will be a short 30-minute presentation by members of the College Leadership Team outlining some of the mission and structures of the College and can be attended by anyone who wishes to hear this. This is a valuable opportunity for both prospective students and parents to hear about, and see, the College. Whilst all parents and students who are considering Mount Carmel for enrolment next year are welcome, it is not essential for siblings of current students to attend the evening. Enrolment packages for current families can be collected from the College office at any point from Monday. These will be available to parents who wish to collect them and will also be given to current students to take home upon request. We will ask for the name and school of the enrolling student so we can reduce multiple packages being given for the same student. Completed enrolment packages should be returned by 2pm on Friday April 8 (the last day of Term 1).
Next Friday we will hold the second of our half-college Opening Year Masses. This mass will involve Year 7, 10 and 12 and will be followed by the badging of our Year 12 students, SRC and Year 10 leaders. The Opening Mass is an important way for the College community to come together and to celebrate as one. The decision to include Year 7 in this mass rather than last week was to join our oldest and youngest group at the one time to highlight the nature of one community even though we could not join fully as a college. We are honoured to have Mr Peter Hill, the Director of Education, Diocese of Wollongong, at this event and sharing in our liturgical celebration. We hope to have a few photos of this in next week’s newsletter.
Please be advised that the P&F AGM will now be held on Tuesday March 8 (week 6). This meeting will thank the outgoing P&F executive and elect the executive for 2022 and will then be followed by the first general meeting for 2022. I encourage parents to attend this meeting and to become involved in the Parents and Friends Association. The meeting will be onsite and begin at 7pm in Room I3 (the front of the College at the top of the turning circle).

Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal
You may be aware that Interline buses have recently confirmed a new bus service that will commence this coming Monday 28 February. The morning service (3040) will depart the western side of Campbelltown train station at 7:50am each morning and make its way directly to the College. The afternoon service (4039) will depart the College at 3:40pm and make its way directly to the western side of Campbelltown train station.
At the beginning of each year, we typically notice an increase in students who are dropped off and picked up by private vehicles which leads to an increase in congestion in the parent car park (immediately to the left as you enter the College gates). Particularly during this Covid climate, parents are asked to pull into designated parking spots at drop off and pick up and to remain in your vehicle at all times. As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, Spitfire Drive is relatively clear by 3:30pm each afternoon so you may wish to slightly delay your pick up time as supervision is still provided until the final buses leave each day.
In line with recent announcements from the NSW Government, the rapid antigen test (RAT) program will end today (Friday 25 February 2022). This means that the twice weekly testing using RAT kits is no longer in place. Thank you for your patience and cooperation over the last four weeks. While it has been a—sometimes unwelcome—addition to the already busy morning routine, proactive testing was a critical tool to keep our school community safe, especially while case numbers remained high in the broader community.
For the remainder of Term 1, families are asked to use RATs at your discretion when you consider it necessary (e.g. if a child develops symptoms or a family member is unwell). In the coming weeks, each student will be provided with a further eight RATs to be used for this purpose. We are currently awaiting the delivery of the additional RATs from the NSW Government and we will advise you of collection details as soon as we receive the delivery.
Finally, as has been stated previously, I request that families inform the College immediately should any student test positive to COVID-19 and again stress that should this occur, the student must isolate for a minimum of 7 days, along with any sibling from the same household. Finally, I would also ask that students who are displaying any type of flu-like symptoms stay at home until such symptoms have ceased.
Kind regards,
David Cloran

Mass Reading
27 February - EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME C
First Reading Sir 27:4-7 Speech shows state of mind.
Second Reading 1 Cor 15:54-58 Death has no victory.
Gospel Lk 6:39-45 Take the plank from your eye.
As a Catholic school and community, each of us, our families, and friends are invited to walk in a prayerful Lenten rhythm.
The natural cadence of our day includes school uniforms and lunches, school drops, work, shopping, and adjusted schedules; however, we also need to build moments of pause, moments of prayer, moments to notice the breathing in and breathing out of God’s spirit.
So this Lent, what are you, your families, and your community leaving out of your day (giving up) so as to create space for prayer and reflection (picking up) in your life?
A thought from the POPE: Lent – a time of renewal
“Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all it is a “time of grace” (2 Cor 6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us. “We love because he first has loved us” (1 Jn 4:19).”

HSC MINIMUM STANDARDS
On Thursday Year 10, will make their first attempt at the HSC Minimum Standards Tests. These tests are an opportunity for students to demonstrate their level of competency in writing, reading and numeracy. To show they meet the HSC minimum standard, students need to achieve Level 3 or 4 in short online reading, writing and numeracy tests of skills for everyday life. Many students will meet this level on their first attempt, however if not, they will have multiple opportunities throughout Yr 10, 11 and 12 to meet the minimum standard.
In preparation for these tests, students have been asked to download a lockdown browser and will need a well charged laptop to complete the tests over Period 1-3 on Thursday 3 March.
Students in Year 11 and 12 who are yet to meet the standards, will have opportunities later in the term to attempt the tests.
PAT TESTS - Year 8-10
Earlier this term Year 7 completed their PAT (Progressive Assessment Tests) assessments in Reading, Maths and Science. Over the coming weeks students in Year 8-10 will also complete these tests. The intention and purpose of these tests is to collect a snapshot of students' knowledge and skills at the beginning of a school year, so that teachers can identify targeted areas of intervention and strategies required to best support students' learning needs. At the end of the year, students will complete a second test which will show learning growth over the year.
Overview of each assessment:
PAT Maths Adaptive assesses a range of content areas and proficiencies to ensure that the breadth of students’ mathematical abilities are captured. The assessments are designed to be engaging and to encourage students to interact with the content to the best of their ability. Reading load is minimised and item types are limited to avoid unnecessarily complicating the skill being assessed. Where the skill is better captured in a different format, interactive items are utilised as appropriate.
PAT Reading Adaptive assesses a range of text types and skill areas to ensure that the breadth of students’ reading comprehension abilities are being captured. The assessment is designed to be engaging and to encourage students to interact with the content to the best of their ability. Item type complexity is minimised to avoid unnecessarily complicating the skill being assessed, except in those instances where the skill is better captured in a different format. Interactive items are utilised as appropriate in these cases.
PAT Science provides information to teachers about the level of achievement attained by their students in the concepts, skills and processes of science. PAT Science assesses knowledge and concepts across four broad areas: physical systems (ie Energy and Change), chemical systems (ie Materials), geological and space systems (ie Earth and Space) and living systems (ie Life and Living).
In preparation for these assessments, students will need to ensure that they have a well charged laptop and headphones. A calculator and pencil may also be required.

From the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Good afternoon everyone,
Walking in Truth
Over the past 12 months or so reference has been made to the launch of “Walking in Truth”, our whole school approach to providing a Safe, Responsible and Respectful environment for our community. Last year the Walking in Truth team presented the initiative at a range of College and Year Group Assemblies as we introduced the concept to our external areas with an emphasis on expected positive behaviours at various locations across our site. This week we extended the program to our classrooms and the language of Positive Behaviour for Learning is now something that is well ensconced in our day to day language. It is anticipated that through the publication and continued reference to these guidelines that we will continue to maintain and improve the safety and wellbeing of all members of our College. Below is an example of some signage that is located around our campus which provides a visual reminder to staff and students with respect to expected behaviours.
Thanks to all members of the respective Pastoral teams for the rollout of the classroom “Walking in Truth” presentations.
Upcoming Pastoral Activities
Year 8 Connections “Who we are”: Mon March 7 Lessons 1 & 2
Year 9 Black Dog Future Proofing: Thursday March 3 Lesson 1

Mr Simon Huntly
Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Reading for pleasure still matters. Research indicates that reading for pleasure has the following advantages: it supports literacy and learning in school; it enables young people to develop their own, informed perspective on life; it is a safe and inexpensive way to spend time; it allows young people to understand and empathise with those in different situations, times and cultures; and it improves outcomes within and across the personal, educational, social and cultural dimensions of young people’s lives.
Unfortunately, reading for pleasure tends to decline as students move through adolescence. The challenge for teachers is to redress this trend through specific attention to ways in which reading and specifically reading for pleasure can occupy a more prominent and valid place in the curriculum. The needs, interests, and capacities of our students need to be prioritised here.
Many years ago, I taught a particular Year 8 student who found school to be an alienating place and reading to be extremely unappealing. In one of my playground chats with Paul – usually very one-sided encounters – I asked if he had any hobbies. After a long silence, and with absolutely no eye contact or expression, he answered, ‘Ferrets.’ This response certainly caught me by surprise. With this information, I searched far and wide for reading material on this rather unusual animal. Did you know that ferrets need several hours of supervised exercise and play outside of their cage each day and can be quite mischievous and destructive? I was on a steep learning curve in my pursuit of facts about ferrets. Texts were located and Paul was ‘hooked’. He talked about ferrets, wrote about ferrets and read as much as he could find about ferrets. This ferret focus eventually branched off into a reading of books about animals in general. Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows – a story with rats, moles, toads, badgers, and weasels – was a winner, as were All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot, Watership Down by Richard Adams, and Jack London’s The Call of the Wild.
Paul’s situation highlights the fact that students who struggle with reading are far more likely to progress in situations where teachers build on the constructive interests and strategies they do possess – and which they are shown they possess – rather than in ‘remedial’ situations which emphasise their inadequacies and draw their attention to them. Most reluctant readers find how possible it is to enjoy reading and to learn new reading strategies when they start to believe in their own abilities and concentrate on meaning and topics of interest to them.

CEO have had reports of families not receiving school fee statements when they have a Hotmail address.
Extensive testing has provided the answer that there isn’t a problem with transition and that the statements are more than likely going to parents’ ‘junk’ folder due to settings in Hotmail.
If you haven't already received your school fees statement , please check the ‘junk’ folder.
Please note that the P & F AGM Meeting is on Tuesday, 8 March
at 7pm in I3.

Diocesan Sport
Diocesan Touch Football
Unfortunately, both our boys and girls Touch football days scheduled for this week were postponed. The weather in Wollongong has caused closures of many sporting fields, including Dalton Park where the Championships were meant to be held. A call has already been made on the boys backup day with this event being cancelled. A call on the girls day will be made early next week. Please keep an eye out on your emails for further updates on this. A Diocesan team will still be selected based on a paper nomination.

A meeting will be held in F1 on Monday 28th February for information on this event. This event is via nomination only and a paper trial will take place before successful nominations are invited to attend the trial. There are two age groups for 15s boys and Opens boys. Please attend the meeting on Monday, or if you are unable to make it, express your interest to Mrs Jones at jonesb13@dow.catholic.edu.au
*Please note that a new event for girls Rugby League will be held later in the year and will be communicated with students on compass and in the newsletter. This meeting is for the boys event only.
Communication regarding sport
Students are reminded to continue checking the Compass dashboard for key information relating to sport during 2022. Key information will also be communicated to parents via the College Newsletter and notes sent home. Information will also be provided to staff who will communicate key messages with students during Pastoral Care in the morning.
Sporting Success
Congratulations to Daniel Lill (Year 9) who has gained a scholarship with South West Sydney Academy of Sport as a future star of Para-Swimming. Daniel continues to shine in the pool and we can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes you.
Paula Zaballero (Year 12), has been consistent on the diamond for a number of years, recognised with her most recent selection in the NSW U18’s Women’s Softball Team. She will be competing in April at Blacktown International Sportspark. Paula has a heavy commitment to softball training and playing most nights of the week at an elite level. We wish Paula all the best at the upcoming National Championships and in her discussions with USA College coaches about furthering her career and study in the States from 2023 and beyond. |
If your child or someone as part of our school community (past or present) experiences any sporting success. We would love to know about it. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any Sporting Success so we can recognise those achievements of our community.
Staff Focus
Just as we love to celebrate student success both in and out of school, it is also important to recognise those staff members who go above and beyond what is expected of them as educators. This week we would like to thank Mr Daniels, who has given up his Wednesday and Thursday mornings to help train some of our senior students in their preparations for the NSWCCC Volleyball trials to be held on 9 March 2022. The NSWCCC level is the highest level of Catholic Sporting success before moving on to All Schools level. We wish our students all the success at these trials and hope to hear of some selections in this team.
