Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
“I have made you a light for the nations” Acts 13:47
As I read the above quote from this Sunday’s first reading, I was conscious of contemplating the meaning of a number of the key words. The “I” in this quote is quite particularly referring to God, who has the power over us and constantly gives us the strength to do good for those around us and within a troubled world. The “you” in this quote obviously refers to each one of us who may be reading or listening to the word of God. Each one of us is capable of this good and sharing it as a gift from God is the way that we honour Him and ourselves. The notion of “light” constantly repeats in the various gospels and readings that we hear at mass on Sundays. Light by its nature is at its most effective when it can be seen by others and is able to illuminate the darkness around it. In thinking about all of this together this one small quote from the first reading of the Acts of the Apostles, quite clearly reflects the fact that with the help of a loving God, each one of us is able to spread goodness and illuminate the darkness around us.
As always the gospels and readings from Mass seem to make a significant connection to the context of what is happening around us in the world. This particular quote links beautifully back to the secular celebration from this weekend where we acknowledge and give thanks for the mothers in our lives. This Sunday being Mother's Day, provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how that special person in our life helps to illuminate the darkness that may be around us. As God is present in all of us may we reflect this weekend on our own mothers and how they are a special gift from God to help us to see where we are going and what goodness lies ahead. I wish all mothers a very happy day this weekend, and pray for blessings on mothers - both those who are with us and those who may have already gone to eternal life.
Over the last three days our year 12 students have been experiencing their senior retreat. This was a retreat which was meant to occur at the start of term four last year, however, was not able to continue due to concerns around COVID. Our students went to three separate sites and were accompanied by a large number of staff who travelled the journey of retreat with them. Retreats are an opportunity for us to withdraw from our daily lives and to spend some time in spiritual reflection looking at our purpose and the way that God accompanies us. By all reports our senior students experienced some meaningful and valuable time and it allowed them to reflect on their own journey with, and toward, God. I thank all staff who gave of their own time to be with the students, and particularly for parents who have supported your children in this journey not only over the past few weeks, but also over the many years of your child's life.
On Tuesday May 24, Week 5, we will be holding our next Parents and Friends’ meeting at the College. This will be our normal mid-term meeting, and once again I invite all parents to join us. Following the Annual General Meeting in term 1, there will be an opportunity to nominate for president or P&F treasurer for 2022. The P&F is an extremely valuable consultative and supportive body essential to the effective running of a school. I encourage all parents to attend on this evening and look forward to you joining us.
In the next few weeks, we will be inviting parents, students and staff to participate in our Tell Them From ME survey. This is an opportunity to give the College some feedback on what we do and how well we do it. It forms an important part of our self-evaluation loop and will assist us in developing our School Improvement Plans for the next four years. I ask you to be aware when this opens and encourage all members of our community to provide us with your thoughts.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal
As we welcome our Year 12 students back from their much anticipated Senior Retreat today, we needn’t look too far ahead to be reminded any further of the fact that we are continuing our return to normality following a long period of interruptions and cancelled events as a result of the pandemic. Of particular significance, I draw your attention to a range of major events that we have coming up in the weeks ahead:

Such significant events make for a busy term, however they each play a role in the ongoing development of our students. Further information about these key events will be distributed closer to each date, including any relevant updates should the COVID situation change throughout the course of the term.
Earlier today, all students were issued with an additional box of Rapid Antigen Tests to use should they be experiencing any symptoms. As you may also recall from previous communications, these tests may also be used if students are a household contact of a positive case where they are required to test before coming to school each day. This is in addition to the following COVID-safe guidelines for Term 2 which stipulate that household close contacts who have no symptoms may continue to attend school in line with the following requirements:
- The school is notified that they are intending to return under this provision
- Secondary students who are close contacts must wear a mask indoors except when eating or exercising
- Once staff or secondary students have completed their 7-day isolation period, they should wear a mask for an additional 3 days (for days 8 to 10)
Please note that students who test positive for COVID-19, or who are unwell or showing COVID-19 symptoms, must continue to isolate at home.
All the best for the week ahead,
Mr David Cloran
Assistant Principal
A Prayer in Gratitude for Our Mothers
Good and Gentle God,
we pray in gratitude for our mothers and for all the women of theory who have joined with you in the wonder of bringing forth new life. You who became human through a woman, grant to all mothers the courage they need to face the uncertain future that life with children always brings.
Give them the strength to live and to be loved in return, not perfectly, but humanly.
Give them the faithful support of husbands, family, and friends as they care for the physical and spiritual growth of their children.
Give them joy and delight in their children to sustain them through the trials of motherhood. Most of all, give them the wisdom to turn to you for help when they need it most.
Amen
Maker of the seasons who circles the seasons with ease, teaches me about the earth’s natural cycle of turning from one season to another. Remind me often of how she opens herself to the dying and rising rotations, the coming and the going of each of the four seasons. Open me to the teachings of the season of Autumn. May my heart grow freer and my life more peaceful as I resonate with, and respond to, the many teachings this season offers me.

The contemporary American writer, Paul Auster, speaks passionately about the connection between reading and writing. ‘I can’t imagine anyone becoming a writer who wasn’t a voracious reader as an adolescent. A true reader understands that books are a world unto themselves – and that the world is richer and more interesting than any one we’ve travelled in before. I think that turns young men and women into writers – the happiness you discover living in books.’ Stephen King, another contemporary American writer, supports Auster’s view on the rich interplay between reading and writing when he says, ‘If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.’
Mount Carmel has been committed to developing a community of writers for some time now. In 2016, the English faculty established a writing club which soon grew to include teachers from all subject areas as well as some of our ancillary staff. Every first Thursday of the month, after school, we would drive up to the Carmelite Retreat Centre on St Andrews Rd, and sit and write for one, sometimes two, or on a couple of occasions, three hours. Our writing was often guided by a stimulus from a piece of literature, a particular painting, or a prayer. At other times we would sit quietly in that beautiful space overlooking the rural landscape, and simply journal.
When COVID-19 and lockdown curtailed our writing sessions at the Retreat Centre, we improvised with sessions at home. At a particular time of day, many of our staff would respond to a prompt and sit and write. This concept of a professional learning community working collectively for a specific goal, was wonderfully fruitful. Throughout the remote learning period, many English classes set up writing clubs of their own. Their mantra was to ‘keep the appointment’. This commitment to writing – and writing often – gave birth to yet another mantra which still reverberates today: ‘I am a writer!’ So, when Paul Auster and Stephen King speak about writers needing to be enthusiastic readers, that includes all of us at Mount Carmel.

From the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Good afternoon everyone,
Week Two has again been a productive one with respect to Pastoral Care and Wellbeing. Year 12 have spent the past three days attending their annual Retreat at Tallong and Katoomba, which was postponed from early Term Four last year due to lockdown restrictions. Many thanks to all staff who assisted with organisation, delivery of sessions and supervision, as well as to Year 12 for their enthusiasm and participation throughout the duration of the Retreat.
In the absence of many staff, pastoral care sessions went ahead for the remaining groups this morning as usual. An overview of activities is located below:
- Year Seven - Smart Goals activities in pastoral classes
- Year Eight - Making Jesus Real activities in pastoral classes
- Year Nine - Year Assembly which included Dolly’s Dream Cyberbullying presentation, uniform reminders, an overview of upcoming events and NAPLAN requirements
- Year Ten - Private study and assessment task preparation
- Year Eleven - Year Assembly which included a Mother’s Day prayer, High Intensity Student Study Skills modules 5 & 6, upcoming Year 12 Leadership overview and commencement of Year 12 Jersey planning.
Again, thanks to all staff and students for their preparation and assistance with these activities earlier today.
