Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
A very warm welcome back to both a new school term and the commencement of Semester Two here at Mount Carmel Catholic College. I write to you at the conclusion of a very busy week here at the College, which culminated this morning in the celebration of our annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Mass. Once again, this was a great opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate our Carmelite foundations which permeate so many facets of College life here at Mount Carmel. At the outset this week, I take the opportunity to thank Father Shane for his tireless support of the liturgical life of the College, and extend this thanks to members of our community who were able to join us this morning in our celebration of the Eucharist.
At the conclusion of this morning’s celebration it was my pleasure to announce the recipients of the 2019 Mount Carmel Awards. These awards are presented to staff members at the College who have reached particular milestones in terms of their service to the College community. I take the opportunity once again to congratulate Mrs Rayghaan Kasmani who was acknowledged for 10 years of service, and to Mrs Therona Govender who was acknowledged for an extraordinary 20 years of service to Mount Carmel Catholic College. The final award for this year was the Mount Carmel Parent Award and it was my pleasure to present this to Mrs Helen Atkins for her ongoing service in so many capacities for the students, staff and community of Mount Carmel, particularly via her coordination of the secondhand uniform shop and the P&F committee.
With the new school term now officially underway, I would once again encourage all students to take a moment to consider their academic performance over the first half of 2019. By all means, be very proud of your successes, but also consider ways whereby you may be able to renew your focus for Semester Two so that the progress you achieve aligns itself with your academic potential.
The term ahead will see our Year 7 cohort continue their, what has been to this point, successful transition into secondary education. Years 8 and 9 will undertake a subject selection process that will determine the study of two elective subjects in 2020. Year 10 students will conclude their subject selection process which will determine their entire pattern of study for the 2021 HSC. Year 11 will conclude their Preliminary Course which culminates in their Preliminary Examinations in Week 9, while in just over a week, our graduating class of 2019 will commence their Trial HSC Examinations before concluding their course work and HSC preparations towards the end of this term. By any measure, it is certainly a busy term ahead for all students here at the College.
As most of you would be aware, our College Principal Mr Steve Lo Cascio will be continuing his recovery across the first few weeks of Term 3 with a view to rejoining our community in the near future. I would ask you to keep Mr Lo Cascio in your prayers at this time, along with all the other members of our school community who are unwell.
Wishing you all the very best as the new term and semester gets underway.
David Cloran
Acting Principal

In the recent holidays, 32 students from SOR 1 and 2 Unit classes attended a Study session in preparation for the upcoming Trial Examinations. The focus of the presentation was the Post 45 section of the Syllabus.
Thanks Mr Pletikosa for a highly engaging presentation, supported by Ms Governatore and Mrs Meharg.
University of New South Wales - Exploring STEM Careers
There are so many opportunities to obtain through multiple University programs to gain an understanding of our future beyond the classroom walls. It is quite fascinating with how many things you can be encapsulated in when you attend these type of events as what they show and inform students about is something you will usually not get at a normal school day. So, on 8 July 2019, I partook in a program at the University of New South Wales. This program was designed for young Year 10 girls to explore the variety of STEM careers and help to influence their decision in what we want to become in the near future.
Without a doubt, the day was filled with inevitable excitement for what was going to come. Aspiring scientists and engineers waited patiently in the lobby for the events that were all intricately planned out. Despite the fact we’ve received the program information including what we were going to do, we were still put into a spot of astonishment because everything turned out better than what we actually expected. Kicking the day off, a presentation was held for us and afterwards, we were split into our own groups where we introduced ourselves and spoke out what we want to possibly be in the future. Within minutes, our organiser instructed us to go into the bus where we departed from the University and went straight to Cochlear. Going into Cochlear’s building was quite an experience. We were able to explore Biomedical Innovation of what Cochlear has invented and actually see each detail behind the creation of a hearing aid which they produce. It makes you realise that there are actually so many people who work hand in hand to create a product that helps hundreds of people in the world to be able to hear sounds. It was captivating to witness what they were able to do and how it has a profound impact on society. The next location we headed to was Holsworthy Barracks. To be specific, this was the place for the Department of Defence and is currently situated in 49,000 acres of land. In here, we met dozens of people who worked in the army and informed us about how their own engineering and scientific skills they were able to develop during their time in University was able to be applied in a motivational and exhilarating environment. We were also able to have a personal close up look of actual helicopters which they use for training and emergency purposes. The day concluded with afternoon tea and a closing presentation where we said our goodbyes to our fellow team leader and the wonderful people we had met along the day.
This is of course one of many University STEM events that I have attended so I urge you all to take up every opportunity similar to this as it provides you a headstart for the future.
Maria Tuyor, Year 10
Welcome back to Term 3! I hope you have all had a rejuvenating break and you are ready to ‘hit the ground running’ in the sporting realm at the College. There are many exciting sporting opportunities to look forward to this term and as always we encourage all students to fully immerse themselves in the opportunities that are offered to them at the College and to always put in their Personal Best - because as we know “MC Teamwork Makes the PB Dream Work”.
College Sport at Mount Carmel
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on Compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for Week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
