Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
In just under two weeks’ time, we will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Jesus. Within our celebration, there are four different sets of readings depending on what time of day we attend Mass. One of the gospels is taken from Matthew, two from Luke and the last from John. Matthew goes into great detail on the ancestry of Jesus much in the same way that we might record our own family tree. Luke relays the traditional nativity story that we know where Jesus is born in a manger and visited by shepherds and angels (the wise men will arrive at the Epiphany in early January). The fourth gospel speaks of the coming of God in a far deeper theological way – “In the beginning was the word”. Each of these four gospels combined gives us a picture of the entry of Jesus into the world. His arrival was not simply pure white snow and a warm barn, but nor was it the entry into the world of a person with no background. Nor was it something complicated and academic that requires deep study to understand. It was all of these combined, yet none of them individually. Jesus arrived for all people in all ways to try to bring light to the world. This was true 2000 years ago, is true now and will remain true into the future. Our celebration of Christmas needs to be focussed on this same arrival of light and goodness and we should try to continue that throughout the year.
Yesterday I sent a letter outlining the very good results of our students (and staff) in this year’s HSC. We also hosted a morning tea for the Class of 2023 so that they could come in and share their excitement and their celebration. There was certainly a ‘buzz’ and level of excitement and happiness in the room where the students gathered, and many told me of their gratitude for the work that the teachers had contributed during their studies. Without going again into fine detail, we are very proud of all the students and particularly celebrate with the 31 students who received 60 band 6 results. We also recognise the teachers who assisted students to attain a band 5 or 6 (96% of subjects) and specifically to our English Extension and Visual Arts classes who achieved 100% and 50% respectively of students in the top band. A special congratulations to our Dux in 2023, Emma Searle who achieved an impressive ATAR of 99.05. Well done to all our students and please know that we are proud of you.
This morning, we gathered to recognise our students who have achieved something special in relation to their academics or community contributions. These young women and men have made a conscious decision to work hard and make a difference in what they do. At the start of this year, I encouraged our community to develop a growth mindset and the students recognised today have certainly found a way to ensure that they have achieved this. Congratulations to each of these and also to those who have grown in their effort or achievements and may not have been specifically recognised. These are again an indication of our success in creating a Christ-centred community that provides opportunities for excellence.
Today we farewelled a number of our staff who will be leaving us to take up other roles next year. To: Ms Chiara Bartolillo, Ms Anne Clarke, Ms Jyasmin Frascella, Ms Tara Hibberd, Ms Josephine Jefferys, Ms. Kerry Keith, Ms Alison Kripal, Mr Sean McGorry, Mr Greg Mackney, Ms Kristina Owen Guarirapa, Mr Andrew Rees, Ms Michelle Woolley and Ms Sam Walker - Thank you. We will also say farewell to three staff who leave (or have very recently left) on parental leave: Ms Davina Balaghee, Ms Jemma Rodoreda and Ms Laura Penfold and wish them a gentle break until they return. Some of these staff have already been on leave during this year or were on temporary appointments. In all cases, they have made a positive contribution to the College and I thank them on behalf of our whole community. Mount Carmel is a better place for your involvement and passion and we wish you all the best in your life’s journey.
At the start of next year, I will name and welcome our new staff who join us on the journey at Mount Carmel.
As this is the last newsletter for the year, I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support and contributions to Mount Carmel during 2023. On behalf of our staff, I wish you all a safe, happy and holy Christmas break and look forward to working with you in 2024.
Earlier today we concluded our year with a number of awards presentations to students from Years 7 to 10. In all, a total of 281 individual awards, the Clarrie Jenkins Sustainability Cup and the L’Hermitage House Cup were presented. Congratulations to all Award recipients and to MacKillop House who won the Sustainability Award, as well as the overall House Cup for the first time. As was the case last week, where student sporting achievement was recognised, today was our final opportunity to celebrate the outstanding academic and cultural achievements of our students. Thanks to all staff involved in the preparation and presentation of these awards and to all students who received awards.
The assembly also provided a chance for our community to recognise some significant staff milestones, with a number of staff presented with certificates for years of service to Catholic education. Congratulations to each of our staff who were recognised.

Year 7- 10 Semester 2 Academic Reports
Today all students in Years 7 - 10 will have electronic access to their Semester 2 Academic Report via Compass. This report is a record of the progress students have made in each course throughout the last two terms of 2023.
For each subject there is a course grade, which is an overall judgement on the progress of the student in that subject. The common grade scale located on the first page of the report provides some basic information on what each grade represents. This grade scale can also be applied to each of the outcomes listed for each subject.
Subject outcomes are a summary of the specific knowledge, skills and attitudes (what a student can do) devised or endorsed by NESA for each subject. The level achieved for each outcome area reflects a particular teacher’s assessment of the student’s level of development in that outcome area at the time of the report. It is a measure of all the work completed in class and through formal assessment tasks that contribute to achieving that outcome grade.
The learning profile section outlines how well a student has applied themselves to their studies and should provide an indication of their commitment to learning during the second semester. Each teacher has also provided a comment that highlights what your child is doing well and identifies a targeted area for growth and improvement.
This Semester 2 report should provide feedback and allow students to reflect on their learning and explore ways of improving in 2024.
Year 7-11 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
Bookings close on Friday 15 December
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews provide an opportunity for parents and students to meet with their class teachers to review academic progress and discuss areas for growth. This conversation provides valuable feedback and enables the opportunity to ask questions to support students as they progress through their secondary education.
Interviews for Years 7-11 2023 are being held on Monday December 18 between 9:00am and 12:30pm via Zoom. Interview sessions can be booked online through the Compass Parent Portal. In some cases, teachers may be unavailable for these Parent/Teacher/Student interviews and in these circumstances, the respective teachers may make contact with you regarding how you can obtain additional feedback about your child’s academic progress.
If you have any questions regarding the upcoming interviews, please do not hesitate to contact the College via an email to info@mcccdow.catholic.edu.au or a phone call to (02) 9603 3000.

Acting Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
Today marked the culmination of a vibrant and eventful year as we came together to celebrate various achievements and milestones. The festivities included Year Group Awards, a College end-of-year Mass, Academic and Cultural Awards for Years 7 to 10, and captivating musical performances. The last day of school served as the grand finale to what has been an incredibly busy and fulfilling year.
Earlier in the week, Year 10 actively participated in a series of activities during their "Transition Week." These activities encompassed preparations for Stage 6 learning, engaging individual and group challenge activities at Stanwell Tops, Elevate Education Careers Pathway presentations, a Liturgy, team-building activities, and active involvement in today's comprehensive program. A heartfelt thank you goes to the dedicated efforts of Ms Armour, Mr Teuma, Ms Miller, Mr Daniels, Mr Lozelle, the Year 10 Pastoral team, and all staff members who played pivotal roles in organising and presenting these initiatives throughout the week. Additionally, gratitude is extended to the Year 10 students for their enthusiastic and cooperative engagement in the program.
Mental Health Resources
As we say farewell to the academic year of 2023, as has been the pattern over the past couple of years, some members of our community find some aspects of life to be a challenge. When on site, there are a range of support structures that students have access to - friends, teachers, Year Coordinators and Catholic Care Counselling Staff. The Catholic Education Office of Wollongong with Catholic Care, and Headspace, have provided valuable resources should students, families or someone they know require some support over the break.

Uniform and Grooming 2024
Upon our return to school in 2024 we would expect all students to be wearing the full correct uniform for both summer and winter, as well as meeting standards regarding grooming (hair, jewellery, make-up etc). This information will be reiterated a number of times between now and the return to classes next year. Please refer to the image below regarding these expectations. Year Coordinators have also sent this information out to parents via Compass with their letter and also the equipment/ resource lists for 2024.
Finally, on behalf of the Pastoral and Wellbeing team (our Year Coordinators, Assistant Year Coordinators and Pastoral Advisors), thanks you to all families and students for your cooperation and support throughout what has been an exciting year. May each and every member of our community have a happy, safe and Holy Christmas.

What a year it has been! With the biggest year of sport in recent memory the College hosted the Annual Sports Assembly on Friday the 8 December which recognised our best and brightest athletes in the College. A big thank you goes out to everyone for their support throughout the year including staff, students and parents. With so many of our athletes achieving amazing things a great way to finish off the year is to recognise them one last time. Keep an eye on compass in the new year for any updates on the sport that is heating up as we chase more success in 2024. Have a blessed and restful Christmas break.
