Despite the past week being shortened due to the King’s Birthday long weekend, there were still a significant number of events and activities that took place to complement the daily faith, learning and wellbeing that occurs each and every day within the classroom. Below is an overview of the past week’s additional efforts to support the holistic education of our students.
- Year 11 PDHPE Excursion to the University of Wollongong on Tuesday to engage in an Anatomy laboratory.
- College Assembly on Wednesday morning to recognise the academic achievements of our Years 11 & 12 students for the first semester of their respective courses of work.
- Year 9 & 10 elective music students attended an excursion to the Sydney Opera House on Thursday to watch a performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra
- Brainstorm Productions live performance of “Wired” to Years 7 & 8 students earlier today, which focuses on Cyberbullying and Mental Health issues.
- Diocesan Netball Championships in Berkeley for 6 teams today - Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors
- Junior NSWCCC Football Knockout round game this afternoon.
In the midst of this hive of activity, our staff have continued to work hard in preparing Semester One reports for Years 7 to 10, as well as maintain the high standards of learning and expectation in the classrooms. The past couple of weeks has been a particular challenge, as our ongoing renovations to our site have moved closer to the centre of the College, and with the noise of demolition and construction, coupled with the intermittent closure of classrooms and thoroughfares, has made the routine of our day and week somewhat disrupted. For all that our staff and students have prepared, encountered and participated in over the past weeks or so, I thank them immensely for their patience, perseverance and professionalism.
The next week appears to be no less active, as we have:
- Our Senior Netballers taking part in the Marist Netball Championships at Homebush commencing Sunday.
- The College Athletics Carnival at Campbelltown on Monday (please read the Sports section and relevant Compass notifications regarding start times, finish times and uniform expectations)
- Year 11 2025 Course information Night on Wednesday - 6.30pm KLA presentations in new STEM Block, Formal presentation in College Hall at 7pm
- Marist Super connect on Wednesday evening for our Year 12 students
- Tick Tick Boom Science Incursion for Year 10 during Lesson 1 on Thursday
- College Photos - Thursday
- Black Dog Institute Mental Fitness presentation to year 9 on Friday morning
- St. Vincent de Paul Winter Night out Appeal on Friday evening.
Thanks in advance to all staff and students for the anticipated success of each of these activities. A special mention goes out to our Year 9 debating team who will be hosting the Grand Final of the MISA Debating competition on Tuesday. It has been a significant length of time since we have had a team reach the final and we wish the staff and students involved every success.
A reminder that School photos will be taken next Thursday. Information regarding the order and purchase of the photos will be communicated early next week. No students are to be in Sports Uniform on the day and checks will be made by Year Coordinators and Pastoral Staff to ensure that the College Uniform and Grooming Policy is adhered to.

Leader of Learning - Curriculum Pedagogy & Leader of Learning - Curriculum Administration
Acting Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
Once again a range of activities took place across Years 7-12 during Pastoral time and assemblies this week. Thank you to the Year Coordinators, Stage Assistant Coordinators and Pastoral Advisors who assisted with these pastoral activities.
Brainstorm Productions
Today, Years 7 & 8 attended the theatre production “Wired”, by Brainstorm Productions. The performance endorsed by the eSafety Commissioner followed the journey of two students whose lives were spiralling in different directions: one towards stress, anxiety and overload, and the other towards depression and disconnection. When their worlds collide, the audience helps them choose a different path. Wired is an interactive theatre experience that tackles some of the big issues affecting Australian students, including social isolation, bullying, online safety, school stressors, family relationships and pressure from social media. It addresses barriers to help-seeking and provides strategies for resilience, problem-solving, goal-setting and positive mental health. Thank you to the students of Years 7 & 8 for their positive participation in this incursion. We encourage parents to ask their children about this experience and discuss some of the topics covered.
Uniform and Grooming
As we enter into the colder months, families are encouraged to review the College diary and work in partnership with the College to ensure that students are wearing the uniform correctly and representing the school with pride. Teachers are working with students to ensure that there is an understanding of College procedures and expectations, however, garments that are not a part of the College uniform will be confiscated from students particularly if this student has demonstrated a disregard for adhering to the request to remove the item previously.
There is a recurring issue on Tuesdays regarding the proper wearing of the College Sports Uniform. As indicated in the College Diary, students must wear the College knitted jumper under the College Sports Jacket for added warmth. It is important to note that students are not permitted to wear the College jumper with the tracksuit pants unless the Sports Jacket is worn over the jumper.
The College Blazer must also be worn to and from school in Term 2 & Term 3 as part of the Winter Academic Uniform.
Integrity
Students were reminded at our most recent assembly about the importance of integrity and the year's mission to ‘get off the couch and get into the game’. Students were introduced to Nick and his approach to integrity in a one-minute clip. Nick Vujicic put simply is a testament to the power of integrity. Despite the hurdles, he consistently chose to be honest with himself and others about his struggles and triumphs. He embraced his unique situation with grace and used it as a platform to inspire others. His story teaches us that true victory lies not in the absence of challenges but in the courage to face them with unwavering integrity. He is a real example of the fact that if you want something to change and achieve something, you have to do the work to make those things happen. Students were reminded of the value of a good start to the day. Starting your day right means being intentional about how you spend those first few moments. Admiral McRaven famously suggests that "if you want to change the world, start by making your bed.” Contextually, this makes a huge difference to your day here at school. Being organised from the very start of our day is reflected in how we represent ourselves with our uniform. Amongst other vital points, students were encouraged that if they wished to see change, they must be that change, as people of integrity. Instead of adding to situations of tension and conflict, take the time to get involved in the various aspects of school life that are of interest to them, from band, choir, the myriad of sporting opportunities, board game club, mindfulness club, history movie club, reading club, art club or our various cultural groups. It was reiterated to students, “It is your time to be like Nick, rather than being disappointed with something that displeases you, lean into what you do love about life, pursue relationships that bring you comfort and embrace the activities that culminate in safety, accomplishment and joy".

Knowing students and how they learn is central to quality teaching. Knowing students as readers is at the core of being able to teach reading well. Given that reading is a complex process that has intellectual, social, emotional, and cultural dimensions, getting to know students as readers is an ongoing process that requires a range of approaches.
Over the coming weeks I will be discussing specific activities which allow teachers to see reading from the perspective of students. These include using metaphor to capture levels of reading engagement, drawing reading, teacher and student reading conferences, and question prompts for reflective writing and discussion. Suggested by academics Amanda McCraw and Mary Mason in their text Activating Reading Capabilities in English, these activities reveal insights into the complexity of student reading experiences and identify the impact certain factors might have on a student’s reading capabilities.
Metaphors are powerful elements in making meaning. They are an imaginative way of describing something by referring to something else. The metaphors we create and use, help us to grasp, reflect on, and express ideas, feelings, and understandings. The metaphor of a deep-sea diver is a useful starting point when asking students to consider how deeply engaged they are in reading. A deep-sea diver explores new territory, takes risks, is curious, well-equipped, and immerses themselves in the world under water. In addition to this, an experienced deep-sea diver knows what to do in challenging situations, reflecting on knowledge gained during previous diving encounters. The deep-sea diver is a very useful metaphor for exploring the notion of deep reading and deep learning.
In contrast to the deep-sea diver and deep learning, we have surface learning. The surface reader could be compared to someone on a sailing boat cruising the ocean. A further position again – this time representing reading disengagement – could be captured in a person standing on a jetty, looking out aimlessly at the water.
Once students understand the power of metaphor to name the quality of their reading and learning experiences, they can be encouraged to find their own. My Year 9 English class responded this week with some interesting individual metaphors. Three of these included a mountain climber attempting to conquer Everest; a surfer, sitting on her board out beyond the break, waiting for the right wave to appear; and a fussy eater, with strong preferences and an unwillingness to try new foods. These identifications proved to be a rich form of insight for the students and a wonderful source of information for their teacher.

Big week of sport is coming up with our college Athletics Carnival on Monday 17 June. Some of our MISA teams are still chasing trophies with some unfortunate losses in the semi finals on Tuesday. We have grand finals this week with our Hockey and Cricket teams playing for 1st place on Tuesday. We also wish our Marist Netball team good luck in the National Marist Netball competition after months of preparation. As always keep an eye out on compass for more information on all things sport
Marist Netball
Our netballers are set to participate in the 25th Annual Marist Netball Carnival from 17-20 June. This year’s tournament is being hosted in Sydney at Olympic Park. The girls have experienced a few injuries in the lead-up, but they still have a strong chance of performing well against schools from across the country. This is the first time the girls have been involved in the carnival in several years due to COVID and other disruptions.
A big thanks to Ms Pontin and Ms Armour, who have tirelessly worked to prepare this team for the carnival. The team has been playing well in MISA and is currently in first place. We look forward to hearing about their success. Good luck, girls!
Congratulations to all involved in a great carnival!
Athletics Carnival Information
The Athletics Carnival will be held on Monday 17 June 2024 at the Campbelltown Athletics Centre Leumeah. The event schedule is as follows: the carnival will start at 8:45AM and finish at approximately 3:00PM.
For key events, students participating in the 400m and 800m races must arrive by 8:00AM, as these are competitive-only races.
Regarding transport details, students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the venue. Students who are travelling on the shuttle from school need to be onsite at 8.45 outside the chapel. A bus will depart the College at 8:30AM and return by 3:15PM, in time for afternoon buses. Students must enter from the Pembroke Road side as the pedestrian gate near the tennis courts will be locked.
For food arrangements, students should bring their own packed lunch. Limited canteen services will be available on a rotational basis by age group.
Parents are welcome to attend as spectators but must remain outside the fenced area rather than in the grandstand.
We look forward to a day of exciting competitions and great sportsmanship.
See you at the track!

Hockey 7-9 Boys ELID
|
VS BAC Draw 0-0 |
Valentino Spano | Our committed team once again demonstrated their defensive mindset keeping a clean sheet in a top of the table clash against Broughton. New recruit Valentino worked tirelessly on the wing proving too quick for opposition defenders and used his speed to get back to stop a one on one opportunity. The Broughton goalkeeper kept them in the game saving two great opportunities from Harry and Brayden to keep the scores level. A big rematch next week in the grand final with our team full of confidence. Good luck boys! |
Basketball Years 7-9 Girls HOBR
|
VS THAC Loss 50-32 |
Carla Bosco & Miyah Meurant | In the semi-finals, the MISA Junior Girls Basketball Team played against Thomas Hassle, a tough match that pushed their skills to the limit. Despite their best efforts, our team lost, meaning we'll face the winner of the other semi-final next week. Carla and Miyah stood out as this week's MVPs for their determination and strength on the court. Now, the team is focused on regrouping and coming back stronger for next week. |
Basketball Years 7-9 Boys RODC |
VS JTCC Semi Final Loss 63-25 |
Ritchie Kan | We had a tough matchup this week against John Terry. MCCC put up a good effort but struggled against a physically bigger opposition. Credit is due to the team for keeping calm and continuing to play with great sportsmanship, pushing until the end of the game. Although a disappointing result, the team is eager to play for 3rd place next week. |
Netball Years 11-12 PONT |
VS OPAC Loss 37-17 |
Kaylee Attard | The girls had a weakened side due to year 11 having an excursion. Some of our best year 10 players stepped up to take on the seniors from Oran Park. Unfortunately they were too strong and sailed out to an uncatchable early lead. Well done girls. |
