Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
This week we started Lent and the preparation toward Easter. The Gospel this Sunday (Luke 4: 1-13) recounts Jesus’ experience in the desert before He began His public ministry. During this time, the devil appears to Him three times in order to tempt Him. Jesus wandering through the desert for 40 days is reflected in our own journey toward Easter which also lasts 40 days. It is an opportunity for us to clear our mind and reflect on our own spiritual journey. We might do this by prayer, sacrifice and good works. The placing of ashes on our forehead on Ash Wednesday, is an acknowledgement of our values and lifestyle but also a powerful symbol to others that we are willing to be seen as Christian and standing with the teachings of Christ. Over the next 5 weeks, we have the time to consider how these values might be lived and expressed in our everyday interactions with others.
Last Wednesday we opened the College to visitors who may be considering submitting an enrolment application for Year 7, 2026. We estimate that we had in excess of 600 visitors and they were escorted around the College by students from Years 8 – 12. They then attended a formal presentation in the Champagnat Centre outlining our values and processes. Applications can be submitted online and are due by the last day of term 1 (April 11). Please spread the word for anyone who may be considering Mount Carmel for Year 7, 2026.
On Tuesday March 4, our Parents and Friends held their AGM and first meeting for 2025. At this meeting, the P&F Executive was elected and I have pleasure in announcing the team for 2025.
President | Mr David Campbell |
Vice President | Mr Robert Cooper |
Vice President | Mrs Glacel Zabat |
Secretary | Mrs Annick Bruce |
Treasurer | Ms Lisa Corado |
Diocesan Delegate | Mrs Andrea Galea |
The P&F is a vital contributor to the College both financially and in policy direction. I thank the outgoing executive for their support and look forward to working with the team for 2025.
Tomorrow (Friday March 7) is our pupil free Staff Development Day. This day will focus on staff spirituality and specifically will be designed around the theme of pilgrimage. Our staff will be visiting St Mary’s Cathedral and Mary Mackillop Place and will be coming together as community whilst allowing people to journey in their own way. As always, I recognise the importance of the support we get from parents and students to have these days and I thank you for enabling us to take time together to develop those connections and skills that will improve us as teachers and support staff.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Mount Carmel Catholic College has always held high expectations of students with their wearing of uniform and grooming and this focus has continued this year.
Our focus this term has been on providing more clarity to students, staff, and families about what these guidelines are. This has included the addition of several photo reference guides to refer too to compliment the guidelines in the student diary. These have been shared with students and staff at assemblies and pastoral lessons and can be accessed by parents within our College website HERE.
Our focus on our uniform and grooming guidelines, benefits both the students and the school community by:
- Promoting Equality: Uniforms help eliminate visible differences between students based on their socio-economic backgrounds. This creates a more level playing field, where students are judged based on their character and abilities rather than their clothing or appearance.
- Encouraging Discipline and Focus: Wearing uniforms and adhering to grooming guidelines can help students develop a sense of discipline and responsibility. It fosters an environment where students are expected to focus on their academic performance and behaviour rather than on their clothing choices.
- Building School Identity and Unity: Uniforms can instil a sense of pride and belonging. When students wear the same clothes, it promotes a strong sense of school identity and camaraderie, helping to strengthen community spirit and reduce divisions among students.
- Reducing Peer Pressure: By removing the need to constantly choose outfits, uniforms help minimise the peer pressure associated with wearing the latest fashion trends. This reduces stress and competition among students and fosters a more inclusive and less materialistic environment.
- Enhancing Safety and Security: Uniforms make it easier to identify students on campus or during field trips, ensuring better security and reducing the risk of outsiders gaining access to the school grounds. This is particularly important in maintaining a safe environment for students.
- Encouraging Professionalism: Uniforms and grooming guidelines help instil a sense of professionalism in students. They are encouraged to present themselves in a neat and orderly manner, which can translate into better attitudes towards their studies and future careers.
- Reducing Distractions: Uniforms and grooming policies help minimize distractions that might arise from diverse or extreme clothing choices. Students can focus more on learning and less on trends or what others are wearing.
Please do not hesitate to direct any concerns or further clarifications regarding our uniform and grooming guidelines to your young person’s Year Coordinator.
Stay safe, keep well, go gently.

As we journey through Lent, this may provide you and your family with some ideas to get more out of the 40 days journey to Easter.
March is the month of St. Joseph! St. Joseph holds a revered and pivotal role, recognized as one of the most important saints in the Catholic Church. As the earthly father of Jesus Christ and the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph played a crucial part in the Holy Family. His significance lies not only in his familial role but also in his unwavering faith, righteousness, and humble obedience to God’s divine plan for him.
The Feast of St. Joseph is on 19 March.
He is the powerful intercessor for various aspects of life and is the patron saint of fathers, workers, immigrants, and a model for those seeking guidance in their daily struggles. Many turn to St. Joseph in times of need, seeking his intercession for employment, family matters, and spiritual guidance.
St. Joseph is admired for his obedience to God, his unwavering faith, and his role in protecting and providing for Mother Mary and Jesus. St. Joseph’s prominence in the Catholic Church emphasizes the value of a righteous and humble life and a complete and total surrender to the Lord.
St. Joseph, Protector of the Church, pray for us!
We have recently moved the the College's statue of St Joseph to the Religious Education block. The picture shows some of the titles that are associated with St Joseph.
Yesterday, we went to the Emmaus centre in Campbelltown for the year 8 Catholic Leadership Cluster day, meeting students from other schools where we participated in activities to build towards the creation of a Digital Discipleship project. I was joined by Dylan Reyes, Danielle Housea, Vanessa Rees, Emily Allen and Paige Merlino from year 8. I enjoyed planning strategies that helped to guide our Year 8 cohort to get everyone through their challenges this year. We plan to make an informative video on the issues of Year 8 via interviews. We are going to interview Year 8 to hear their experiences, and have senior students and staff respond with their advice or insight. We are doing this to spread awareness and give ideas to help combat many of the issues that were brainstormed at this event.
Today was a great day and we are looking forward to the future in Year 12 to study for our HSC and come back to the Emmaus Conference Centre. I hope that we can look forward to achieving the success we see in our senior students in the future of our schooling years.

Learning & Teaching at the College
Reports on Student Learning
Reporting is “the process of providing feedback to students, parents/carers, and other teachers about student progress” (NESA, 2021). At Mount Carmel Catholic College, our formal reports are designed to provide parents/guardians and students with constructive feedback to guide improvement throughout a student’s time at the College. Formal reports occur four times annually, where students and parents are given information on the academic and personal profile achievements of the student. The report is designed to improve learning and ensure that students have their strengths recognised as well as direction for where they might improve. The reports are designed to reflect the College's vision to be a ‘Christ-Centred community providing opportunities for excellence’.
At Mount Carmel, we issue formal reports in two forms:
- Tracking Reports: At the midpoint of each semester, tracking reports are distributed to provide an indicator of how a student is progressing throughout their course work. These reports provide an overview, with an A-E grade awarded for both the student’s Academic Achievement and Effort in each course. For Years 7-10, these reports do not include a pastoral profile, records of attendance or comments. The Year 11 Term 1 reports do include a pastoral profile and record of attendance.
- Academic Reports: At the conclusion of each semester (Years 7-10 and 12) or midpoint and conclusion of the academic year (Year 11), students receive an academic report which provides a comprehensive overview of a student’s achievement of course specific objectives, supported by an academic profile (organisation and assessment, contribution to learning and interpersonal skills) and teacher comments. These reports also feature a pastoral profile and pastoral teacher comment, including a summary of involvement in co-curricular activities and a record of attendance data.
The consideration and effort that goes into the creation of these reports ensures that they are a tool to guide improvement and learning growth. The conversations that follow the distribution of reports, whether at Parent/Student/Teacher interviews, within the pastoral and academic classroom or at home are critical moments for feedback and feed forward.
All reports are distributed via Compass. In Term 1 the following reports will be issued:
Yr 11 Semester 1 Tracking Report - Friday 22 March
Yr 12 Half Yearly Academic Report - Friday 5 April
Yr 7 -10 Semester 1 Tracking Report - Friday 12 April
Year 12 Parent/Teacher/Student INTERVIEWS
Wednesday 9 April
Year 12 Parents and Guardians are encouraged to book interviews with your child’s teachers to discuss their progress and determine strategies to prepare for their final six months of secondary education. Interviews for Year 12 2024 are being held on Wednesday April 10 between 4pm and 8pm in the Champagnat Centre. Bookings can be made via the Compass Parent Portal and will be open from 4pm on Monday 18 March. A guide on how to make a booking can be seen here. If you are experiencing any issues with logging into Compass or making any appointments, please contact Mrs Rina Domingo via an email to domingor01@dow.catholic.edu.au or call the College on 9603 3000.

Year 7 Camp
Last week, our Year 7 cohort embarked on an action-packed overnight adventure at The Tops Conference Centre. Guided by our mantra, Find Your Spark, students embraced a variety of thrilling activities, including the giant swing, archery, survivor courses, and leaps of faith, all while forming connections with their new peers. In the evening, we gathered for a meaningful liturgy inspired by the life of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial Saint, reminding us that we can make a difference at any stage of our lives. We hope Year 7 camp serves as a launchpad for lasting friendships, unforgettable experiences, and the courage to step beyond our comfort zones to discover our true potential.

Creating a Productive and Safe Study Environment
As we embark on another exciting school year, it’s essential to ensure our students have the tools and environment they need to succeed academically. One of the most impactful ways parents can support their children’s learning is by creating a productive and safe study space at home.
It can be critical to set up a distraction-free, organised, and comfortable study space for your child to help them build routine and focus on the tasks they require. This can include setting up the right space at home, and the right processes.
Here are some article links to support parents/carers to create great study spaces

Volleyball Years 7-9 Boys OCOB |
Win 2-0 | Jarrod Berry |
The boys came into today’s match up riding on the coat tails of last week’s dominant win in the season opener. Being an away game the team was out of their comfort zone at Thomas Hassell Anglican College. The boys started well with a dominant display winning the first set comfortably with some big plays from Jarrod Berry. The momentum was taken into the second set and another comfortable win for the boys. Congratulations on an excellent win. |
Volleyball Years 7-9 Girls NIMM |
Win 2-0 |
Sapana Ghale |
The girls went into round 2 confident after a solid start last week, they started strong and were able to win several excellent points to take the first set. Thomas Hassall rallied in the second set which saw several long rallies and end to end play. Both teams were fantastic in their teamwork, shots and overall game play which ensured an exciting and close match. The opposition were ahead and close to snatching the second set however, the girls managed to take a few close points to take the second set and ultimately the match. This week’s MVP goes to Sapana Ghale who demonstrated solid defensive work, movement on court and made several excellent shots throughout the match. A fantastic effort by all – well done girls! |
Indoor Cricket Years 7-9 Girls HEAS |

Samantha Stewart |
Unfortunately, we lost our first game of the MISA cricket season, but there were some great moments throughout the match. While there are improvements to be made in our bowling, Samantha Stewart played some fantastic shots in the second innings, bringing us close to BAC’s score, looking forward to next week and hopefully securing a win. |
Basketball Years 10-12 Boys KAWA |
Win 81-44 |
Chukie Okonkwo |
The boys stuck to their guns with a dominating win against St Benedict’s. The first half was quite evenly contested between both teams however the boys took advantage of their fast breaks and some individual brilliance from Chukie Okonkwo and Isaac Ramos to create an entertaining spectacle. The second half was dominated by our boys as they were clinical with each offensive play. Congratulations to all involved. |
Basketball Years 10-12 Girls ABRN |
Loss 17-10 |
Chelsea Baltazar |
It was a tough game against St Benedict’s today. The girls were in the game in the first half however St Benedicts kept the pressure on and forced their way in with intercepts and great passes to take the win. Our girls never give up and although they weren’t playing with a clear head today they always play with their heart. Congratulations to our MVP Chelsea Baltazar. With a bye next week, we will work on our rebounds, lay ups, teamwork and communication. Let’s go MCCC! |
Oztag Years 10-12 Boys CAML |
Win 13-2 |
Nicholas Lalic |
Round 2 saw the Opens Boys continue their incredibly dominant start to the 2025 OzTag Season, running out 13 - 2 winners over Thomas Hassalll Anglican College. In cooler conditions compared to Round 1, the boys started incredibly fast once again, demonstrating excellent ball movement in attack, and very sound defensive principles, spending a good portion of the first half without the ball. A notable mention must go to Nicholas Lalic making his season debut an emphatic one, crossing for 6 tries, showing a fantastic set of wheels on the wing. Additionally, Preston Galant managed to get off the duck egg. The boys eagerly look forward to Round 3 against Magdalene Catholic College. |
Softball Years 7-9 Boys HAGJ |
Loss 9-0 |
Cooper Smith |
A disappointing result, but promising improvements to be found, and another great display of sportsmanship and camaraderie. After a strong first dig, getting John Terry out with only two home, MCCC faced a strong infield, but no batters were out without making a good run. The second innings showed some excellent outfield catches to MVP Cooper Smith, but the batters at John Terry managed to pile on the runs when they found some holes. Nevertheless MCCC once again demonstrated their grit with encouragement and smiles until the end, and a shout out to John Terry who took to the field opening a third innings just to let us get some batting practice in knowing they’d need to leave before getting to bat themselves. |
Hockey Years 7-9 Girls ELID |
Loss 4-1 |
Lyla Greach |
After a quick start from Broughton to score we settled down and followed Lyla’s example to equalise. A back and forth game resulted in Haruka forcing a great save from the opposition goalkeeper. Ultimately, the BAC experience came through with two late goals to win the game. Many positives were taken from the game and the girls are in great spirits leading into the next few games. |

The team showed an improvement in their serving overall with two standouts Juliana and Manizort who delivered several unanswered points and ensured that JT fell behind early in each set.
