Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Last Sunday’s Gospel was the reading from St Luke about the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18: 9 – 14). In this story, the pharisee goes to the temple and thanks God that he is so much better than the tax collector who has a reputation for theft and dishonesty. At the same time, the tax collector asks God’s forgiveness for the wrongs that he has done in his life. One of the main points in this parable is that we all have the opportunity and ability to improve the way we live. For the pharisee, it may be around the way that he treats others and the assumption that he is better than another. For the tax collector, it is not just about being sorry for his actions, but looking at how he can make amends or change his behaviours. At our College Leadership Team planning day on Thursday, we reviewed our strategic directions for the next few years and there was a significant discussion around the mission and vision for Mount Carmel Catholic College. One of the interesting questions was whether each member of our community knows and understands our purpose. Part of our mission is around being Christ-centred and living the values of the Gospels. In line with this Gospel, do we judge others simply to make decisions about their worth? Do we recognise that we are all capable of improvement and able to live the Gospel message more fully. Over the last few months of this year, and the first of next year, I will be asking our community to reflect on these values and how we can better action the vision of Mount Carmel.
Last Monday, Mrs Murphy, Ms Young and I attended a Diocesan-wide symposium on Collaborative Inquiry. I have mentioned before that Mrs Murphy was appointed as our Literacy Instructional Coach during 2019 and this symposium enabled us to share our literacy journey with our other secondary schools. In listening to some of the wonderful things that are happening elsewhere, I was proud of the initiatives that have happened here around literacy improvement. This included things such as dialogue and mentoring of staff, writing clubs, literacy initiatives in classes and the parent presentation to the P&F. There was a discussion amongst our staff about how these initiatives would be extended in 2020, and these will involve opportunities for parents to understand and interact with literacy at the College. I encourage all parents to watch for these initiatives and take part when they are offered.
In a few weeks, Year 11 parents will be receiving academic reports for the Preliminary courses. These reports will look significantly different to the reports that have been distributed over the last few years. This is a result of our move to Compass as a student management system and significant work around what information should be given that will assist parents in your discussions with your children around their progress. A letter will accompany these reports to explain the new format, however, I am excited about the improvements. The junior reports that are distributed at the end of this year will remain in the current format and will move to the new template from Semester 1 next year. I welcome any feedback following the distribution of these new reports.
I was excited to hear that our Year 7-8 boys Basketball team had great success at the NSW Combined Catholic College Basketball competition held earlier this week. This team placed 2nd overall which is an enormous achievement. I am sure there will be more information around this team but I would just like to congratulate the boys and their coaches on what is a memorable result.
On Sunday November 3, we will be holding our second College working bee. This working bee is for the families of MacKillop and Murray houses. During these working bees, we take the opportunity to clean the external parts of buildings, repaint some of the furniture and re-bark and weed the gardens. All assistance is appreciated and we will thank those families who attend, in future newsletters. The day will begin at 9 am and conclude by 12 pm with a sausage sizzle thank you organised by the P&F. Please feel free to come for the whole time or any part you can assist.

Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately cannot be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the Sports Office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the College’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Advisor for clarification.

At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the College year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NSW SPORT (formerly known as Catholic Schools Sport Services) UPDATES
NSWCCC Basketball Championships
Day 1 - Monday 28 October
Monday was the first day of our CCC basketball tournament. Everyone had to wake up very early to get to school by 6:45 am. Our first game at Penrith Basketball Stadium was against Patrician Brothers Fairfield at 9:00 am. When we arrived it was already 8:30 am, giving us only 20 minutes to warm up. Even so, we beat Patrician Brothers Fairfield 56-31. We finished around 10 am after playing a 20-minute half-game and our next game was at 11:00 am against All Saints College Maitland, giving our team an hour break to rest, stretch and eat some snacks.
Our second game was very exciting because even though we did not play our best, the intensity of the game was thrilling. It was close at the start, but we ended up winning that game as well, placing us tied 1st. This meant that if we won our next game to decide the number 1, we would be top of our pool and verse the 2nd best team of pool B. But before we played the deciding game at 2:00 pm, it was time to do a little more team bonding and get some lunch at Subway.
When we got back to the stadium, we had a bit more energy than before due to the Subway and were pumped for the last deciding game. The first part of the game everyone was tired and very sluggish. But after some fresh legs went on and the starters got a rest everyone was alive again and ready to play. We ended up finishing the day undefeated and feeling great and ready for the next day. Little did we know who we would verse on the next day. The ride back to school was fun and we arrived at school around 5:30 pm. Afterwards everyone got home and relaxed getting ready for the tiring and challenging day ahead. -Wilson Asuit (Yr 8)
Day 2 - Tuesday 29 October 2019
Tuesday, the second day of the CCC basketball tournament was a stressful one because if we lost we would be knocked out of the whole tournament. It started with the team gathering at the school around 8:00 am joined with the teachers Mr Huntly and Mrs Abra. We left the school around 8:30 am knowing that we would have to play our best or go home.
When we got to Penrith we got some time to rest and then went straight to start warm-ups before the game. Our first game was against a school named McCarthy Catholic College Tamworth were we played strong throughout the whole game and won. We showed all other teams that we were a team that would not be defeated easily. After our game we rested and watched other schools play their matches before we went straight to our next game against St John's College Dubbo. The game was at 12:20 pm. Both teams were evenly matched but MCCC pulled through and won earning ourselves a place in the championships.
After the game our team rested our bodies because the team started to feel fatigued. After the rest we ran some drills to get ready for the finals. The team we were versing in the grand final match was Patrician Brothers' College Blacktown. They were an overwhelming team as they were bigger, taller and stronger then us on the outside. The game was rough, not all calls were in our favour, but in the end all we could do was play our best and that is the attitude we took onto the court.
In the end we lost and came 2nd in the state out of 140+ Catholic schools who could’ve entered the competition. We got our awards then after that we took the bus back home and spent time together as a team at McDonald's.
I would like to thank Mrs Abra and Mr Huntly along with our 2 helpers Nathaniel and Gab for assisting on the day. I would also like to thank Mr Harpely for all of his dedication and training in the lead up to the carnival and Mrs Pontin for organising the event and giving us this opportunity. Bring on 2020! -Pete Baltazar (Yr 8)
Team List: Adam Prasad ©, Simun Krpez, Kynan Summers, Brayden Greer, Wilson Asuit, Michael Bzdega, Will Radman, Pete Baltazar and Paul Bentham.

Coaches: Mr Harpley, Mr Huntly and Mrs Abra.
Thank you to Wilson and Pete for writing the above report. I just wanted to echo our absolute excitement and congratulations to the boys and their coaches Mr Harpley, Mr Huntly and Mrs Abra. This achievement is one that the boys should be extremely proud of and one that isn’t easy to achieve. MCCC SPORTING STARS
Braith Young-Carpenter (Year 10) - Boxing
Braith of Year 10 is an accomplished boxer who has been competing in his chosen sport for a number of years. His busy training regime challenges his body physically and mentally to prepare for the various events that are scheduled in his sporting calendar.
Recently Braith travelled to the Gold Coast where he competed at the Australian Under 19’s Boxing Championships. This event brings together the most accomplished boxers in the Under 19’s age group.
Braith was victorious in his first bout of the championships where he was victorious over his QLD opponent. He then earned a place in the gold medal bout where he was up against an experienced Victorian fighter who has multiple fights under his belt. Braith unfortunately lost on points in this bout but finished with the Australian silver medal. A phenomenal achievement of which he should be extremely proud.
Braith will head back into training in the coming weeks in preparation for his next challenge early next year. Congratulations Braith! Your MC family are proud.
If you have recently competed at a representative level in your chosen sport we want to hear about it! Email Mrs Pontin at pontint01@dow.catholic.edu.au to share your sporting success stories
