Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
This week we undertake the beginning of the Season of Lent. This is an opportunity to prepare for the Easter ceremonies and to reflect on the passion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It is also a time of sacrifice and contemplation within our own lives and the way that we relate and walk in communion with those around us. The Lenten Season began with the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday. This ceremony at Mount Carmel, brought together our community and, with Catholic communities worldwide, we received the ashes made from the burnt palms used on Palm Sunday last year. This is a visible mark that we belong to a greater community and that our thoughts should be on both our own mortality and redemption but also on the care and concern for those less fortunate. Throughout Lent, students will be encouraged to sacrifice for others and reflect on their own spiritual goals. Further in this newsletter, I have reproduced the Bishop’s message on Penance and sacrifice.
On Thursday we held our annual College Swimming Carnival. This event was only for competitors and Years 7 and 12. It is a lovely community start for our new Year 7 students and an opportunity for them to experience the camaraderie of the Year 12 students outside the normal school setting. Each year we evaluate how this event is run keeping in mind the capacity restrictions at the venue and the staffing implications. As always, I am happy to take feedback either via email or at the P&F meetings.
Last week we distributed permission notes regarding the publication of student images and works. These permissions are required to be gained each year and are used to determine which students are able to appear in College newsletters, school photos, the yearbook, the College website and in some circumstances, the CEO website or other publications. These permissions are extremely important and, as I am sure you will understand, need to be accurate in order to be implemented. Please return these forms if you have not already done so and where possible, we would love to publish photos and works of students where appropriate.
Next Wednesday March 4, Year 7 parents will have the opportunity to attend the College for the first Year 7 Literacy evening. A number of our English staff will be present to explain their current programs in order to assist parents in knowing how to support their children. This is the start of what we hope will be a number of such opportunities. I thank Mrs Murphy and her staff in advance for their time, experience and effort in giving parents this opportunity.
A reminder that P&F meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month during term times at 7pm in room I3. All parents are warmly invited to these meetings. The next will be held on March 10 and will begin with the AGM.
On Sunday March 15, the first College Working Bee will be taking place. This is for families of students in Avila and Howard Houses and will begin at 9 am and conclude with a sausage sizzle by Midday. The P&F will be organising the refreshments and volunteers will be asked to assist with various jobs including gardening, weeding, painting, cleaning and furniture moving. All volunteers are welcome and this community event assists the College in carrying out of minor maintenance and College improvement.
Once again, a reminder that our Year 7, 2021 Information evening will be held next Monday, March 2 at the College in the Champagnat Centre. This meeting will begin at 7pm. Please spread the word to anyone who may be considering enrolling in Year 7 at Mount Carmel for 2021.

Ash Wednesday – 26February 2020
This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice.
We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through your prayer, fasting and almsgiving by supporting Project Compassion. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via our website at lent.caritas.org.au

Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards, (Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or cannot participate on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for next Tuesday.

DIOCESAN EVENTS – TERM 1
Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
Diocesan Tennis
On 20 February, we were privileged to compete at the 2020 Diocesan Tennis Carnival which was held at Beaton Park, in Wollongong.
The girls played their opening match against a strong Corpus Christi team. The girls had hit some great shots and rapid serves, but unfortunately lost both their doubles matches. The singles matches were up next but unsuccessfully lost two sets out of three, which meant they weren’t able to progress in the main draw. They continued to play well in the consolation round and came out with two wins in the doubles.
The boys were lucky enough to advance to the second round as Magdalene withdrew from the carnival. Their opening match was against a tough St John's team. They started off with all four singles matches and came back with a tight result, winning two sets out of four. With their speedy serves and jaw dropping winners, they again ended up with another close result, winning one of the two sets in doubles. With tied sets it had all come down to games, and the boys unfortunately lost the round with a narrow margin of 3 games.
Girls team:
- Paige Haubenwallner
- Scarlett Ring
- Rose Benjocki
- Lauryna Malaesilia
Boys team:
- Toby Curry
- Dominik Raffoul
- Harrison Petrovic
- Julian Fuentes
As a team, we all would like to thank Mrs Hills and Mr Mackney for this wonderful experience, as well as them taking their time off class to support, supervise and drive us to the venue. Thank you once again.
Rose Benjocki
On Monday 24 February, 3 energised teams travelled to Thomas Dalton Park Fairy Meadow to compete in the 2020 Diocesan Touch Football Tournament.
U13’s
The final results of the U13’s team included 2 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses throughout the day. This resulted in placing 6th out of 9 teams.
U15’s
The U15’s team were coached by Ms Bowen and led by Captains Hunter Tracey and Luke Prebble. The day started tough with two fierce and polished opponents in Edmund Rice and Holy Spirit. Following two consecutive losses the team re-grouped to consolidate structures, set plays and formations. A focus on gaining metres for the first 3 touches before utilising switches, wraps and draw/pass combinations proved to be an effective strategy moving forward in the day. Players began communicating with one another and drawing on the speed of players within the team to create scoring opportunities. The final results of the U15’s team included 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses throughout the day. This resulted in placing 5th out of 10 teams. It was an absolute pleasure to coach these talented students throughout the day and to see their growth from one game to the next.
Opens
The final results of the Open’s team included 5 wins, 2 draws and 0 losses. This resulted in placing =2nd with Holy Spirit with all boys school Edmund Rice taking out the win.
Thank you to all students that attended the tournament for their exceptional sportsmanship, skill and enthusiasm demonstrated on the day. We also extend our thanks to Jade Constance and Cassie Lloyd who were our student referee’s on the day of the tournament.
We would further like to extend our congratulations to the following students who had selectors recognise their touch football talent on the day through being selected to represent the Wollongong Diocesan at the NSWCCC tournament later this term. In addition, we had a number of students selected as shadows for the Wollongong Diocesan team including. We congratulate the following students for this exceptional achievement:
- Jack Goncalves (Year 10 - selected in the Open’s team)
- Matthew Galvin (Year 10 - selected in the Open’s team)
- Nathaniel Calvelo (Year 11 - shadow for the Open’s team
- Luke Prebble (Year 10 - shadow for the U15’s team)
- Hunter Tracey (Year 9 - shadow for the U15’s team)
This tournament marked one of the first representative opportunities on the 2020 sporting calendar and it was clear that the students are already vying for points to earn the Wollongong Diocesan Vince Villa Trophy.
