Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
This past Sunday saw the celebration of the Feast of Pentecost, which takes place fifty days after Easter and celebrates the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, as foretold by Christ himself. In our Christian tradition, the Feast of Pentecost is significant as it marks the birth of the Church as it was the Holy Spirit descending on the disciples that empowered them to fulfill the mission of Jesus by sharing the Good News and living as witnesses to it.
Earlier this week, the College hosted our June P & F Meeting which was highlighted by a presentation from our College English Coordinator and Literacy Instructional Coach, Ms Clare Murphy, who provided an inspiring insight into her dual role with a particular focus on the joys and benefits of reading. As always, I thank the parents who were in attendance for their valuable contributions and once again encourage all parents to consider your attendance at our next P & F gathering which will take place on Tuesday 13 April.
With the final 3 weeks of term now upon us, the attention of staff at the College has turned to the writing of the Semester One reports which, in turn, will significantly inform discussions at the Year 7-10 Parent/Teacher/Student Interview sessions that will take place in Week 10 on Monday July 1 (4pm-8pm), Thursday July 4 (4pm-8pm) and Friday July 5 (8:30am - 12:30pm). In the past, the evening sessions have been limited to two specific House groups each night, however, this year we have opened up all three time slots to all students in an effort to make each session as accessible to as many families as possible. These interviews can now be booked via your regular Compass logins and I encourage all parents to make the most of the opportunity to meet with your son or daughters teachers as a means of reflecting on their progress throughout Semester One and setting a course of action for the remainder of 2019.
As you would be aware, this edition of the College newsletter is being distributed a day earlier than normal due to the pupil free day tomorrow which will allow all staff to be in attendance at our annual spirituality day. This day will be a unique opportunity for the staff of the College to reflect on the Marist spirituality that is so prominent here at Mount Carmel and I thank the parents who have made alternative care arrangements for their sons and daughters in advance of this day.
Mr David Cloran
Acting Principal
Consent Form - Use of Student Images / Work
As previously requested, we ask all Parents/Guardians to complete and return the Consent Form for use of Student Images/Work. This can now be downloaded from the Forms and Documents attachments on the lefthand side of the Newsletter. This is a requirement from the Catholic Education Office and I thank those families who have already returned the relevant form.

College Sport at Mount Carmel
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their Compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply a note to the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.

TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.

Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.

NSWCCC Football Knockout - Wednesday 12 June 2019
On Wednesday this week Mr King took the Years 7-10 MCCC Football team down to the NSWCCC Football Knockout carnival at Balgownie. The team has been preparing for this carnival since the beginning of the term - attending regular training sessions of a morning with their coach Mr King.
The boys were up against a strong Edmund Rice team first up. The match was a nail-biter with our boys missing a few opportunities early in the match. At the conclusion of the game the score was locked at 0-0 and golden goal time began. The boys, and Mr King, really didn’t want it to come to penalties. In the last minute of golden goal time, William Churchin (Yr 10) slotted a lovely goal earning the team a 1-0 victory - but despite the celebrations the boys then needed to back up for a second knockout game against John Therry.
The boys went onto the field with confidence and determination. They played hard for the entire match. Bailey Smith (Yr 8) was impressive on the field. The score ended up 5-1 with Samuel Sisounon (Yr 10) getting a hat trick!
Congratulations boys and Mr King. We look forward to hearing how you progress at the quarter final event in July.
NOMINATIONS – APPLICATION PROCESS (To self-nominate and get approved for these events, students need to be competing at a representative level in their chosen sport).

Read LessA huge thank you again, to all the parents, students and staff who are continuing to support this fantastic initiative. After conversations with many students I am so impressed that they have taken this cause on board with the passion and commitment that they have. Below is just an example of the onging commitment of the students with the support of their workplaces. Thank you to Bianca Alberts and Caitlin Druce who have collected this huge box of lids from Minto McDonalds where the girls work.
We are again participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn promotion and would appreciate your support until the 25 June 2019.
Stickers can be forwarded to the Front Office.
