Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
The Gospel reading from this past week is often referred to as the “Feeding of the 5000” which was taken from Luke’s account of Jesus’ feeding of the masses from five loaves and two fish. We are told of the disciples approaching Jesus and asking that he send the thousands that had gathered to see him, back to their towns to source their own food for the evening. Rejecting this request, Jesus instructed his disciples to collect the loaves and fish from a young man in the crowd before spreading it among his followers to the point where each were satisfied. In addition to this miracle being further evidence of the earthly presence of God among us, it is also seen as evidence of God’s promise to provide us with all that is required in order to sustain us. Significantly, for a College community such as ours, the fact that the loaves and fish were supplied from one young man among the thousands of followers, we are also reminded of the significant contribution that our young people have to make towards our College, our local community and the broader Church in general.
As you would be aware, this coming week will see a number of opportunities provided for Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews to take place, in addition to the distribution of the Semester One reports. Once again, I would encourage all parents to make themselves available on either Monday or Thursday evening, or Friday morning in order to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss their report, reflect on Semester One and to set a course of action for the second half of the year. The PTS/Conference bookings can be made now via the parent portal on Compass.
This coming Thursday, a number of Mt Carmel students will join Miss Donellan, Miss Bowen and Mr Rees as they depart on our 2019 Thailand Immersion. As has been the case in previous years, it is hoped that this experience will be as equally rewarding for our students, as well as for the young people within the communities that they will be working with. I thank all the parents and friends of the College who attended our fund-raising trivia night last week and particularly thank the teachers who are travelling with our students in order for them to receive such a valuable experience. We look forward to receiving their updates and hearing of their travels upon their return.
Finally this week, I would like to congratulate a number of our junior students who were recognised this week by the Catholic Education Office after their artworks were selected to appear in an art display at the head office in Wollongong. Director of Schools, Mr Peter Turner, passed on his personal congratulations and expression of thanks to these fine young artists from Mt Carmel. I particularly acknowledge three Year 8 students Merryn Clarke, Daniela Miletic and Max Bakulic, in addition to Leilani Masilungan from Year 9.

Consent Form - Use of Student Images / Work
As previously requested, we ask all Parents/Guardians to complete and return the Consent Form for use of Student Images/Work. This can now be downloaded from the Forms and Documents attachments on the lefthand side of the Newsletter. This is a requirement from the Catholic Education Office and I thank those families who have already returned the relevant form.
On Tuesday 25th June 11RCS, who are studying Being Catholic, participated in the creation of an Installation across Mount Carmel. This involved the drawing of the outline of the human body containing beliefs of being Catholic including Finding God in all things, Love One Another, Reach out to others, Follow in the footsteps of Jesus and Walk in Truth. The goal of the activity was to spread a reminder of the Gospel Values across the school and hope that students stopped to look and think about them. It was a great success.
On 11 June, the Year 9 cohort of 2019 were given the opportunity to witness a one-man play titled Fightin’ the Kaiser. Set in a veterans’ hospital after the Great War, the play captivatingly depicted the aftermath of the First World War as well as allowed students to gain an insight into the experiences of soldiers themselves. The actor took on the role of a survivor of the war and engaged his audience by telling the story of how he coped with the horrors of war. The play explored the different dangers and injuries experienced by soldiers and showed the long-term effects that were suffered.
The actor stated that his performance was based purely off primary sources which made the show all the more exciting while staying educational. The performance was engaging, with the acting eliciting audience participation through the inclusion of selected students to play a role. This further promoted an understanding of the character’s stories which reflected real-life stories of World War One soldiers. Overall, the whole performance provided an informative learning experience, developing students’ understanding of WWI and encouraging empathy for those called to war.

College Sport at Mount Carmel
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their Compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply a note to the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
TERM 3 SPORTS LIST
Years 8-11 will be posted on the sports notice boards by Monday. This will allow students to check their sport group and have the opportunity to discuss any potential changes in preparation for next term. Changes will close at the end of week 10.
COLLEGE CARNIVAL TRAINING - CROSS COUNTRY & ATHLETICS
This year our vision and motto for college sport is ‘MC Teamwork Makes the PB Dream Work’. To get one step closer to reaching our goal of improving our Diocesan carnival results we are offering students the opportunity to partake in carnival training during sport time on a Tuesday afternoon.
Students can sign up for Carnival Training outside the sports office. Staff members will take students through a range of training exercises and run a organised program to improve student cardiovascular endurance and fitness as well as discuss running technique, race plans and other important considerations for achieving good results on the cross country and athletics track. Please see the schedule below:
Term 2 - Cross Country / Athletics Training
Term 3 - Athletics Training
You must attend the event to be considered for the Diocesan team.

Read LessOn Friday 31st of May Mount Carmel Catholic Catholic College hosted their annual Athletics Carnival at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. The weather was perfect for a carnival - the sun was shining, the wind thankfully died down and the students were ready to show the College community what they had to offer on the track and in the field.
The day started with our 1500m event - a challenging event that tests the cardiovascular endurance and race plans of our long distance runners. We had some phenomenal efforts early which really set the tone for the remainder of the carnival.
The 100m sprint was our second track event and there were some fast times recorded on the day. Nathan Cann (Yr 12) led the pack in the 17+ years age group running the quickest time on the day. There were also some excellent times recorded from our year 7 students who impressed the College community in their first athletics carnival appearance.
The field events were also exciting. The boys high jump event always brings a crowd and this year it was the 17+ age group who had people sitting on the edge of their seats. It was a competitive contest between Larry Kingsley (Yr 11), Dwayne Brunt (Yr 12), Nicholas Morabito (Yr 12) and Frank Fagatuai (Yr 12) with Larry winning the event. Tye Fepuleai (Yr 8) impressed again jumping a phenomenal 1.70m - well done Tye!
The relay events were again an exciting end to the day. The mighty Murray house dominated winning 4 of the 6 relay events! Congratulations!
Athletics age champions are determined throughout the carnival. These champions are based on results throughout the day. When students compete in events they earn themselves points towards the age champion title. Congratulations to the following students who are the 2019 College Athletics Age Champions.

Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. It’s the last puzzle of the year - until it returns in September for the next round 2019/2020! Thank you to all of you for being involved and participating so well. I know that it started off strong and waned towards the end but I hope after a nice break, we come back at the end of Term 3 with a renewed sense of curiosity.
We’re finishing with a simple but difficult puzzle. This was written by a man of the name Bob Vertes, who is a font of incredible creative mathematical ideas.
Good Luck and I will return in September with more puzzle goodness!
Thanks, Mr Withnall.
