Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
As the term, and semester draws to a close, I take the opportunity this week to thank our College community for the work and support that has gone into a busy and, on any measure, successful term. Recent weeks alone have seen us hold our P&F Debutante Ball, celebrate Champagnat Day, participate in our annual athletics carnival and, over the course of the past week, held our Semester One Parent/Teacher/Student Interview sessions. Most significantly, each one of these major events provided a genuine opportunity for parents and friends of the College to engage with their sons and/or daughters education. This partnership is of such importance to us and I sincerely thank all those who were able to be present for one, or all, of these events. I assure you that these opportunities will continue into Semester Two, commencing in Week One next term where we will once again gather as a College community on Friday 26 July at 10am in the Champagnat Centre for our 2019 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast Day Mass (please be seated by 9:45am). As always, parents and friends are most welcome to join us for the Mass and a light morning tea that will follow.
As I mentioned, this past week has provided three opportunities for parents to collect their son/daughters Semester One report, meet with each of their teachers to discuss their progress to this point of the year, and develop a plan to approach the second half of 2019. I trust that these interview sessions were of benefit to both students and their parents and I sincerely hope that the feedback that was provided via both the report and interviews, provided ‘food for thought’ in planning for next term and beyond. I particularly encourage students to respond to feedback that was consistently delivered by a number of their teachers across a range of subjects.
Over the coming holiday period, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish will be celebrating their Feast Day by holding their Annual Parish Fiesta on Sunday 14 July. Bishop Brian Mascord will lead the celebration of the Eucharist from 10am, which will be followed by the Fiesta which will take place in the parish surrounds and includes a variety of music, games and entertainment featuring a number of Mount Carmel students. All are most welcome to attend and join the celebrations.
At the start of next term, we will welcome back Mr Andre Daniels to the College who will be joining our PDHPE department in place of Mr Rocco Badolato. Andre is familiar to many in our community having taught here previously, and we welcome him back until the end of the current school year. I also take the opportunity to formally welcome Mr Dean Clark to the College, who has joined our TAS department in a permanent capacity. Dean brings a wealth of experience to the role and I welcome him to the Mount Carmel community. As a result of these changes, I also congratulate Mr Kevin Harpley who has moved from his position as Year 8 Coordinator to that of Year 11 Coordinator, and Mrs Clarissa Pearce who has now commenced officially as our Year 8 Coordinator.
Wishing you all a very safe, enjoyable and peaceful break.
David Cloran
Acting Principal
Next term there will be classes offered at the College for those students who would like to complete the sacrament of Confirmation.
If you are interested in having your son / daughter participate in the program, please contact the College before the end of the term, so that information about the program may be provided to you.

DOW Regional Mbot Coding Competition
On 26 June, ten daring students embarked on an exhilarating journey where they were physically, intellectually and emotionally put to the test. The mBot Challenge is a rigorous STEM mBot tournament consisting of challenging activities within three categories: dance, maze and sumo.
The dancing activity required students to choose an appropriate 1-2min excerpt of a song for the mBot to dance to. They were judged on their ability to keep to mBot in time and the aesthetics of their dance floor and mBot’s costume. This was then judged again using a random song to which students were given approximately an hour to code to.
The maze challenged requested students code an mBot to exit a maze at different starting points within the maze and the sumo was coding an mBot to push the opposing teams mbot outside a ring whilst remaining in their own ring. Posed by a series of aggressive high schools, with hard work and an enthusiasm to deliver, all of the teams from Mount Carmel Catholic College were able to place in two out of three mBot driven events.

Mount Carmel entered the maximum number of teams eligible for entry which consisted of three teams with three to four students.
- The Martians → Charmaine Marquinez, Giselle Byrne and Charlotte Vakayil
-
Marechi → Alisa Thephavong, Tahlia Bell and Maria Tuyor
-
Ichobi → Eseta Malaesilia, Anora Sitthirajvongsa and Maria-Louise Baccay
These teams worked tirelessly on their projects and were able to place in all events they participated in. Congratulations to all students involved!
On 21 June, half of Year 8 embarked on an excursion to the Sydney Olympic Park to research and comprehend the usage and sustainability of water. To begin the trip, we learnt about the importance of WSUD, which is an abbreviation for water sensitive urban design. WSUD is an urban engineering design that was formulated to help slow down the process of the catchment of wastewater. WSUD allows a reduced volume of stormwater to enter waterways, which improves Sydney Olympic Park and helps reduce the water by adding drains, permeable paving and tree and drain grates in specific locations.
Another opportunity was to monitor a ponds’ water quality by conducting experiments that tested the pH, turbidity, temperature, salinity and the amount of pollution present in the lake. We also learnt about, and produced, field sketches of the water and the environment around it. We learnt about the local Aboriginal tribe, the Wann clan having six seasons in their calendar which was perfected over thousands of years based on star alignments, animals and general weather patterns. For example, Burrugin is during June and July where the weather will be cold and frosty, the Echidnas will be seeking mates, the Burringoa will be flowering, and harvesting shellfish were deemed prohibited.
Throughout the excursion, we also learnt about the history of Sydney Olympic Park and their redemption story. A building neighbouring the park was once known as the State Abattoir. The Homebush abattoir was the primary supplier of meat for domestic and overseas markets for many years before the Olympics. The structure contributed to damaging waste and carbon emissions, and their waste was disposed into the Parramatta River and contributed to regional pollution. We learnt how the government cleaned up pollution and planted several trees. Later, to sustain the natural environment, the class also observed how the Sydney Olympic Park sustains water by using recycled water to flush the toilets, treat gardens and use it for water aesthetics.
We’d like to thank the HSIE teachers - especially Ms Hills for organising this excursion and providing Year 8 this opportunity!

College Sport at Mount Carmel
Another term has come and gone and what a term that it was for Mount Carmel students in the sporting domain. We have had 11 teams compete each week in the MISA competition, our MISA Dance crew performed at the annual MISA Dance Festival last Tuesday, 2 teams in the MISA Interzone finals, 34 groups out at recreational sport each week and over 1000 students physically active each Tuesday afternoon! What an effort!
We are looking forward to continuing this positive approach to movement and sport next term. Have a happy and safe holiday and bring on term 3.
Below are some general policies that the college enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
TERM 3 SPORTS LIST
Years 8-11 have been posted on the sports notice boards by Monday. This will allow students to check their sport group and have the opportunity to discuss any potential changes in preparation for next term. NO MORE CHANGES CAN BE MADE TO SPORT GROUPS AS THE TIMETABLE HAS BEEN FINALISED.
