Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Last Sunday’s reading came from the Gospel of Luke and recalls Jesus preparing his disciples for His inevitable return. ‘See that you are dressed for action and that you have your lamps lit’. We are told, and in many ways challenged, that if we are trusting, and always ready, that God’s rewards for this will be in abundance. To be ready for his coming requires is to live as Christ commands us to today. To not defer our Christian obligations, but to accept and embrace them as a way of life.
This past week has seen us approach the finish line for this years Trial HSC Examinations. I remain so extremely impressed at the focused, measured and dedicated commitment that has been demonstrated by so many of our students over the past fortnight. I also remain particularly grateful for the many teachers who have remained back at the College to work with students in the library of an evening to support effective study and exam preparation. I anticipate the coming weeks to be full of mixed emotions as students receive results and feedback from their performances in these exams. I urge them to be pleased with their achievements but to use this feedback as a guide to further prepare them for the main HSC exams that commence at the start of Term 4.
On Thursday afternoon, I had the opportunity to address the current Year 11 cohort at the conclusion of their two day leadership program that was designed to ultimately select the Student Representative Council for 2020. I was impressed by the level of engagement and attention that was given towards this process and have no doubt that the program that was delivered has aided in the discernment process that will ultimately lead to the selection of a very deserving and successful student leadership team next year.
I take the opportunity this week to thank the parents who were in attendance at our August P&F meeting that took place on Tuesday night here at the College. I am particularly grateful to our College Curriculum Coordinator, Ms Judith Tolomeo who was also in attendance to provide our parents with an insight into the range of strategies that we employ here at the College to ensure that all students are challenged to realise their potential. For those parents who are interested in attending the next P&F meeting, our next gathering will be held in Week 8 of term, on Tuesday 10 September.
Finally this week, I remind all parents that the Term 3 pupil free day will take place on Friday 30 August. This day will give staff the opportunity to engage in professional development that will further develop our approaches towards pastoral care here at the College. I thank in advance those parents who are required to make alternative supervision arrangements so that our teachers can engage in such a worthwhile opportunity.
Ite in Veritate
Acting Principal
On Monday 12 August, 11 students travelled to the Fraternity Club in Fairy Meadow to participate in the Diocesan finals of the Mbot Coding Competition. They had qualified after clean sweeping the competition in the Northern Zone. The students were participating in two areas of the competition.
“So You Think You Can Dance” had two components. Students were required to code an Mbot to dance in time with a song of their choice. This involved skills of not only engineering but design as the students needed to decorate not only their Mbots but a dance floor. The second part of this challenge involved a mystery song revealed on the evening which all teams had 30 minutes to prepare. The Mount Carmel teams demonstrated their creativity, collaboration and problem solving skills with determination and dominated the final, winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place. First place was won by Maria Tuyor, Elisha Sailago, Alisa Thephavong and Tahlia Bell.
“The Amazing Race” required students to code an Mbot to escape from a maze which was revealed to them on the evening using coding and sensors. Once again the Mount Carmel teams excelled and this was won by the team of Charmaine Marquinez, Laura Alivio, Giselle Byrne and Charlotte Vakayil.
Congratulations also to the team of Maria - Louise Baccay, Anora Sitthirajvongsa and Eseta Malaesilia who achieved minor placing on the evening.
Year 12 2019 Academic Medallions
Young People need to aim high and to know that their community support them. Our children are our most valuable resource and, all too often, their academic achievements can be neglected. We want to encourage learning and to reward as many students as possible.
To this end, I am asking for donations towards the Year 12 Academic Medallions. The cost of each medallion is $40.00 or three for $100.00. If you wish to donate towards a particular subject, please contact Trish Mooney on 9603 3000 or email info@mcccdow.catholic.edu.au.
A case of Whooping Cough has been reported at the College. Please see the information sheet below for more information.
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on Compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the Sports Office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for Week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.

Year 7-10 Boys CCC Football Knockout
And the success continues! The last update we had on our Years 7-10 Boys CCC Football team was when they beat Edmund Rice and John Therry in the Wollongong knockout competition to gain a spot in the quarter finals. The boys played their quarter final match against Marian Catholic College Kenthurst on Tuesday 30 July at Kareela Sports Field and what a game it was!
It was a competitive game against a strong, physical Marian College team. The boys conceded two goals within the first 10 minutes of the game and it was always going to be difficult to come back from that. Despite this, all of the boys kept playing hard and supporting each other out on the field. Their coach, Mr King, had faith in his team and kept his cool on the sideline.
The tide started to turn when MCCC scored their first goal off a brilliant shot by Declan Doyle after a goalmouth scramble. The boys continued to hang in there and their patience and determination paid off. Samuel Sisounon scored MCCC’s second goal of the match off a free kick with only a few seconds on the clock, making the score 2-2 and taking the game into ‘golden goal’.
The boys rose to the occasion and didn’t shy away from the pressure that came with ‘golden goal’. They all ignored the controversy that crept into the match and remained focused, with their eyes on the prize - the win.
The winning goal was scored by Jamie Pandopolous off a free kick which deceived all defenders and the keeper from the opposing team - MCCC had achieved the win! An exciting, dramatic match where the old adage “it's not over until the final whistle” really comes into play.
Congratulations to all of the boys (team list below) and their coach Mr King. You have all worked so hard to prepare for these challenging matches and your run continues - well deserved! Thank you again to Finlay Wade and Vann English for being linesmen on the day. The boys will play their semi-final match against Marist College Eastwood on September 3rd at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood. If they get the win in this match they will play in the final on Wednesday 4th of September. We wish the boys the best of luck in their match in a few weeks time. Good luck with your preparation.
