Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Last Sunday, the Gospel at Mass (Luke 14:1-14) outlined the idea that we should do things with humility and without the thought of recognition or reward. The parable Jesus told was of the guest at a wedding who took the place of honour at the table and was then asked to move. He went on to highlight the idea that it is better to be asked to move to a better position rather than being asked to move down. It is worthwhile asking when we do things, do we do them because they are right or because they will get us recognition? I have regularly spoken to the students explaining that they have an obligation to use the talents they have been given by God, but this can be done with humility and thanksgiving. For me, these qualities were highlighted in our students during this week when our SRC for 2020 attended their Leadership day. These students espoused the way that talents can be used for the greater good of others without needing to take praise for their use. This Student Leadership Team will be announced early next week.
Once again over the past week, there have been a number of events that highlight the overall mission of the College to be a “Christ-centred community providing opportunities for excellence”. Our Year 12 students took Friday to meet in their Retreat Reconnector where they reflected on their own spiritual growth and the journey that they undertook during term 4 last year. This reconnector comes at a time when their lives are often consumed by the build-up to the HSC and is a timely opportunity to stop and breathe and calm themselves before the final examinations.
On the same day, our Year 7 students gathered in the morning to meet and listen to Mr Paul Nunnari as part of the awareness raising for the MacArthur 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer campaign that runs every year. Today’s program began at Mount Carmel where Paul spoke with the students about his journey and gave them an opportunity to ask questions. There were many valuable questions from our students around his experiences and how he overcame adversity. Next week’s newsletter will contain more information about this event.
On Monday evening, Our Music, Visual Arts, Industrial Technology and Design and Technology HSC students showed or performed their major works for this year’s HSC. This evening was well attended by family members and the major works were a credit to the students. It was a pleasurable evening seeing those things of which our HSC students are capable. Congratulations to all these students and to the staff involved who have assisted them throughout their journey.
As you may be aware, Mount Carmel is part of the Marist School’s Australia network. This network enables us to connect with other schools that share our charism and give our students opportunities that they otherwise may not have access to. The Marists are currently seeking feedback on how these links may be expanded. If you would like to comment or share your thoughts, please follow the link;
Marist Global Survey. I would encourage you to take 5 – 10 minutes to offer your feedback.
Next Tuesday evening will be the next Parents and Friends evening at the College. This week our guest speaker is Mr Kripal (Mathematics Coordinator and Numeracy coach). He will be speaking about maths and numeracy initiatives within the College this year. This evening will begin at 7pm in room I3 (near the La Valla training centre).

On the 9-11 August, I had been sponsored to represent the Rotary Club Gregory Hills Next Gen for the RYPEN Program at Youthworks, Port Hacking Conference Centres, Royal National Park. The (RYPEN) Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop "life skills", an understanding on how to set and achieve goals and to challenge personal boundaries in order to make a positive impact in our society.
The proceedings of the camp revolved around a primary focus of teamwork and collaboration. Hence, the weekend required us to progress being spread across four different teams. The activities involved required us to engage in public speaking, social awareness and group problem-solving activities. Having been given various presentations regarding mental-health, well-being and how to be a better leader, we had completed the program by presenting a showcase for the Rotarians who sponsored us to represent our respective clubs.
The experience as a whole was enriching and had broaden our horizons culturally, socially and academically. It was an honour to represent our college and the Rotary Club Gregory Hills Next Gen at such an event, and I strongly encourage others to actively engage in challenging but rewarding experiences like this. To take advantage of this opportunity, you can apply at your nearest Rotary Club.

Year 12 2019 Academic Medallions - Copy
Young People need to aim high and to know that their community support them. Our children are our most valuable resource and, all too often, their academic achievements can be neglected. We want to encourage learning and to reward as many students as possible.
To this end, I am asking for donations towards the Year 12 Academic Medallions. The cost of each medallion is $40.00 or three for $100.00. If you wish to donate towards a particular subject, please contact Trish Mooney on 9603 3000 or email info@mcccdow.catholic.edu.au.
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on Compass: Students are asked to check their Compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the Sports Office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for Week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
MC Sporting Stars - Jaden Legaspi (Year 11)
It is with great pride that I share with the MC community that Jaden Legaspi (Year 11) has recently been selected into the U16’s Australian Barbarians Rugby Union Team. Jaden has been through a rigorous selection process that has involved multiple tournaments and trials where he performed exceptionally well earning him a position in this representative team. The Australian Junior Rugby Union Championships will be held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra from the 27 September - 5 October 2019. Exciting times ahead!
As always a humble and well deserving athlete - we wish Jaden the best of luck with his involvement in this Australian team and look forward to sharing more of his recent success stories with the wider MC community. Well done Jaden!

Read LessMount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
DIOCESAN VOLLEYBALL CARNIVAL
We departed school at 7 am by bus to the Illawarra Hockey Centre in Wollongong. The whole team was filled with emotions of excitement and were determined to take out the competition. When we arrived there, our emotions of excitement and determination were now replaced with the urging eagerness to get on the court and start playing. We geared up by putting on our jerseys, playing shoes and shorts/tights. We had a quick warm-up and then played our first match against St Pats. We kept content and relaxed throughout the whole game and showed no emotions of defeat when a ball was mistakenly dropped. We used our threes and showed our sense of composure throughout the whole match. Fortunately, we won and were immensely happy, as well as amazed that our focal competition of the day had finally been beaten with straight sets of 2-0. With all this anticipation we knew as a team we had to disguise our success with humility and modesty to play the next matches against Magdalene and Corpus Christi in which we also won straight sets 2-0.
As the day went on, our keenness to win each game continued and the next match against John Therry was the key decision in what we would place within our pool. As we versed them we managed to win one set but unfortunately lost as they had taken out the other two sets of three. Even though this was a setback we were able to get back on our feet and verse St Mary’s in the semis. This game in our eyes was our best game. They had won the first set but the sense of determination pumping within our veins throughout the whole day only grew stronger and by constant collectiveness and composure and intimidating them with our comebacks of threes and combinations of sets and digs throughout the second set, we were able to win the second set. Within that game every hit, serve and spike was filled with commitment and passion to get into the Grand Final. This match was so close and by two points in the third set, we were able to triumph.
Our final match was against St Pats and through defeating them in the first round we knew as a team we could take them out again. Each set was close and we tried our best but ended the game with a loss. Overall, we came second out of ten schools and even though our goal of first place was not achieved we believe as a team we won. We are proud of this result and it is an improvement from our previous year competing at the carnival. The whole team played extremely well and had great enthusiasm for the whole day.
A huge expression of respect and acknowledgment to our coach, Ms Asuit, for leading us, boosting our confidence with motivational words and providing us with strategies that definitely advanced our playing throughout the day. Without a doubt, we were able to walk away from the event with better teamwork and communication skills as well as the ongoing sense of never giving up and striving to your full potential.
The OPEN Girls Volleyball team consisted of Jessica Arentz, Caitlin McCing, Ana Ramsay, Aaliyah Mikaele Tevaga, Mia Asuit, Shekinah Semaia, Timara Semaia, Eseta Malasilia, Charmaine Marquinez, Leilani Olaagia, Sunshine Ferreiro-Deluca, Paula Zaballero

DIOCESAN HOCKEY CARNIVAL
The annual Diocesan Hockey Championships were held at Narellan again this year and Mount Carmel had our Opens Boys and Girls teams compete. The teams, along with their coaches Ms Poulton and Mr Rees, were keen to get on the field and see what our students could do.
The girls had some ups and downs throughout the day having 1 win, a loss and a draw. The team unfortunately was plagued with injury towards the end of the carnival and this made it difficult when creating familiar combinations on the field. It was impressive to see many girls step up and play well throughout the day despite never having played competitive hockey before. The girls all enjoyed themselves and represented the college with pride.
The boys also had a successful day and it was down to a coin toss that cost them their place in the grand final match. The boys went through winning all three of their games but unfortunately it came down to the toss of a coin which unfortunately ruled them out of the finals matches. Despite this set back the boys all held their heads high and represented the college with pride and great sportsmanship.
Congratulations to both of our teams and their coaches.
Boys Team - James D’Angelo, Jordan Darnley, Vann English, Matthew Galvin, James MacGregor, Jeremiah Myatt-Kane, Khye Poulton, Elliott Stark, Finlay Wade, Blake Waugh, Blake Whitehead and Hayden Williams.

NSWCCC YEARS 7-10 FOOTBALL TEAM
On Tuesday this week our Years 7-10 Boys CCC Football Team travelled to Glenwood to play their semi-final match against Marist College Eastwood. The day started bright and early with the students and their coach Mr King leaving the College at 6:30am to ensure they had a good preparation for their match.
They arrived at the field with plenty of time to get familiar with the ground and to pump up ready for the match. After a lengthy warm up the boys were ready to take the field.
Under the guidance of Mr King and Mr Harrison the boys played exceptionally well holding the opposition out for the entire first half of football. The boys had a few good opportunities to score but the Eastwood defenders was always there to pressure them. Our boys were also a force to be reckoned with on the field never giving up and pressuring their opponents at every touch of the ball. It wasn’t until the final 5 minutes of the match where our defence lapsed for only an instant and the Eastwood team took advantage scoring a great goal making the score 1-0 the Marist College Eastwood.
All of our boys played with heart, pride and as a tight knit team - they should all be proud of how far they progressed because their MC community certainly is. Congratulations again to all of the boys for their efforts not only during the match but in the lead up to the carnival. The training sessions, trial matches and sacrifices have all been worth it. Thank you again to Mr King for sharing your football expertise with our students and for always offering up your own time to train the students before school and to travel with them their matches. Thank you also to Mr Harrison who attended on the day to assist with managerial duties. Bring on 2020!
Team List - Nathaniel Calvelo, Tobias Camilleri, William Churchin, Declan Doyle, Justin Gilbang, Sam Glinatsis, Sammy Hawa, Luke Isakka, Jamie Pandopolous, Delwyn Pereira, Harry Pullicino, Luca Rubio, Samuel Sisounon, Bailey Smith, Ryan Topolski, Luan Tu, Blake Waugh, Finlay Wade and Vann English (Linesmen).
