Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
In the Gospel last Sunday (Luke 21: 5 – 19), the disciples ask Jesus about the end of time. His response is about staying firm while all around us crumbles and about being prepared. But He also says to them “do not be frightened”. Over the past one thousand years, there have been many predictions about the ‘end of the world’. The focus should not be about being fearful of the end of the world as we know it, but more about how we are preparing for our own transition to life eternal. Jesus tells us that if we live His message and follow the truth (Ite in Veritate), we will share eternal life with Him. This makes the ‘end of the world’ more about the end of our world as we currently know it and gives us an opportunity to spend our life preparing and improving ourselves. At today’s College assembly, I spoke to the students about what we hope will be the values held by a Mount Carmel graduating student. The graphic I used is reprinted in the student diaries, however, I wonder how many of our students have read it and have reflected on what it means. If we each strive to be the best people we can be, and walk in truth, we have nothing about which to be frightened.
Last Saturday, Mrs Meharg accompanied a number of our older students to the Catechists’ Mass which was held at the Cathedral in Wollongong. Each year this mass recognises the contributions of the catechists throughout the diocese and the tremendous amount of work they do in spreading the message of Jesus Christ to those students who do not have the benefit of being in a Catholic school. On behalf of our whole community, I congratulate and thank these students for the vital work they have done in the local schools.
On Monday our Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) students spent the day at a program aimed at their attendance at the festival held in Perth in a few weeks. These students have been given an opportunity to develop their own spirituality and hopefully bring some of this energy back to Mount Carmel over the coming months. I thank Ms Toogood for her work in supporting and organising these students over the past few months.
On Tuesday, we had a low key thank you to our canteen volunteers. I thank them very much for the volunteering of their time and talents to ensure your children have access to healthy and appetising food. Without the support of these parents (current and past) and friends, it is difficult to run this service. Thank you to these volunteers and to Betty Roberts (our Canteen manager) for all your work.
Our Year 11 students participated in the annual ‘U-turn the wheel’ program held at the College. This program presents the students with some vital but basic information about safe driving and presents information from the Police Liaison Officer and Rotary volunteers who show the students the difficulties truck drivers face and the implications of poor driving habits. I thank them for their presentation and ask parents to regularly have discussion with your children about safe driving and passengering.
Tonight I will be attending the Lighting the Way Awards where staff within the diocese are recognised for long service and for excellence in contributions within our school system. This year, we have Mrs Melina Trimarchi being recognised for all her work in support of our Food Technology and Hospitality staff and students. Mrs Trimarchi regularly goes above and beyond her duties to ensure the students are well cared for. Congratulations to Mrs Trimarchi and to Mrs Marks for her thoughtfulness and work in nominating Mrs Trimarchi.
Once again a reminder that as we move toward the end of the year, our finance office is looking to finalise the budgets and invoices for 2019. I would ask that any parents who have outstanding school fees, look to complete their payments over the next few weeks so that we can ensure our commitments are met before the end of the year. As always, if there are any difficulties meeting these fees, I ask that you contact our finance office and arrange a discussion with the College. Thank you again for your ongoing support.
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal

We look forward to you joining us.
Mrs Lillis
Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.

TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the College’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (yrs 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Advisor for clarification.
ANNUAL MCCC SPORTS AWARDS - Tuesday 10 December 2019 (Week 9)
The end of the College year is fast approaching and I want to take this opportunity to advertise the Annual MCCC Sports Awards that will be taking place on Tuesday 10 December 2019. These awards will allow the College community to celebrate the sporting success of our students across a variety of contexts; MISA teams and Most Valued Players, Recreational Sport participants, CCC teams, Diocesan medallion winners and College carnival Age Champions. There will be special sporting guests joining us for the afternoon as well as presentations to relive the ups and downs of the college carnivals and sport at MCCC this year.
Parents / guardians are welcome to join us for the afternoon. Students receiving major awards (Age Champions and CCC recognition) will be notified via mail in the coming weeks. All other award winners will be notified at school and asked to inform parents. We hope to see you there to celebrate the 2019 sporting successes.
** Please note that the 2019 Sportsperson of the Year for each year level will be presented on the day of our major awards ceremony in week 10.
Mrs Tara Pontin (College Sport Coordinator)
Read LessMount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the College year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
CDF Sports Awards Evening - Friday 15 November 2019
On Friday last week, seven Mount Carmel Catholic College students were congratulated on their 2019 sporting success at the 23rd Annual CDF Sports Awards. Each of our award winners received a Secondary Sports Council Medallion for their selection into a CCC or All Schools team this year. It was a great night that recognises the hard work, commitment and sacrifices that many of our Diocesan school students make in order to perform at their best in their chosen sport.
I would like to take the time to again congratulate the following students on receiving their Secondary Sports Council Medallion:
Blake Bolwell (Yr 7) - Cross Country
Connor Cameron (Yr 11) - Softball
Matthew Galvin (Yr 9) - Cross Country
Monique Jakovljevic (Yr 8) - Cross Country
Jaden Legaspi (Yr 11) - Rugby Union
Blake Waugh (Yr 9) - Cross Country
Jaimie-Louise Zaballero (Yr 12) - Softball
Thank you to our 2020 College Sport Captains Jayden Brunt and Marlou Mistula for their attendance on the evening and for reading athlete citations as part of the ceremony.
**These students will be acknowledged in front of our college community at our end of year sports awards in week 9.
On the evening they also announce the winner of the Vince Villa trophy for the Champion Secondary School. Vince Villa worked in Catholic Education as a Secondary Principal and Senior Secondary Consultant. His commitments and organisational skills, his sense of justice and his mischievous sense of humour reflected his great faith and zest for life. Vince was an integral part of the development of both New South Wales and Wollongong Secondary Catholic School Sport. He had a passion for sport and he provided solid pathways for all students in our Diocese.
This year MCCC finished 3rd overall in the race for the Vince Villa Trophy. An enormous effort by the students and staff at the college. Congratulations to all of those students who represented the college at a Diocesan event, whether it was as part of a team or to throw a single discus at the Athletics carnival - every contribution counts. Thank you to all of the teachers who coached and mentored teams throughout the year. Your help and work ethic is greatly appreciated and valued. Well done MCCC!

Summer Safety Tip
With the summer holidays fast approaching, there will be the inclusion of a ‘Summer Safety Tip’ in the newsletter each week. These tips will act as a reminder for our students and the wider community to look after themselves and their friends / family in the summer months.
Tip #2 - ‘Beat the Heat’
In this extreme heat it is important to recognise the warning signs of sun stroke, dehydration and other heat related illnesses. Exercising a few simple actions will keep you safe in the warmer weather and ensure your body stays hydrated and healthy.
