Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
As a nation this Sunday we celebrate and recognise the importance of all mothers on Mother’s Day. Whilst this day is a secular celebration, our charisms allow us to draw on its specific and clear relevance and importance to our own community of Mount Carmel Catholic College. Our Patron being Mary, the Mother of God, epitomises all that is great about mothers and the selfless way they care for their families. Our link to Marist (or Maryists as they were originally referred to) and to the Carmelites (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) all have a direct and deep affection and respect for Mary our good mother. In travelling ‘in the way of Mary’ (one of the Marist Characteristics) we aim to follow her strength of commitment and compassion as well as a love of others. In these difficult times, we share a prayer for the safety of our mothers and thanks for all that they do. I wish all mothers all the best for this Sunday and ask you keep those who are physically with us or with us in spirit, to remain in your prayers.
In the newsletter last week, I outlined the transition of the return of students to face to face teaching. For weeks 3 & 4, the main delivery of lessons will continue to be online for Years 7 – 11 however, students will have the opportunity to access staff on certain days by attending the College. The specific return days were included in the newsletter last week and two other letters that were sent to parents. A summary is again included below:

Please understand that at the time of distribution of this newsletter, these plans are valid for weeks 3 & 4 of this term. As we receive further advice regarding students’ possible further return to school, our community will be advised.
When students return from Monday, the expectation is that they will attend in their normal full winter uniform. Due to the fact that there will not be any sport and no PDHPE Practical classes, there is no reason for students to wear their sport uniform to school in weeks 3 or 4. We are aware that some students may have experienced difficulty in accessing the uniform shop so parents are asked to supply a letter explaining this where appropriate. Staff will be lenient on students who have been unable to acquire the full uniform. In the meantime, students who do not have the full winter uniform are asked to wear items from the summer uniform with those winter items that they already have. Students are reminded of the expectations around hair, makeup and jewellery.
On Friday, Mr Cloran and myself installed 20 new hand sanitising stations around the College. Students are reminded of good hygiene and handwashing requirements and encouraged to bring bottles for water as bubblers will not be available for use.
A reminder that all students are required to register their attendance each day. For those who are physically at school, this will be completed in their Pastoral Class each morning. For those who are working remotely, the current process of completing the Google form is expected. This Google sign-in is also necessary each Friday as whilst there are no official lessons, it is still considered a standard school day.
As previously advised, we have made the decision to swap our Tuesday and Friday timetables for the next two weeks. This is to provide students with maximum engagement on the days that they are at school. Please be aware that this will impact the finishing times on both days. This means that for the next two Tuesdays (May12 & 19), the finish time of school will be 3:15 and for the two Fridays (May 15 & 22) the finish time will be 2:45. Normal buses will run on all days.
On our original calendar, we had planned for our annual G Day (Grandparents, Godparents and Good Friends) celebrations for the upcoming week. Under our current conditions, this can obviously not continue in its normal format. It is appropriate however, for us to take the opportunity to reflect on the value and love of those who would normally join us for G Day and remember to say thank you for their love and friendship. Thank you to all our Grandparents, God parents and Good friends.
Once again a reminder that our scheduled Parents and Friends’ meetings have been cancelled for term 2. I am extremely grateful for the regular parents who attend these and offer advice and encouragement.
Our Year 7, 2021 interviews are currently taking place. Thank you to the many staff who are conducting these in difficult circumstances and to the flexibility of our possible future parents and students.
As a result of Coronavirus restrictions, public masses have been cancelled around the country Bishop Brian Mascord has launched a YouTube channel where the faithful can watch him celebrate mass with us, and on our behalf. The link to this mass is here. Please log into this site each weekend and join Bishop Brian online for the celebration of the Eucharist.
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal
Lord God,
through your creative power you give birth to all
and love all as a mother loves her child.
Bless these women who are mothers.
When they worry for their child,
hold them in your care.
When they work to provide a home for their child,
stand beside them.
If they mourn for their child,
hold them in your love.
When the joy of their child overtakes them,
laugh with them.
Bless them, and may they each be a living symbol of your love;
a symbol to their children and all who they encounter.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord.
CEDoW Spiritual Formation Programs
As previously advised, all CEDoW Spiritual Formation Programs have been suspended until further notice.
In response to this, a significant initiative has been developed for staff and parents to support their ongoing personal spiritual formation. It is a new podcast series entitled ‘Ripples: Inspired Voices, Treasured Stillness’.
Ripples seeks to offer a space where people can draw on the wisdom of a series of guest speakers and can experience some treasured stillness through meditation. On Tuesday of each week a new Episode and Meditation will be offered. Practices like these create a ripple effect. They have the potential to impact the way we respond to family, friends, colleagues, to others in our world, to creation and to our loving God.
The Ripples Podcast is now available on the Continuity of Faith and Learning website, on Podbean. and Apple Podcast.
We hope that you enjoy the program and that it provides a formative experience for you.
I understand that it is with a sense of anticipation that we prepare to commence our gradual return to classes over the next week and, hopefully, the return to our regular lessons and routines in the not too distant future. The past 6 weeks have provided many challenges for parents, staff and students as we have each adapted to a new mode of online education. I once again thank all members of our community for their support in dealing with these challenges and for your ongoing support in the weeks and months ahead.
As has been outlined by Mr Lo Cascio, while the online delivery of lesson activities will continue for the immediate future, it is hoped that the invitation for students to return to the College on specific days from next week will serve as a gradual and important reintroduction to school routine, the classroom environment and, of course, the social interactions that many students have missed in recent weeks. Notwithstanding this, I also take the opportunity to stress the importance of following current government advice with regards to keeping students at home if they are experiencing even the slightest evidence of flu-like symptoms. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the College will be adopting a range of protocols to continue supporting the health and wellbeing of all members of our community, however, keeping students who may be unwell from attending is one very practical way that families can support these efforts.
Given the time that has passed since most students were onsite at the College, I take the opportunity to reinforce the messages that have been communicated to students over the past week by Mr Huntly and the respective Year Coordinators. While we understand that some families have had difficulties obtaining aspects of the winter uniform over the past few weeks, College expectations with regards to haircuts, shaving, jewellery, mobile phones and all behavioural expectations will recommence from Monday. Given the time that we have had away in recent weeks, it is everyone's preference that our energy is directed towards teaching and learning as opposed to these other issues that can detract from our core purpose. I ask all parents and students to be familiar with our expectations as outlined in the College diary and support the College in adhering to them.
Finally, I ask all parents and carers to be aware that while we have often encouraged students and families to refer to the College diary as a reference point for significant College events such as excursions, assemblies and liturgical celebrations, as we commence our return to onsite learning, it is important to note that restrictions still exist in relation to large gatherings and non-essential travel. To this end, a large number of events that have previously been published have now been cancelled or postponed. For this reason, I would ask students and parents to refer to the College calendar on Compass as a more reliable source of information regarding College events.
Wishing all the mothers in our community a happy Mother's Day and I look forward to having students return to the College from Monday.
Best wishes,
David Cloran
Assistant Principal
Fifth Sunday of Easter
First Reading Acts 6:1 - 7 Stephen is chosen as the first deacon
Second Reading 1Peter 2:4- 9 Jesus, a living cornerstone
Gospel John 14:1 - 12 Jesus the way, truth, and life.
Gospel Reflection
The gospel readings for this week and next week shift the focus away from the resurrection and begin to set us up for the departure of Jesus from the earth – the Ascension – and the sending of the Holy Spirit – the Pentecost event.
Today’s gospel passage comes from the very long Last Supper discourse in the gospel of John. When Jesus speaks about ‘going away’ for a time it could be interpreted as the period of his death and rising that are about to occur in the chronology of the story. However, the gospel of John is written a very long time after the death of Jesus; perhaps as much as 70 years after Jesus. Given this period of time between the events and the writing, we know that the writer was also referring to this longer time of Jesus ‘going away’. By the time of the writing of this gospel the early Christians were starting to come to terms with the fact that Jesus probably wasn’t going to return in their lifetime. They had seen the devastating destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Romans in 70CE which they thought had signalled the end of all time. However, here they were, still alive and still no sign of Jesus’ return.
The theme of being present and being absent is very strong in this gospel. The discussion about Jesus and the Father being one is part of this theme. Jesus is God present in the world. God has come to dwell among the people. When Jesus speaks of preparing rooms in the Father’s house, it is a reference to preparing the disciples to ‘live’ in God; to dwell in God just as God has dwelt in the people.
Historical Context – It is for the best…
At the time of this gospel’s writing, some 70 years after the events it describes, amazing things have taken place in the early Christian community. Rather than everything falling apart with the death of Jesus, the message of Jesus has spread further than he himself could ever have accomplished. It is the departure of Jesus from their midst and the sending of the Spirit that really prompts the disciples to act on what they had experienced while Jesus lived among them. The gospel writer has Jesus saying that he has to go away so that the disciples can reach their potential.
Scriptural context – The gospel of John
The gospel of John is very different from the other three ‘synoptic’ gospels. The other three have a very narrative style and can be seen together as different recounts of the same events. Whilst the gospel of John also has some beautifully narrated stories, it is better known as a more theologically reflective piece of writing. It assumes that the readers of this gospel are already familiar with one or more of the others, so it doesn’t need to tell the story again. Rather, it presents a sweeping image of God, through Jesus, reaching out, in, through, and with love to the people.
Living the Gospel – The Way, the Truth and the Life
When Thomas asks, ‘we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answers by saying, ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.’ The reader of the gospel has known this truth all along from the opening line of the gospel, ‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.’ Our aim, as Christian people, is to be one with God, not only by sharing in the resurrection but also in the way we live. Jesus makes clear that the way to be with God is by following his example.
Questions for Adolescents
Q. What is it that Jesus wants the disciples to trust in God about?
Q. What do we learn about the disciples from the questions asked by Thomas and Philip?
Q. What truth does Jesus make clear to the disciples about himself and the Father?
Q. What message can young people today take from this gospel passage?
Questions for Adults
Q. Why does this passage work as both a Last Supper speech and a pre-Ascension discourse?
Q. What does the image of the many rooms in the Father’s house seek to convey?
Q. How might Jesus have felt in reaction to the disciples' questions?
Q. Why does Jesus need to return to the Father for the disciples to live out their potential?

We develop a way of being, loving, and doing.
We seek to establish positive relationships with all members of the community, founded on love, which creates a climate for learning in an educational setting, for passing on values, and for personal growth.
We deepen our experience of the loving presence of God within others and ourselves.
This presence of God is a profound experience of being personally loved by God, and the conviction that He is close to us in our daily human experiences.
From the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Good afternoon everyone,
I hope that the week has been progressing well for you. As you were notified by Mr Locascio last Friday (by email and in the newsletter), we are beginning a transition that, we hope, will culminate in a return to full time schooling sometime in the near future. At this stage, the following Attendance Roster is in place commencing next Monday, May 11.
Week 3 Year Group Attendance Roster
Students in Years 7 to 11 are required to attend school on their rostered days only. During this time, students will attend their scheduled lessons. Any unscheduled students who attend school will attend their normal timetabled classes.

Hygiene
A number of initiatives will be in place for the changes next week. These will include access for all staff and students to hand sanitiser, which will be located in a number of locations around the College campus.
Uniform and Grooming
Apart from attendance and hygiene, I would also like to take this opportunity to remind families and students about the uniform change to winter uniform, as well as our ongoing expectations regarding uniform and grooming. If you are unsure, please click onto the following link MCCC Uniform and Grooming Expectations.
Again, your support and patience throughout this challenging time has been greatly appreciated. As we slowly return to some form of “normality” it is important that our routines and expectations whilst on site are in line with usual expectations as a means of providing a smooth transition back to face to face learning.

Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Learning and Teaching at the College
Learning & Teaching: Week 3-4
Beginning Monday 11 May, Year 12 students will be attending the College each day for face to face lessons, and the remainder of students in Year 7-11 will attend based on the format as outlined and shared already by Mr Lo Cascio. Tuesday has been nominated as a "non-teaching" day (except for Year 12 students), and this day will occur on Friday. This day will enable staff to prepare lessons for the following week.
LATEST ADVICE FROM NESA (5 MAY)
Higher School Certificate
The Higher School Certificate (HSC) exams are going ahead in 2020. NESA will release the HSC written exam timetable by 15 May (Week 3, Term 2). Students will receive their HSC results in mid-December. Education authorities are working together to ensure a pathway to university for Year 12 students.
Advice to students
These tips will help you, whatever further changes may be made to the HSC:
- Focus on right now
- Keep learning, keep submitting your assessments and listen to your teachers.
- Look after yourself, whether you are at school or at home.
- Reach out to family, friends and your teachers if you need to.
- Go to UAC COVID-19 updates for information about entering university in 2021.
School-based HSC assessment
Schools must follow social distancing requirements when planning or undertaking school-based assessment tasks. NESA has given principals and system authorities the power to determine the number, type and weighting of tasks for HSC and Year 11 school-based assessment.
This includes making determinations about all mandated tasks that are internally assessed in the following courses:
- Ancient History
- Community and Family Studies
- Design and Technology
- English (English Studies, English Standard, English Advanced, English EAL/D, English Extension 1 and English Extension 2)
- Geography
- History Extension
- Mathematics: Mathematics Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2
- Modern History
- Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science, Investigating Science – depth studies, and Science Extension)
NESA’s principles of assessment continue to apply. Wherever possible, school-based assessment should continue to be:
- based on a range of syllabus outcomes
- based on measures made throughout the HSC course
- informed by the components identified in the assessment and reporting documents for each of the syllabuses
- inclusive of and accessible for all students.
Authenticity of student work
Schools are responsible for taking measures to ensure tasks submitted online are the student’s own work. Remind students of their obligation to maintain honesty and integrity when:
- completing assessment tasks, exams and submitted works
- acknowledging any part of work that was written, created or developed by someone else, such as any material from other sources and work undertaken by others.
Language oral exams
Students should continue studying for the language oral exams and completing school-based assessments.
Practical exams
The due dates have been extended and teachers will provide the final mark for the following components of the 2020 HSC practical exams:
- Design and Technology: Major Design Project (Product)
- Industrial Technology: Major Project (Product)
- Visual Arts: Body of Work.
Detailed advice about practical examinations is now available.

Curriculum Coordinator
Year 11 Parent / Teacher / Student Interviews
The Year 11 PTS interviews were scheduled for Wednesday 27 May 2020 (week 5), to align with the distribution of the Year 11 Semester One Academic Report. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, government policy, and social distancing requirements, these PTS interviews will not be going ahead as scheduled. However, the Year 11 Semester One Academic Reports will be made available for parents to access through the College COMPASS portal as planned.
As no face to face interviews will take place during week 5, opportunities for parents to speak with individual subject teachers over the phone will be made available and details of how this will occur will be shared with parents in the coming weeks.
Kind regards,
Mrs Theresa Moore
Year 11 Pastoral Care Coordinator
In light of COVID-19 all sport at the College has either been cancelled or suspended until further notice. This includes College recreational sport, MISA, Diocesan, CCC, All Schools and School Sport Australia events. More specific information will be communicated to everyone as the current situation continues to develop.
As communicated in an earlier edition of the newsletter, the following College sporting events have been cancelled:
- College Athletics Carnival
- College Cross Country Carnival
- Marist Basketball
- Marist Netball
- Diocesan Rugby League selection trials
- Diocesan Boys & Girls Football (U13’s and Yrs 7-9 / Yrs 7-10 Pathway)
- Term 2 MISA competition
- Diocesan Boys & Girls Football (Opens)
- Diocesan Cross Country carnival
- Diocesan Boys & Girls Volleyball carnival
- Diocesan Boys & Girls Hockey carnival
You would now notice that the Diocesan Volleyball and Hockey carnivals have both been added to the ‘cancelled’ list. This decision was made in the break and communicated to all sports coordinators at a zoom meeting earlier this week.
What does ‘remote’ College sport look like at Mount Carmel in Term 2 (at this stage)?
Planning has taken place at both a College and Diocesan level to ensure that our students are given valuable and safe options to not only be physically active, but to also engage in meaningful sport opportunities.
Strategies that will have been implemented at the beginning of Term 2 include (but are not limited to):
- Google classroom pages (Stage 4, Stage 5 and Stage 6) that students will join giving them access to a ‘Sports Hub - Resource Centre’. This platform will offer students various opportunities that will allow them to consider and invest time into their own health (and potentially the health of those at home). The sites are broken into sport, fitness / exercise, fun and the chill, out zone offering students a variety of options to meet their physical activity and health needs.
Sport Site Links can only be accessed via the students google suite as they have all been given the appropriate permissions to ensure online safety and appropriate use. Links are located below:

- College sport challenges that encourage movement, healthy competition, house spirit and fun. For example, trick shot challenges, March in May initiative etc.
So do you want to take on the 'MCCC March in May' challenge?
'MCCC March in May' (Stage 4, 5 and 6 categories)
With all of the COVID-19 restrictions we have all had to adjust the way we stay physically active. Studies have shown that walking has become one of the most popular physical activities during this time. There are so many positive outcomes to walking only 30 minutes each day.
All you need to do is:
- Register via the Google form on your Sport Site.
- Walk a minimum of 10,000 steps each day.
- Get proof that you have completed this step goal (take a photo of your Fit Bit screen, wear a pedometer, use an app on your phone that tracks your steps) and save your photos in a folder on your Google drive.
- Share your photo folder with Mrs Pontin (pontint01@dow.catholic.edu.au).
IT IS THAT SIMPLE!
Each time you reach your 10,000 step goal 20 points are awarded to your house tally. The house with the most points at the end of May will be our 2020 'MCCC March in May' champions!
If you require more information, please contact Mrs Pontin via email pontint01@dow.catholic.edu.au).
Good luck and happy walking!
NB: A reminder to please ask for permission from a parent / carer before going for a walk and ensure you are walking on a designated pedestrian pathway (not the road).
Thank you to Mrs Marks for your fab suggestion :)
What is likely to follow in the coming weeks:
- Physical activity classes (yoga, pilates, dance, Zumba etc) facilitated by external instructors that will be hosted via the Zoom platform.
- More points based activities that will contribute to ‘House Cup’ tallies.
- Staff vs Students challenges that will be uploaded to the ‘Sports Hub - Resource Centres’.
- Structured training sessions run via the zoom app and other recording platforms.
These strategies will continue to evolve throughout the coming weeks (as does the COVID-19 situation) and will be advertised to all students and parents / guardians.
Some exciting and ‘different’ sporting opportunities for you to get involved in!
TIPS TO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF DURING THESE UNUSUAL TIMES
As we are all very aware, these past 5-6 weeks have been extremely exhausting - physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and socially. We have constantly been challenged with the many spontaneous changes and decisions that have been made regarding the health and safety of our community in light of the COVID-19 situation.
Below are a few simple tips to keep yourself, and your loved ones, healthy, safe and happy during the Easter break.
TIP #1 - Follow the simple health advice to protect yourself and those around you.
TIP #2 - Put some time aside to be mindful and present.
TIP #3 - Incorporate some physical activity into each day.
NB: Don’t forget to remember our social distancing rules.
TIP #4 - Stay connected with family and friends.
NB: Don’t forget to remember our social distancing rules.
