Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
The responsorial psalm (Ps 24:4) from this Sunday begins with the verse:
Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:
For you are God my saviour.
As we finish term 3, we say farewell to our Year 12 students. Each year at graduation, I remind the students of what it means to be a graduand of Mount Carmel Catholic College. I emphasise the four areas of importance which revolve around faith, integrity, learning and community and I conclude my speech (and every newsletter) with the phrase Ite Inveritate – walk in truth. The psalm this week includes the phrase; “Make me walk in truth”. It is prefaced and followed by the values that we use for our graduating students. The ideals that we aim for when a student enters Year 7 at the start of their journey. To walk in the way of Jesus and to learn God’s ways. It is beneficial to remind ourselves of these goals regularly through our journey.
On Wednesday evening we held our Year 12, 2020 farewell ceremony. Unfortunately, under current COVID directives, we were unable to hold a graduation in its usual form or with parents or guests in attendance. It was decided in consultation with some parents and students to run an evening event which was live streamed. The purpose of this was to enable a majority of parents and family members to watch this live without the need to take time off work or school. After a significant amount of planning and preparation from our teaching, support and technical staff, we were able to deliver a first class live stream of a wonderful event. At one point in the evening, we had over 400 devices logged in watching and since then have had over 2200 views. This has been a testament to the professional way that the event was run and the ease with which it was accessed by parents. A huge thank you to all staff involved in this and to the students who attended with the highest levels of involvement possible in the circumstances. A huge congratulations to all students on receiving their portfolios and especially to our major award winners. These are included a little further on in this newsletter.
On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of announcing our student leadership team for 2021. The SRC underwent an intense leadership day and from this, students were allocated to portfolios of responsibility. Our student College Leaders for 2021 are:
College Captains | Laura Alivio and Jaiden Valencia |
Vice Captains | Noah Stewart and Maureen Abdelnour |
Spirituality | Maureen Abdelnour and Philip Fifita |
Sport | Tristan Ball and Annabelle Peeters |
Social Justice and Environment | Zoya Huang and Nathaniel Cavello |
Hospitality and Cultural | Braiden Quinn and Shanaya Sarkari |
Academic | Tiana Kostic and Noah Stewart |
Congratulations to each of these students.
In the lead up to the HSC we have been informed that Hiruni Peirera has been nominated for Encore. This is the performance showcase of the best students from the Music Higher School Certificate candidates. It is a great honour to be nominated and we are very proud of Hiruni especially given the difficulties of studying in 2020. We hope that this will be the first of many honours for our HSC students.
Over the past few months, Bishop Brian had been celebrating Sunday Mass and livestreaming it. These Masses each Sunday and can be accessed here.
Finally, this term has been draining on many within our community as a result of the extra demands from COVID directives. I encourage all students and staff to take the opportunity to relax and rejuvenate over the next two weeks. Within this, I also encourage students to give your parents a break by helping out where you can so they might also have a chance at rejuvenation.
Please have a happy and safe term 3 break.
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal
At the end of what has been an incredibly busy term, I take the opportunity to thank the parents and friends of the College for the support that has been provided over the past 10 weeks, particularly in response to the COVID19 measures that have been constantly evolving throughout the term. I am conscious that many of these requirements have placed pressures on families and added increased responsibilities at all levels, however, to this point they have been effective in ensuring that we maintain a healthy and safe College environment which is the ultimate intention of every action that we take.
As has been communicated previously, the measures and restrictions that are placed on schools at present were always intended to be implemented for all of Term 3, with a plan to review these for Term 4. It is likely that any change to these requirements will be communicated to schools by NSW Health and the Catholic Education Office early in Term 4 and, for this reason, unless any announcements are made over the course of the upcoming pupil vacation period, we will be continuing the current arrangements into the first days of Term 4. Once the new measures are confirmed, events such as incursions, excursions and assemblies will be organised and communicated as appropriate. As always, I thank all families for their continued flexibility, understanding and support.
I also take the opportunity to wish our students a very happy, safe and relaxing holiday period as we move off for a well-deserved break. I especially acknowledge our Year 12 students who will be spending this time fine-tuning their preparations for the upcoming HSC and to Year 11 who having now completed their Preliminary Course, will now prepare to begin the term as our new Year 12 cohort.

From the Pastoral Care and Wellbeing Coordinator
Good afternoon everyone,
Our final Pastoral Care lesson earlier today allowed students of Years 7-11 to watch a recording of our College Captains farewell speeches that took place on Wednesday night at the Farewell Assembly. Both Emma and Jaden spoke passionately about the Mount Carmel Community and the role that families, peers and staff have played in their journey throughout the past 6 years. They, along with the other members of the Student Representative Council and their fellow HSC classmates, have ensured that the conclusion to what has been a difficult year was done so in a very respectful and mature fashion. We congratulate Emma and Jaden on their presentation and thank them for their insights into what it means to be a student of Mount Carmel Catholic College and how their actions have reflected these words as role models for our college.
On behalf of each of the respective Pastoral Care teams, a huge thanks to all parents and carers for your support throughout what has again been an exciting and at times, challenging term. We hope that all families enjoy the break and that students take the opportunity to relax and refresh as we set ourselves for Term Four. A reminder that summer uniforms are to be worn next term and that caps will be compulsory in areas that do not have adequate cover.

As an unusual term draws to a close I would like to take this opportunity to immensely thank both staff and students for their continued flexibility and adaptability throughout Term 3. This term bought many disappointments and challenges within the sporting scene with the cancellation of many events and restrictions making it very challenging to resume our intended sport schedule.
For the first time in many months, this week we received some positive developments on the school sport and physical activity front which will certainly add scope to the local delivery of sport and physical activity moving forward into Term 4. The eased restrictions include:
Sport and Physical Activity
- Contact sports are permitted in Term 4
- Inter-school sports are permitted, with no restrictions on schools travelling outside their local community, however CEDoW-organised sport events remain cancelled in weeks 1 and 2
- The number of participants in attendance at inter-school sport events must be limited to external venue restrictions (on person per 4sqm to a maximum of 500 people, including staff)
- Students must remain within their relevant cohort (class, year group or stage) to limit the mixing of students between cohort groups
- External providers essential to the delivery of the sport and physical activity are permitted
- The use of external venues and facilities (including sporting groups, pools, recreational facilities and community facilities) where the school has exclusive use are permitted in line with venue protocols and COVID safety plans.
- Bus travel to venues is permitted with COVID and hygiene protocols
It is important to note that with eased restrictions we will still be seeking COVID safety and risk plans from venues and providers, cleaning equipment before and after activities and encouraging students to utilise the hand-sanitiser stations found around the College both before and after activity. Students are to continue respecting social distancing between themselves and adults (teachers / instructors that support the College’s sport program).
Term 4 MISA Sport Cancelled
Term 4 MISA Sport remains cancelled.
Physical Activity Guidelines
Sport is an opportunity for students to participate in physical activities through a range of contexts. Participation in physical activity is fundamental to the acquisition of movement skills. Having the opportunity to move and be active is an absolute privilege along with providing an opportunity for students to accumulate physical activity minutes daily. Please see the Australian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Young People (5 to 17 years) below and consider strategies that could be implement to meet and/or exceed the guidelines.

Non-Participation
Students are reminded that College Sport is a compulsory requirement of enrolment at Mount Carmel Catholic College.
- If a student is unable to participate in sport on any given Tuesday they must provide a note signed by their parent/guardian to the Sports Coordinator at recess on the day that they cannot participate.
