Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Last Sunday’s Gospel reading recalled Jesus addressing his disciples shortly after the Last Supper and issuing them with “a new commandment. Love one another; just as I have loved you. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples” (Jn 13:33-34). This commandment strikes right to the core of true Christian discipleship - a genuine love of God and a genuine love of neighbour. The ways in which we can live out this commandment are many and varied, however, one needn’t look beyond our own model of Christian discipleship in St Marcellin Champagnat, as one to aspire towards. A man who, back in 1816, responded to a call from God to establish a community of Brothers that would take the message of Christ’s love to the poor and marginalised, first through Europe, and eventually across the world.
In the coming weeks, Marist schools and communities will join in spirit across the globe to celebrate the Feast of Marcellin Champagnat. Here at Mount Carmel, we will come together for a Eucharistic celebration on the morning of Friday 7 June at 10am in the Champagnat Centre. This will be immediately followed by the presentation of the 2019 Mount Carmel Champagnat Day awards. I take the opportunity to invite all parents and friends of the College to this significant feast day and to join us for light refreshments following the Mass and awards ceremony.
It was a great pleasure to host close to 100 visitors to the College this week for our annual Year 7 G-Day celebration. Students were invited to bring along a Grandparent, Godparent or Good friend to spend the morning with them, participate in a liturgy, attend a range of practical classes and to enjoy a special morning tea, prepared by our talented Year 7 students. I am grateful to all our visitors for joining us on Monday and to Mr Huntly, Miss Donellan and Mr Powell for all their work in preparation of such an enjoyable morning.
The busy nature of Term 2 continues next week with two major events taking place. I remind all parents of Year 11 students that this coming Wednesday night is our Year 11 Parent/Teacher/Student interview evening. These interviews provide a crucial opportunity for students and parents to sit down together and discuss the progress of each student to this point in their Preliminary course. I urge all parents and students to avail themselves of this opportunity and to take on board and respond to the advice they receive from their teachers.
The second major event taking place this week will see house pride on the line at the annual College athletics carnival which will be held at Campbelltown Stadium this coming Friday. As always, parents are invited to join us for what promises to be yet another enjoyable, community-building day.
Ite in Veritate
Mr David Cloran
Acting Principal
Monday 20 May saw Mount Carmel Catholic College celebrate G Day (Grandparents, Godparents or Good Friends) for Year 7 students. Around 90 guests attended to participate in a Liturgy, which reflected upon the important role that “G” people play in our lives. Following the Liturgy, guests attended a range of Year Seven lessons, that were action-packed with visible learning activities such as Sewing, Folio work, Computer Design, Kahoot, Cricket, Team Challenge Activities, Biblical Exegesis and Scone Cooking.
Year 7 students, guests and staff then enjoyed a sumptuous morning tea that was provided by the College Canteen and Hospitality staff, as well as the Year 7's who cooked scones earlier in the morning. The event was an outstanding success, which was the result of a collaborative effort from a range of Mount Carmel staff who prepared and presented the Liturgy, Year 7 students who participated in readings, prayers and reflections throughout the Liturgy and Year 10 Student Leaders who acted as tour guides for the lesson visits.
On behalf of Year 7 staff and students, I thank everyone involved in the preparation and planning of the morning, the magnificent contribution of out Years 7 and 10 students for their involvement and assistance and to our guests, who again displayed what a supportive community we have at Mount Carmel.

Year 7 Coordinator
Consent Form - Student Images/Work
As previously requested, we ask all Parents/Guardians to complete and return the Consent Form for use of Student Images/Work. This can now be downloaded from the Forms and Documents attachments on the lefthand side of the Newsletter. This is a requirement from the Catholic Education Office and I thank those families who have already returned the relevant form.
As we enter week 5, let us be reminded about the other characteristics - family spirit, simplicity, love of work, presence. The final Marist characteristic is in the Way of Mary.
What does this mean to each of us?
- Mary is the perfect model of the Marist educator.
- Openness to the action and will of God - like Mary of the Annunciation
- Going out, as a bearer of Good News - like Mary of the Visitation
- Bringing God-life to birth - like Mary of Bethlehem
- Introducing Jesus to people - like Mary of Cana
- Sitting with the suffering face of Jesus in love and faithfulness - like Mary of Calvary
- Forming community and sowing hope - like Mary of Pentecost
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalms 16:11

Religious Education Coordinator
Due to the amazing support of the Mount Carmel community with our Lids for Limbs initiative, we are now becoming a permanent collection point for Envision Hands, so please keep collecting and spreading the word. The number of lids being brought in by students, parents and teachers is phenomenal and greatly appreciated.
The photo below is what we have collected in the last 2 weeks.
Please also try and find the time to watch this short clip as it shows what we are achieving as well as protecting the environment by keeping the lids out of landfill. Thank you all again for your ongoing support.
We are again participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn promotion and would appreciate your support until the 25 June 2019.
Stickers can be forwarded to the Front Office.
College Sport at Mount Carmel
Below are some general policies that the college enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your compass page. Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the sports office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply a note to the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (yrs 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
COLLEGE CARNIVAL TRAINING - CROSS COUNTRY & ATHLETICS
This year our vision and motto for college sport is ‘MC Teamwork Makes the PB Dream Work’. To get one step closer to reaching our goal of improving our Diocesan carnival results we are offering students the opportunity to partake in carnival training during sport time on a Tuesday afternoon.
Students can sign up for Carnival Training outside the sports office. Staff members will take students through a range of training exercises and run a organised program to improve student cardiovascular endurance and fitness as well as discuss running technique, race plans and other important considerations for achieving good results on the cross country and athletics track. Please see the schedule below:
- Term 2 - Cross Country / Athletics Training
- Term 3 - Athletics Training
Mount Carmel Catholic College vs St Gregory’s Catholic College - Wednesday 7th August 2019
The MCCC Opens Rugby League team along with coaches Mr Huntly and Mr Flannery all displayed great Marist spirit when they offered to verse the St Gregory’s College Rugby League team in preparation for an upcoming game. The boys all played with great spirit and represented the college brilliantly.
There were some talented players on the field for both teams so the quality of the game was second to none. Because of this it was no surprise to see the crowd that gathered consisting of former students, parents and the wider community. Thank you to Mr Teuma for running water for the boys and to Ms Miller and Mrs Abra for assisting with pack up. Well done to all those involved and congratulations to St Gregs on the win. Good luck in your next game.
Mrs Tara Pontin (College Sport Coordinator)

Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
DIOCESAN NETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Wednesday the 31st of July Mount Carmel sent six netball teams down to Wollongong to compete in the annual Diocesan Netball Championships. MCCC has many talented netballers amongst various grades at the college so we were hoping for a successful day on the court.
Our Year 7-8 teams, coached by Ms Bowen had a phenomenal day. Both of the teams worked exceptionally well together despite not having played together prior to this carnival. Every girl on the court gave it their all, fought for every rebound, chased every loose ball and defended every pass.
The division 1 team went through the carnival only losing one game against a strong St Patrick’s College team - the final game of the day. Despite some calls not going the girls way and the game situation being challenging at times, the girls played to the whistle and kept going right up until the final hooter sounded. Unfortunately this loss left this team finishing 2nd overall, and despite many of the girls being disappointed, their frowns quickly turned to smiles when they realised what they had just achieved. Well done.
The division 2 team were also successful on the day winning 4 of their games and losing 4 of their games. Again the girls all worked together each and every game to get the win - always representing the college with great pride. This team finished 5th overall which is a credit to their work and determination throughout the day. Well done.
Our Years 9-10 teams were coached by Mrs Tyra. Again many of these girls had not played with each other before and this proved to be challenging when matched up with strong, physical opponents. The division 1 team won 3 games and lost 5. This resulted in them finishing 8th overall. The division 2 team won 2 of their games and lost 3 resulting in a 5th place overall standing. Congratulations to our girls for always putting in 100% and for never giving up throughout the day.
The Years 11-12 teams also had a great day with both our division 1 and 2 teams finishing 6th overall. The division 1 team had 3 wins and 5 losses. The division 2 team had 2 wins and 5 losses. Again a very strong, talented competition in the senior divisions that proved challenging, yet rewarding for our girls. Thank you to Ms Armour for coaching our senior teams.
Congratulations to all of the girls involved in the Diocesan Netball Carnival this year. Another event that has offered many students the opportunity to be physically active in a competitive environment.
Finally, carnivals like these simply don’t happen without the help and willingness of umpires, volunteers and other officials. Throughout the day MCCC had many students step up and assist the smooth running of the carnival by offering their umpiring skills. A massive thank you to Isabella Ashcroft (Yr 7), Cara Kmet, Jessica Barnes, Emma Searle, Courtney Hoban, Hailee Muerant (Yr 8), Hannah Martin and Rhianna Heaslip (Yr 11) for your assistance on the day and for being such great ambassadors of the college - well done! We also had two ex-students assist on the day with draws, warm ups, scoring and general organisation which was extremely helpful. Thank you to Alyssa Worland and Abby Smith for coming back to help out - it was great!
Looking forward to next year and good luck to the three CCC teams who will be competing in 2 weeks time at Penrith.
