Earlier this week, students in Year 9 completed their first (of three) sessions in Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM). YAM is a program aimed at exploring various components of mental health and the impact that it has on a young person's overall wellbeing. It invites young people to reflect on their emotions and to consider different approaches when faced with life challenges or mental health concerns. Furthermore, it is designed to equip students with a range of strategies to not only deal with challenges that they face in their own lives, but to support friends who may be experiencing challenges of their own. The remaining sessions of YAM will occur over the next two weeks and I’d certainly encourage parents and carers to have a conversation with their sons and daughters with regards to the program.
In Week 10 of term, students in Year 10 will be participating in a program of events known as Year 10 Transition Week. Students will spend one day at Stanwell Tops participating in a range of outdoor recreational activities, one day of pastoral activities, and two days of curriculum-based activities aimed at preparing them for the rigour necessary for Year 11 and 12. Such a program requires a great deal of preparation and planning and I particularly thank and acknowledge the work of Mr Rees, Ms Miller, Mrs Kripal, Mr Daniels and the Year 10 pastoral team for the work that they have done in order to ensure the success of the week’s activities.
Finally, a reminder of the COVID-19 directives that are in place for the remainder of Term 4:
- If a student or staff member is unwell and has any COVID-19 symptoms, even the mildest of symptoms, they should stay home and test, and only return once their symptoms are gone.
- If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please continue to notify the school and remain at home until symptoms have gone.
Wishing you all the best for the week ahead.
Mr David Cloran
This week the first Advent candle was lit.
This candle is called the Hope or the Prophecy Candle.
It is in remembrance of the prophets, especially Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ.
It represents the expectation felt in anticipation of the coming Messiah.
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT YEAR A
First Reading: Is 2:1-5 - All nations shall stream to the mountain of the Lord.
Second Reading: Rom 13:11-14 - Live honourably, the day of the Lord is near.
Gospel: Mt 24:37-44 - The Lord is coming when we least expect.

Year 7-11 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews provide an opportunity for parents and students to meet with their class teachers to review academic progress and discuss areas for growth. This conversation provides valuable feedback and enables the opportunity to ask questions to support students as they progress through their secondary education.
Interviews for Year 7-11 2022 are being held on Monday December 19 between 9:00am and 12:30pm via Zoom. Interview sessions can be booked online through the Compass Parent Portal. In some cases, teachers may be unavailable for these Parent/Teacher/Student interviews and in these circumstances, the respective teachers may make contact with you regarding how you can obtain additional feedback about your child’s academic progress.
Further to the upcoming interviews, please note that Semester 2 Academic Reports for students in Years 7-10 will be made available via Compass on Friday December 16 at approximately 3:30pm.
If you have any questions regarding the upcoming interviews, please do not hesitate to contact the College via an email to info@mcccdow.catholic.edu.au or a phone call to (02) 9603 3000.

From the Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
The past week has been a very busy one with regards to the finalising of our College Leaders for 2024. This process culminated with the announcement yesterday morning and the formal badging of our Student Representative Council at our College Assembly earlier today. Congratulations to all our elected leaders and to Ms Moore and Mr Lozelle who conducted the leadership day on Tuesday as the final piece of the process.
Year Coordinators and Assistant Year Coordinators have been busy over the past few weeks or so interviewing prospective House Captains for 2023. Students currently in Year 9 are eligible for these positions, which are an important leadership opportunity for our Year 10 students in 2023, as well as being an opportunity for those who may have an aim of being on the College Student Representative Council in their HSC year in 2025. This process will culminate next week with the presentation of speeches and voting during next Friday’s Pastoral Assembly.
Elevate Education
The next webinar, Setting up for Success, is on Wednesday 7 December at 6:30pm (AEST) where they will be covering live:

● Extra Reading, and How to Read Around a Topic
The webinar is run live online where the presenter will share Elevate’s research findings and skills and will conduct a live Q&A so you can ask them questions directly.
Important Safety reminder for cyclists
Students who ride bicycles to school are to wear a helmet to and from our property. The carrying of passengers is not permitted on College grounds.
As usual, thank you to all parents and carers for your ongoing support as we enter the final few weeks of the year.
Mr Simon Huntly
Congratulations

Message to Mount Carmel from Rory
"Good afternoon, I (Rory McEvoy), am delighted and grateful to be your sport captain in 2023. I await with pleasure the opportunity to meet and work with all our athletes, and to inspire the sporting life here at Mount Carmel. My co-captain Alexis and I will be available for any questions, concerns or advice regarding sport. Please don’t hesitate to come and see us, we are here to help. I look forward to being your College Sports Captain in 2023.
Message to Mount Carmel from Alexis Blunt
Throughout my years at Mount Carmel Catholic College, I have tried to support the sporting life in any way I can, from Misa competitions to DIO, NSWCCC, and All Schools. Using the experience I have learned from sports, the position of Sports Captain for 2023 allows for my past experiences and skills to be expressed towards uplifting the sports culture within the school community. As a result, this honorable position will allow me to play a significant role in improving the sporting lifestyle at MCCC, and I look forward to hearing from the students and helping them by representing their voices.
- Campbelltown/Camden Ghosts U18 Brewer side that plays in the NSW Premier cricket competition running from October 2022 to March 2023
- Camden District Margaret Peden U15 team over the December/January period
Keep up the good work Jessica!

Communication regarding sport
Students are reminded to continue checking the Compass dashboard for key information relating to sport during the year. Key information will also be communicated to parents via the College Newsletter and notes sent home. Information will also be provided to staff who will communicate key messages with students during Pastoral Care in the morning.
We would love to hear if your child or someone part of our school community, past or present, experiences any sporting success. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any sporting success so we can recognise those achievements in our community.

Over the next four weeks we encourage you to bring in donations that will go directly to families that are struggling with the rising cost of living and those who have been affected by recent natural disasters in our community.
Please see this year's poster with a list of donations that are needed by these families. The 2023 Youth Ministry Leaders will be visiting pastoral classes to collect donations on Monday and Wednesday over the next four weeks. However if you would like to donate on any other day please drop off your donations at the front office of the college
Thankyou in advance for your generosity.

Mount Carmel P&F Clothing Pool sells pre-owned College uniforms at less than half the cost of new uniforms.
You can bring your child's uniforms to the shop when they no longer fit or you no longer need them (Uniforms must be clean and in good condition. Blazers must be dry cleaned). The Second-hand Uniform shop will sell the uniforms on your behalf, and after they sell the P&F Committee will transfer the money to your nominated bank account. The P&F will keep 10% of all sales. You are also able to donate the uniforms and then the P&F will benefit from 100% of the sales.
The Clothing Pool is open from 2.30-4pm on the days listed below. Usually the first Monday of each month. The shop will next be open on Monday 5 December 2022. The shop is run by parent volunteers to raise money for the P&F Committee and to help families of the school with low-cost uniforms.
