Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
In a newsletter toward the end of last year, I spoke of the introduction to the Gospel of St John reflecting on the original translation referring to wisdom and God being one and the same. A theme in this week’s readings is once again based on the concept of wisdom and is again in direct relationship with God. The second reading, Corinthians 2: 6-10 uses the phrase; “The hidden wisdom of God… predestined to be for our glory before the ages began”. Our Christian belief is in an eternal God that has neither start nor end and is a mystery to our minds. We can sometimes get confused and unsure because, as humans, we cannot comprehend the infinite existence of a God who loves us without limit. One of the major beauties of our faith, however, is that there are some things that we cannot understand yet accept and believe. This mystery can be an exciting opportunity to “do all you can with the means at your disposal, and calmly leave the rest to God” (St Mary McKillop). In wisdom, God will travel our journey with us.
Next Wednesday, Feb 15, we will be hosting our Meet and Greet evening for the students and parents of Year 7. This evening will begin in the students’ Pastoral Classes and move to the hall for a short information session. The main purpose of the evening is to enable our newest students to introduce their Pastoral Advisors to their parents and to show them around the main parts of the College where they spend most of their days. This is a great opportunity particularly for new parents to have a look around the College and to orient themselves for when their children might speak about their day. Much of the evening will be an informal interaction and I look forward to meeting many of our new parents on the evening.
The Mount Carmel Opening College Mass will be held on Wednesday Feb 22. As part of our School Improvement Plans for this year we are aiming to invite as many parents to events as possible. As a result of this, all parents are welcome at this celebration. We do however, ask that you notify the College if you wish to attend so that we have sufficient seating in the hall. We will also offer refreshments afterward, however given that it is Ash Wednesday, these will be minimal.
A reminder that our P&F AGM will be held in week 5 on Tuesday 28 Feb in Room I3. The AGM is an important event where parents can vote for a leadership team that will work closely with the senior College staff. During 2022, we did not have a permanent President and this year a number of the P&F leadership will not be standing for re-election as their children have finished at the College. I encourage parents to attend the meeting and to consider taking up a leadership role. The demands are quite small, and your impact will be very important. If we have sufficient time and interest, we will also have a tour of the refurbished Mathematics building.
On Friday March 3 (Week 5), our staff will be attending our first Staff Development Day for the year where we will be working on curriculum professional development around Growth Mindsets. This is the theme for 2023 where we have asked the staff and students to include positivity into their thinking. We will ask the question “what do I need to do in order to achieve a particular goal”? A reminder that these days are pupil free as all staff will be involved in the Professional Development.
Our Year 7, 2024 information evening will be held on Wednesday March 8 (Week 6) in the College Hall. This evening is designed to give prospective students and parents an understanding of what Mount Carmel is about, what we stand for and how we work. Enrolment packages will be available on the night and students and parents will have an opportunity to look through the College and visit faculty displays. More information on this evening will follow in the next few newsletters. If you have a child in Year 6 or know someone who does, please mark this date in your diary.

As we return to something that resembles a “post-covid normal”, it is important to remember that the virus is still present, and that certain protocols and health guidelines are in place with respect to testing and absence due to infection. Catholic Schools NSW has provided schools with a recent document titled “Covid Smart Measure for Term One 2023”. Below are several key points relating to this document.
- Parents and carers are still asked to advise the school if their child has tested positive for COVID-19. Parents are requested to notify the school specifically of the reason why their child is absent from school, as per normal absence protocols. This can be done via the Compass portal or by contacting the school directly
- Stay home if unwell or showing even the mildest of symptoms
- Keep up to date with vaccinations – including the flu vaccine, which is available from your local GP, pharmacy, or Aboriginal Medical Service
- Get tested immediately for COVID-19 if you become symptomatic and isolate until you receive a negative result and are symptom free
- Practice good hand hygiene by washing regularly with soap and water.
Further to this information, the College still has a supply of Rapid Antigen Tests that will be distributed to all students next week to assist with our ongoing endeavours to provide a safe and supportive environment. Thank you for your support with this ongoing initiative.

Assessment Handbooks
Years 12, 11 and 10 now received their 2023 Assessment Handbooks. Students and parents are encouraged to read these carefully to ensure that College and NESA Assessment Policies and Procedures are followed and due dates for formal assessment tasks are met.
Years 7-9 will receive their Assessment Handbooks over the next fortnight.
Change of Course Requests
We have had a number of conversations with students from Years 9, 10 and 11 wanting to change courses or electives. Please note that Friday February 24th will be the last opportunity for students to submit any Change of Course forms to Ms Toogood. If you are unsure about your child’s request, please do not hesitate to contact the College to discuss. Significant changes to their pattern of study will be brought to your attention prior to the Change of Course form being approved and processed.

I am sitting at my desk in the common staffroom – a space which houses sixty-five other teachers – and looking up at a quote I have pinned to my noticeboard. The quote is from my favourite poet T.S. Eliot who asks the following questions: ‘Where is the Life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?’
I heard Eliot’s words repeated by Professor Maryanne Wolf last Sunday morning on ABC radio’s The Minefield – a program which explores the social, cultural, and ethical issues which make up the complexities of our modern world today. Last week’s topic was literacy – a capacity very dear to my heart. One of the hosts – Scott Stephens – spoke passionately about the critical importance of literacy stating that his ‘whole life has been spent in the company of books’, a practice he described as ‘an act of encounter’. In warning that ‘we are on the brink of a new age of illiteracy’, he urged his listeners not to equate reading with mere consumption but rather as an act of attention.
This mention of the word ‘attention’ echoed the message of our dux of 2022, Gabriel Garcia, in the speech he delivered at last Friday’s special assembly. In speaking about the importance of ‘a commitment to hard work and diligence’, Gabriel referenced the French philosopher Simone Weil who stated that ‘Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity’. He urged students to tune out the distractions and silence the noise around them in order to be fully present in the moment. He linked attentiveness with wisdom, understanding, creative expression, critical thinking and self-reflection. And he challenged students to ‘be attentive to the things around us worthy of attention – worthy of our time, consideration, and understanding.’
Young people today – and the not so young as well – are being bombarded with constant information. The acts of skimming, scanning, scrolling, and word-spotting, have become the typical and at times superficial way in which we respond to our busy world. What is being lost in this constant exposure to noise, fragmentation and transience is the ability to be still, to linger, to wait and delay gratification, to think and to reflect. And, as a result, self-knowledge, empathy, and wisdom are waning too. I often use the expression counter-cultural when discussing the educational, social, and spiritual needs of our young people today. I think as parents and teachers, that is exactly what we are being called to be. I hope we have the courage and the will to be just that.

Safer Internet Day - Tuesday 7 February
Safer Internet Day is a global event that brings together communities, families, schools and organisations from more than 200 countries to help create safer online spaces. This worldwide initiative is celebrating 20 years in 2023, making it a great time to reflect as well as look forward. Technology has evolved dramatically in the past two decades and the benefits have been huge. These developments have also exposed us to many risks with real-world impacts, making online safety awareness even more important.
On Tuesday this week, during Pastoral Care Class, we called on all Mount Carmel students to Connect. Reflect. Protect.
Connect safely and with purpose – by keeping apps and devices secure and using social media in positive ways. Reflect before we act – by taking a moment to consider how what we do and say online may affect others. Protect ourselves and others by taking action – by telling family and friends about eSafety and how we can help.
Your child’s Pastoral Advisors encouraged all students to do these simple things so that each day our community can work towards making every day a Safer Internet Day.

Good luck to all out MISA teams going into round one this week.

DIOCESAN TENNIS TEAMS EVENT
8 February 2023 Beaton Park
Girl's Team | Boy's Team |
Angelique Zeeman | Jarrod Berry |
Klara Grbavac | Lucas Faundez |
Esha Jadhav | Adrian Rivadeneira |
Gloria Rivadeneira Pino | Ryan Pullicino |
This year’s Diocesan Tennis Carnival was a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, compete against talented players in the diocese and gain valuable match experience.
The girls were up against John Therry Catholic College in the first round and were unstoppable. The doubles matches were played first and both sets were won without dropping a game, 6-0 and 6-0. Their singles matches were just as convincing as the girls continued their fine form, winning the next four sets 6-0, eliminating John Therry and moving into the next round.
The boys had a much tougher first round match against St Benedict’s Catholic College. Jarrod and Lucas started strongly and won their doubles match 6-2. Adrian and Ryan played well but lost their set 6-1. The singles matches were competitive with both schools winning two sets each. Mount Carmel won the first set 6-0 but then lost the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. For Mount Carmel to get through to the next round, Lucas needed to win his set 6-0, which he did!
Year 7 students Angelique and Klara showed a lot of composure as they competed against a very experienced St Mary’s team in the next round. Both girls had solid groundstrokes and showed a lot of positive energy on court. Gloria and Esha also played consistent tennis but unfortunately, St Mary’s was too strong on the day.
The boys team also had a very tough second round against last year’s winning team Edmund Rice. They fought hard and handled the pressure well, returning tough serves and chasing down balls to stay in the rallies. There was a lot of talent on display, but it was not enough to get through to the next round.
Seven of our students who represented Mount Carmel at this year’s diocesan tennis event had never competed at this level. They are to be congratulated on their performance and the incredible sportsmanship displayed throughout the day. It was a great day of competition and a valuable experience for our upcoming tennis players at Mount Carmel.

Mr Braydon Webb
An exciting start for the Languages Department! Our Year 8 students have embraced their Italian and Spanish language learning with much enthusiasm and excitement. Our ‘Introduction to Languages’ unit has provided students with an insight into the relationship between culture and language. Students had the opportunity to travel virtually to a region of Spain or Italy of their choice and create a virtual postcard to send to a friend.
Our Year 12 Spanish class is hard at work improving upon their conversational skills for their upcoming assessment task. Over the holidays they continued to work on their Spanish by challenging themselves to read novels by well-known Spanish authors such as Isabel Allende. Students have acknowledged that this has improved their comprehension and enriched their vocabulary which they are now able to incorporate into their coursework.
