Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
This Sunday’s gospel, Matthew 10:26-33 tells us that Jesus will witness to the Father, anyone who has witnessed to Him. In a world where so much is happening that takes our time and attention, it is sometimes difficult for us to understand how we might ‘witness’ to God and whether that will benefit us later. Jesus clearly tells us here that God knows each of us (“Every hair on your head has been counted”) and that our efforts in following Him will result in His support for us. Our everyday witness and support for Jesus is reflected in our values and actions but these need to be clearly identified with, and articulated through, the lens of Jesus Christ. Our witness is about more than just being good people. It is about naming our values as Christian and openly accepting Jesus as our guide and our goal. Those who do this for Him will also receive His support.
Earlier this week I had the pleasure of attending the MISA dance performance in Campbelltown. This is a little different to many of our MISA teams in that it is an opportunity to showcase our students’ talents rather than being in competition. In sitting in the auditorium and watching our students, I was impressed by a number of things; the dancers were from a range of year groups and cultural backgrounds which showed the inclusive nature that helps to make Mount Carmel what we are. Our students performed a range of dance styles and most of these were choreographed by the students themselves. The energy in the room and appreciation for all performers from all schools was a credit to those present. Congratulations to all the students and thank you to Mrs Pearce and Mrs Asuit who guided and accompanied the students.
On Wednesday, we hosted a visit from Bishop Brian Mascord. Bishop Brian takes great pleasure in meeting our students and spending time talking with them about their hopes and fears and their aspirations for their future. After spending time with the SRC and the staff, Bishop Brian met with the whole Year 12 cohort and answered any questions they had for him. It was a lovely experience for them to hear stories from his own life and be able to listen to his personal reflections on any topic they wanted to ask.
During this week, we have been travelling the journey with our Year 10 students as they prepare for their Year 11 subject selections. This journey is extremely important as it gives the students some deeper ownership of their own learning. The students attended the information evening on Wednesday followed by subject markets on Thursday. I encourage students and parents to ask as many questions as possible and thank all the staff who gave their time and expertise to assist students in this process.
Next Monday evening, Thursday evening and Friday morning we will be holding our Year 7 – 10 parent/student/teacher meetings. These meetings are an important opportunity for each of these people to come together as a team to ensure a combined approach to improving student outcomes. I encourage all parents to make bookings to discuss your child’s progress. As has been the case for the last few years, the evenings will be face to face meetings whilst the Friday morning is via zoom. There are no restrictions around which date or type of meeting you choose to attend as we hope you will take the opportunity that is best for your circumstances.
As next Friday will be PTS meetings, there will not be any classes conducted on this day as teachers will be involved in the meetings. As is our normal practice when we do not have classes on Friday, this will be the last newsletter for this term. I hope that all students have a relaxing break over the term 2 holidays and you all get to spend some quality time together as a family.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
As we head towards the end of another successful term of learning, there is certainly no suggestion that we are winding down towards a break, particularly if the past week is any indication.
We have seen a range of important activities take place which are important for the ongoing spiritual, learning and wellbeing development of students. Bishop Brian’s visit to speak to Year 12 on Wednesday night, the Year 11 2024 Subject Information Night on Wednesday evening, Year 12 State of Origin Social on Wednesday night, College Photos and Year 11 2024 Subject Marketplace on Thursday and Year 7 Excursion to Western Sydney Zoo today were the major events that took place. In Pastoral lessons earlier today, Year 8 participated in the “Job Jump” program, an online careers initiative that looks at goal-setting and resume building, Year 9 took part in a Mental Health presentation courtesy of the Black Dog Institute, Year 10 engaged in some follow-up activities from their Subject Marketplace day yesterday and Years 11 & 12 conducted assemblies with a focus on the remaining term of learning for their respective Preliminary and HSC courses. A lot of time and energy goes into the preparation and presentation of these various programs and I thank all staff and students for their contribution and cooperation over the course of the past week.
A particular thanks to all staff, students, families and carers for their support with the annual photos yesterday. The cooperation of students in terms of uniform, grooming and behaviour on the day and the support of staff in supervising and assisting the process drew significant praise from the photographers, who have worked at Mount Carmel for some time. A reminder for those individuals and families who were absent yesterday that catch-ups will take place on Monday 26th June between 9 am and 11.30am. If families or carers have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Front Office. A reminder that envelopes need to be brought on Monday irrespective of whether photos are being purchased or not.
Mr Lo Cascio has made reference to interviews next week and that there will be no Newsletter. Could I take this opportunity to wish all members of our community a peaceful break and again thank everyone for their ongoing support throughout the past term.
All the best for the week ahead.
Mr Simon Huntly

Acting Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
This week students across all year groups were immersed in pastoral care lessons and community building experiences. Some of the highlights included students in Year 8 and 10 delving into Career pathway information and resources, while Year 9 were involved in listening to a guest speaker presentation from the Black Dog Institute by Olympian Cross Country Skier Zana Evans. Our Year 7 students may have missed their scheduled Pastoral care period but had a wonderful experience as a grade at Taronga Zoo. A huge thank you to our 2023 SRC who presented a success guide to the HSC year to our Year 11 cohort. Finally, Year 12 had a great evening on Wednesday night as they gathered together to watch the State of Origin as a community building experience. Unfortunately, we can’t say anything great about the final score!
Thank you for your continued support of the College and your children over Term 2. Please see below for some information from the e-Safety Commissioner and a local school holiday program.
Thank you for your ongoing support.

Around the Grounds
The 2023 MISA Dance Festival and preparation were surely one of the most memorable and exciting times for the whole team. From being a part of the team for the past two years under the choreography of other wonderful students in the school, to becoming one of the team's choreographers created an atmosphere that will truly become a core memory in the future. The preparation we choreographers had to undergo was stressful but so unbelievably worth the result it produced. Our MISA team incorporated a range of styles including Tap, Polynesian, Contemporary and Hip Hop that were merged to create our piece of work ‘Unity.’ As a group, each member is an important component of our achievements as a whole. Our performance reveals the complex nature of our community, cultural traditions and talents of those that reside in our space. As choreographers of the Hip Hop crew, we wanted to express all our thanks and wisdom to every one of our team, for executing our choreography with great pride and doing their best in absolutely everything thrown their way, their hard work has truly paid off.
The MISA Dance festival itself was held this Tuesday, the 20th of June. The team had arrived at the college by 8:15 am to begin preparations such as hair, makeup, and our favourite part - face glitter. After, we made our way to The Cube at Campbelltown Catholic Club, where we were greeted by many friendly and familiar faces from previous years. From there, we had our rehearsal time on stage before performances began. The Mount Carmel team was the last act of the first session which gave us plenty of time to calm our nerves. Our routine ran perfectly, each group performed with all they had and had the crowd cheering. After that session, we had our time to relax, eat and hydrate before the beginning of the second session and the other schools began their routines. It was an experience like no other, particularly for our Year 7s and other older students that had never attended previously.
As quoted by the leaders of the MISA organisation, this event was not a competition as such, but a celebration of dance, our cultures and talents. We would like to thank our amazing teachers, Mrs Pearce and Mrs Asuit. For your creative ideas, feedback and overall enthusiasm towards the entire process. For the glitter, continuous photos and videos, and many lunches skipped for extra rehearsal times, without you two, MISA Dance would not be possible. We are looking forward to the 2024 MISA Dance season and what is to come. We hope to see many new faces next year out on the dance floor with us!

Diocesan Hockey
The Diocese of Wollongong Hockey Championships held in Narellan on the 19 of June saw the Open Boys and Open Girls teams compete with determination and resilience. While the teams were unable to secure any wins, their spirit and effort were commendable, with the highlight being the two draws achieved by the Open Girls team. Well done to all athletes who attended and hopefully we can build stronger results next year with such a young side.
Diocesan Volleyball
The Diocese of Wollongong Volleyball Championships held in Wollongong on the 21 of June witnessed an exhilarating display of skill and sportsmanship as the Open Boys and Open Girls teams showcased their talent on the court. The Open Girls team demonstrated exceptional teamwork, determination, and resilience as they navigated through their early matches. Finishing top of their group they quickly showed why they were one of the favourites winning their semi-final to reach the final. They went on to win the final and be crowned 2023 Diocesan of Wollongong Champions. The boys however had an unlucky day. They fought hard but were beaten by competition favourites Edmund Rice and ended up finishing 3rd overall. A tremendous effort by some of our most talented athletes at Mount Carmel. Well done to the players and their coaches Mr Daniels and Ms Asuit. Please see separate report in the newsletter.

We are pleased to share the achievements of our Open Girls Soccer Team at the recent NSWCCC Wollongong Football Knockout Tournament held on June 22. Diocesan Volleyball Championships
The Diocesan Volleyball Championships were an intense and competitive. But overall a fun-filled day as it was spent with peers and teammates. On the court, we all played at our very best, no matter the opponent. The first four games of the day had limited hiccups, with Sienna’s accurate and deep serves getting us on top with points. Along with Chelsea, Lereit, and Zoe’s excellent passes and tips.
The semis were a crucial round for it would determine if we, the MCCC girls, would progress through to the finals. The competition against St Pat’s was the closest game in the whole tournament, as the score was 34-23, an 11 point difference. Compared to the other rounds such as St Benedicts (59-16) and St Joseph's (40-20), this round’s results were too close for comfort. Mrs Asuit boosted the team’s spirit with an infamous “inspirational speech” going into the finals. The whole team walked into the game with radiating energy and confidence ready to face the fierce competition. St Mary’s.
Having to win 2 sets (that went to 15 points) to secure the win, the team’s chemistry and communication had to be higher than ever before. The first set pushed all of us to perform top-notch, rewarding us with winning the first set, 8-15. The second set went a lot smoother. With all of us on the court calling for the ball and working together to get a convincing kill from the hitters. The score resulted in a persuasive win 15-3.
Overall, the volleyball tournament was a rewarding tournament filled with new experiences for everyone. A memorable win and title for the whole team and our supportive coach Mrs Asuit!
By Isabelle Villena
We would like to express our gratitude to Mrs Asuit for her unwavering support throughout the day, as it was her optimism that essentially led us to success. Her encouragement and motivation brought us together as a team, lifting up our spirits when we encountered disappointment. Nevertheless, it was the nine girls who secured the title of the competition that deserve recognition for their determination and tireless efforts. Despite the fact that we felt anxious on the way there and saw the competition as we walked through the hall, as we settled in the nerves died down, and we were able to have a fun day of volleyball with victory on our minds. All six games were won with massive point differentials and a smooth win in the finals. Congratulations to the team.

On the 21 of June, Melissa and I as well as seven other girls travelled down to Wollongong to participate in the Diocesean Volleyball Tournament. Our team set the tone early on, as we displayed unceasing technique, cohesion and strategic approaches in our opening matches that evidently helped carry us to the finals which we owe to Mrs Asuit and her impeccable training and coaching. Throughout the day as we played, the team’s bond grew fonder, which we found drastically aided our morale during tough situations on the court especially in the Finals. I know I speak on behalf of all the team when I express our utter content with the competition and its overall outcome.

Vinnies Essentials Kits
Those who are trapped in poverty or facing crises often encounter limited choices, leaving them in a difficult position of prioritising between heating their homes, paying rent, buying food, or maintaining personal hygiene.
As a College, we can gather and create essentials kits to aid those in need. Each year group will be responsible for the donation of particular items. YMLs and Carmelite Captains will be visiting pastoral classes to collect donations next week on:
Monday 26 June
Wednesday 28 June
MCCC Knitting Club
Students have been busy working on amazing creations in the library and recess and lunch on Thursdays. We have just created our first blanket with support from Mrs Marchand who stitched the squares together.
If any parents, guardians or carers have any pre-loved wool and knitting needles lying around that can be donated, our knitting and crocheting community would really appreciate it.
Thank you in advance for your support and generosity.

Mount Carmel Netball Club has had a great 2023 winter season. Our three teams all qualified for the semi finals that were played last Saturday at the Minto netball courts complex.
We are very proud of our 14’s team who played so well on the day, never giving up, but sadly were defeated by Emerald Hills Ravens. Our Grads team played a competitive match against Bluejays and finished with a loss to the Minor Premiers but will be back this Saturday to play against Glenquarie All Stars at 12.10pm competing for a place in the grand final.
Our Senior team had a great win and earned their place in the grand final to be played at 3.00pm on Saturday 26th August.
The girls would love to have support from the College community so everyone is invited to come down to the courts to cheer them on.
