Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
Earlier this year, I had the privilege of attending a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. One of the places we visited was Mt Tabor – the place where the Transfiguration of Jesus is said to have occurred. This is the solemnity that we celebrate this Sunday. Whilst the picture here does not truly reflect the height and magnitude of this mountain, you might be able to see the lowlands and the mountains off in the distance. The Transfiguration of the Lord is the moment where Jesus, Peter, John and James went to pray and Jesus “clothing became brilliant as lightening” and He was joined by Moses and Elijah (Luke 9: 28-36). The mountain is extremely steep and is visible as the highest point in the area. The Gospel goes on to tell us; “a voice came from the cloud, saying, ‘This is my son, the Chosen One. Listen to Him’”. Whilst standing on the mountain, it was easy to become engulfed in the place and to imagine that moment. The last phrase “Listen to Him” is a message that is as relevant today as it was 2000 years ago. Our take away from this is consistent and simple, Jesus is the message, we should listen to Him.
Last Sunday the Campbelltown Catholic Club hosted their annual Mass and Luncheon. Our college was represented at the Mass by two of our Year 12 students (Jasmyne Douangdara and Hayden Cannon). The Catholic Club are wonderful supporters of Catholic Education in the MacArthur region and have been great supporters of Mount Carmel. Thank you to Jasmyne and Hayden for participating on our behalf.
Today, Mackillop House celebrated their Patron Day. They are named after Australia’s first saint, St. Mary of the Cross Mackillop. Mount Carmel’s first Assistant Principal was a Josephite nun and so the connection to this order founded by St Mary is strong. I wish all in Mackillop House a wonderful House Day.
This weekend, around 10 of our Yr 11 students will be attending the Marist Youth Forum in Mittagong. They will join students from Marist schools around the state to discuss and develop their spirituality. Thank you to Ms Nguyen who will accompany them on the weekend and to Mr Teuma and Mr Huntly who will act as bus drivers.
Last Wednesday evening many of our middle leaders assisted with the Year 10 Subject Selection meetings. For those unfamiliar with this process, these meetings followed the information sessions that students and parents attended to help them determine what subjects they will choose as electives for Stage 6. These meetings build on the academic prediction process that starts in Year 9 and assists students to determine what subjects and levels they are tracking toward before they make their choices. The meetings give an opportunity for the students and parents to discuss options and ensure that they choose a pattern of study that matches their interests, abilities and future pathway. The guidance staff provide is very valuable and helps to get students into the correct courses. Thank you to all those who gave of their time and knowledge and a special thanks to Ms Miller and Ms Toogood who organised this evening.
On Tuesday August 15 (week 5) we will be holding our Term 3 P&F meeting. As always, this is held in room I3 (at the top of the turning circle) and begins at 7 pm. This term our guest speaker will be Mr David Teuma (ICLT Coordinator). Mr Teuma will be speaking about technology use at the College and in particular Artificial Intelligence. As always, all parents and caregivers are welcome.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
As you would be aware, earlier this week, our Graduating Class of 2023 commenced their most significant assessment period to date - their Trial HSC Examinations. I take the opportunity to sincerely commend these students on the way that they have approached the preparation and execution of these exams. As daunting as a three-hour examination may seem, the cohort have demonstrated a clear sense of purpose, determination and maturity over these past few days which will place them well for the week ahead and, in the process, in readiness for the HSC Exams in just a few months’ time.
This time of the year also sees a range of events and activities involving our Year 11 students as they undertake the transition from being Preliminary students to the next group of school leaders. This weekend, a group of our Year 11 Youth Ministry Leaders are participating in the Marist Forum at Mittagong. This program is coordinated by the Marist Youth Ministry team and is a gathering of students from Marist schools across NSW and the ACT. Students will hear from guest speakers, take part in a variety of fun and creative activities that aim to develop a deeper sense of our Marist identity as well as creating contemplative spaces to personally explore the notion of living a meaningful and purposeful Catholic life.
On Friday next week and the following Monday, all Year 11 students will participate in the Mount Carmel Leadership Program which takes place both on site at the College and at Teen Ranch in Cobbitty. At the conclusion of this program, students will have the opportunity to vote for the Student Representative Council for 2024 which itself is a significant opportunity to ensure that student voice continues to play a key role in all we do at Mount Carmel.
I thank all students for their involvement and cooperation in these activities and the staff who have organised and assisted in the preparation and planning for these significant events. This time of the year again highlights the combination of Learning, Wellbeing and Spiritual components of a Mount Carmel education. As always, should you have any questions or suggestions about how we can continue to support your son or daughter, please contact their son or daughters Pastrial Advisor, Year Coordinator or the Front Office staff.

The College has Mackillop House, because the first Assistant Principal, Sr Maria Casey, was a Josephite sister. Sr Maria was instrumental in the process of creating Australia's first saint.
Some background to the Mackillop story is below:
In 2010, Mary Mackillop became the first ever Australian to be formally acknowledged as a saint. A life that reveals the extraordinary in the ordinary.
She was born in Melbourne in 1842 and died on the 8 August 1909. Her family experienced painful economic and social change. Their poverty resulted in Mary’s early maturity. She gave emotional and financial support to her family and learned what it meant to be responsible for those too young and helpless to care for themselves. She received a sacred calling: to be with the poor and to work for their spiritual and social wholeness. The spirit of St Joseph inspired her.
She walked the way of the Cross through her harsh interactions with the hierarchy of the Catholic Church of the time. She was rejected and abandoned by the Church authorities and she grew spiritually and became a woman wrapped in God.
Her Sisters of St Joseph struggled for survival and she worked tirelessly to have them recognised and accepted.
Saint Mary MacKillop’s life teaches us never to give up…to keep walking….to refocus on Christ who is our compass.
She was courageous, compassionate, and responsible. Her last words were “GO ON”.
This is a heritage for us at Mount Carmel. To go on no matter how hard anything is in our lives and we are so privileged to have our house named after her.
Mrs Christine Meharg
Learning & Teaching at the College
Thank you to the students of Year 10 and parents for their participation in the Yr 11 2024 Subject Selection process. Now that selections have been entered, we are now able to begin generating the timetable lines for next year. Students will receive their final confirmation of courses in early Term 4.
The examinations continue this week and conclude on Monday 14 August. Yr 12 will resume regular lessons on Wednesday 16th August, following the Retreat Reconnector Day on Tuesday 15 August.
Students are reminded to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time of their exams. If students have morning and afternoon examinations, they are not permitted to leave the College between examinations. Students are welcome to stay after an examination to study in the Library or arrive earlier in the day to study before an afternoon examination. In these instances students will be required to sign in at the Library and remain in this space to study. On days students do not have a scheduled examination they are welcome to attend the Library to study. A reminder that they can only sign in and out of the Library once during the school day.
To also assist students with their preparations and study, the College Library will be open on additional evenings (3:30-6:30pm) during Week 3 and 4. A schedule of these times has been shared with Yr 12 students. Please note that the additional evenings are only for Yr 12 students. Yr 10 and 11 students continue to be welcome to attend Senior Study on Tuesdays.
If, for any reason, students are ill or cannot attend the examination because of an accident or misadventure, you must contact the College to inform Mrs Pearce, Mr Lozelle, Ms Miller and Miss Toogood as soon as possible. The general rule is that the student is to attend the examination if possible, unless there is significant medical advice not to do so. If a student does miss an examination, they must follow the College Illness/Misadventure process. Miss Toogood or Ms Miller will be in contact with students to make arrangements for missed examinations.
Stage 5 Elective Course Selection
This week we have begun the process of Elective Subject Selection for Yr 9 and Yr 10 2024. All information regarding elective selection will be communicated to students via the Stage 5 Electives Selections Google Classroom. All students currently in Yr 8 and 9 should ensure that they have joined this Google Classroom.
The following are key dates for the Stage 5 Electives Selection process:
11 August 2023: Elective Launch Presentations and Handbook
Students will be sent a series of videos via the Stage 5 2023 Elective Selections Google Classroom explaining the electives on offer and the options available. Students are encouraged to seek advice from KLA Coordinators and subject specialists if they have any questions regarding any of the electives explained within these videos.
16 August 2023: Stage 5 2024 Information Night
From 6:30pm, KLA Coordinators and specialist teachers will be available in the Champagnat Centre to answer questions regarding the electives that they have on offer. At 7:00pm, members of the College Leadership Team will present information regarding the process of selecting electives for 2024. Leader of Learning - Curriculum Pedagogy & Leader of Learning - Acting Curriculum Administration
Acting Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
Pastoral Care & Wellbeing
In our fast-paced and ever-changing world, the significance of holistic wellbeing cannot be understated. The demands of contemporary education, combined with various stressors in a teenagers life, have led to a growing need for overarching care that addresses the many aspects of an individual. Pastoral Care is often described as the oil for learning, the nourishment for the education journey.
At Mount Carmel we start the school day with Pastoral Care Class. This is a time and space provided for every student to connect with their peers and their Pastoral Advisor, building a great sense of community. This morning routine provides a time for each student, under the guidance of a Pastoral Advisor and Coordinators, to set themselves up for individual success. Therefore, I sincerely thank our team of Year Coordinators who work tirelessly each week leading their Pastoral teams, to ensure that the students in their cohorts are cared for and their wellbeing supported so the students are at their best for learning each day.
Across the Grades
Year 7 - This term our focus has been on being reflective and effective learners. We have reviewed semester reports and examined strengths and weaknesses relating to academics. This week we have moved onto the benefits of goal setting and creating SMART goals that will feed forward for the rest of the year.
Mr Andrew Rees
Year 8 - In the last few weeks, Year 8 have completed a Semester 1 report evaluation, focused on mindfulness techniques, and "applying good study tips" to help them be on top of their assessments and achieve personal best results. Students have developed their own goals that they can apply to help them be on top of their studies. Year 8 have explored a variety of mindfulness techniques to help them relax during stressful periods of time. They have also explored strategies that allow them to have a positive mindset, especially when it comes to completing school work and maintaining positive and healthy relationships with friends and teachers.
Mr Joseph Sullivan
Year 9 - This term Year 9 have been focusing on building their skills in leadership in preparation for the House Captain Expression of Interest coming up. Each Thursday Year 9 have been exploring concepts related to characteristics of leadership skills and what it 'looks like' to be a certain leader. This week, students are putting some of these skills to the test by trying to problem solve a scenario individually, before taking on the task next week as a group. Year 9 have been competing in fortnightly 'minute-to-win-it' style challenges to accrue house points. During the Year assembly last week students were keen to cheer on their peers. It was surprisingly competitive. Over the course of the next few weeks, Year 9 will also be exposed to ways they can be more 'financially' savvy. Mr Daniels will be presenting in Week 4 and Week 6 during the Year Assemblies along with external professionals to help students understand the concept 'making money work'.
Mr Brendan Berkeley
Year 10 - This week in Year 10 there was a buzz around Subject Selection Interviews as well as discussions revolving around the work experience opportunities that are becoming available to students. We celebrated MacKillop Day and our Year 10 Captains facilitated a trivia competition between the other houses during assembly time. Year 10 has begun to receive assessment notifications indicating a heavy assessment period looming. Please revisit the assessment calendar provided to you at the beginning of the year and generate some discussion about this with your child to ensure that they are adequately prepared.
Miss Alison Armour
Year 11 - With Year 12 students on Trial HSC Examinations, Pastoral Advisors have had the opportunity to lead 1:1 interviews with the Year 11 students. These interviews have supported discussions around goal setting and what students would like their HSC year to look like.
Mr Kevin Harpley
Year 12 - In preparation for the final term of Year 12 secondary education, the Pastoral team has worked to ensure a holistic approach to the term ahead. With the support of the College Leadership Team and our Catholic Care Counsellors, we have focussed on both the students academic and wellbeing goals. This week Year 12 commenced the Trial HSC Examinations. The cohort have approached these examinations with a level of maturity and eagerness to complete the last of their school based formal assessment tasks. We look forward to continuing this support as we move to graduation at the end of this term and the final HSC Examinations starting on the 11th October.
Mrs Clarissa Pearce
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Mrs Theresa Moore
Around the Grounds
Term 3 is flying by with sport across the college flowing smoothly. MISA teams had mixed results this week with a mix bag of results. We had the inaugural U15’s Boys Rugby League Tri-Series kicking off against John Therry this week. With these two schools being the strongest in Rugby League within the MISA competition other schools decided to withdraw from division one which led to the 3-match series being created. We also had 50 Mount Carmel students represent the College at the Diocesan Athletics Championship on Friday of Week 2. Below is a detailed summary of the day with some highlighted results from our best and brightest athletes. Upcoming we enter a quiet period of Diocesan sport which gives our athletes a much-needed rest from a busy schedule so far this year.
On Friday 28 July 2023, Mount Carmel sent 60+ students to compete at the Diocesan Athletics Carnival held at Campbelltown Stadium. Overall, Mount Carmel performed well, finishing in 8th place overall with 424 total points. Our males finished with 294 points and our females with 130 points. There were several standout performances from our students which have been listed below.
Our students consistently tried their best in all their events, with several students stepping up and filling in for some absent students on the day. It was also excellent to see Year 12 and Year 11 students on the day setting a positive example for our junior students, always motivating and encouraging our students in everything they did.
The strength of our students was on full display when we were able to field six relay teams across all age groups and genders at the conclusion of the carnival. We had some great results and some near misses in our relay teams. We also had one of our brightest young talents Ashton Taeiloa break the discus record at a staggering 42.69 meters throw. Overall, the day was a success, with several students being selected into the Diocesan to compete at the NSWCCC Carnival. Thank you for a great day.
The following students have been selected into the Wollongong Diocesan Team for the following events:
- Kaylee Attard - 200m
- Deangel Finau - High Jump
- Ethan Littlewood - 1500m, 800m & 400m
- Ashton Taeiloa - Discuss, Javelin & Shot Put
- Shou Ye - 100m, 100m & 400m
The following students performed extremely well on the day and were unfortunate to miss out on selection for the Diocesan Team.
- Monique Jakovljevic - 3rd Place 1500m
- Blake Bolwell - 4th Place 100m
- Dominique Bzdega - 4th Place 100m
- Abdul Khan - 3rd Place 400m
- Jayden Kurniawan - 3rd Place 400m
- Micheal Bzdega - 2nd Place Long Jump, 3rd Place Triple Jump
- Kaylee Attard - Equal 2nd Place High Jump

All three students have continued to display their sporting prowess throughout the year with all three students representing Mount Carmel at Diocesan events, NSWCCC events and MISA teams. Well done.
Evangeline De Guzman - Taekwondo Australian Open
On the 9 July, Eva competed at the Taekwondo Australian Open in Brisbane. This is an international competition that hosts some of the best Taekwondo athletes across Australia and the world. Eva performed outstandingly and won a bronze medal in her division. In addition to this Eva also competed at the NSW State Championships and Australian national selections winning Gold in her division. Congratulations from Mount Carmel to Eva on her amazing achievements. In light of her achievements, she has also been selected to train weekly with the Australian Taekwondo Performance Pathway Program in NSW. We look forward to hearing about more success in Eva’s endeavours.
MISA - Term 3 Round 2
SPORT | RESULT | MVP | Short Report |
Softball 10-12 Girls Mr Withnall |
VS SBAC Win 7-5 |
Jessica McMillan | Building off a fantastic start to the term last week, the girls continued to grow in confidence and showed tremendous support of one another. Leaving runners in scoring positions in the first innings meant that we were down at the bottom of the first, however, some smart batting and base running saw us walk in 5 runs against their 1. A particular mention goes to our lead pitcher, Jessica McMillan, for battling the conditions and pulling us through combined with some great fielding at 3rd base from Hannah Casey. Well done to the team, here's to more wins in the near future. |
Netball 7-8 Girls Ms Jefferys |
VS SPT Loss 23-7 |
Ella Van Kalker | The girls started off strong with only a 6 point difference in the first quarter but unfortunately the opposition had good defence throughout the remaining quarters. The girls played hard until the last minute of the final quarter and deserve to be commended on their efforts. MVP is awarded to Ella Van Kalker as she was persistent with being up against a tough defence. |
Netball 9-10 Girls Mrs Armour |
VS SPT Win 31-19 |
Sienna Finn | This week we played around with some different combinations on the court and still walked away with the win. Our player of the match is Sienna Finn who scored the majority of the goals and can always be relied upon to get the rebounds and jump for those high and tricky goal circle passes. Well done girls. |
Indoor Cricket 10-12 Boys Mr O’Connell |
VS BAC Loss 117-82 |
Arjun Rapal | Another hard game against a good opponent. The boys came out strong but their bowling let them down. The boys fought until the end and kept the scoreboard at a respectable score. More improvement needed to get the boys their first win |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Miss Heath |
VS MAG Loss 4-2 |
Cara Glinatsis | Great effort by the girls this week, with plenty of positive shots and spectacular saves by Cara Glinatsis but unfortunately the team conceded 2 goals in the final minutes of the second half, leading to a 4-2 loss. Great effort, looking forward to a win next week. |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Mr King |
VS MAG Draw 2-2 |
Isaiah Nakasenh |
The boys got off to a slow start and were unlucky to concede a goal early in the game against Magdalene Catholic College. A shot by the opposing striker saw an unfortunate deflection off Ace Phommasaeng-Hoang into the goal. Despite being down 1 nil, the boys managed to regroup and were able to claw back two goals, thanks to some brilliant attacking runs by Isaiah Nakasenh and a nicely timed penalty by Sean Phonthaphanh. The boys were unlucky to come away with a draw today after conceding a goal in the final minute of play. Magdalene were able to capitalise on a corner kick that was taken in the dying seconds of the game, with the score finishing up at 2-2. A special mention should go to Izral Marmont and Dylan Jacobs for their strong work rate and effort today. |
Soccer 9-10 Boys Mr Berkeley |
VS MAG Loss 2-1 |
David Abraham | With a slow start last week, the team turned up the concentration levels and began very strongly. At times, the energy levels were a little too high with some player positions leaving space in-behind the ball, but nevertheless it was a strong start. We conceded an early goal from a lapse in concentration with a few opposition midfielders being left unmarked in the box. The boys didn’t let this slide and retaliated quickly by clawing back a goal right before half time after a nicely timed finish by Anthony Peric. A few substitutions were made at half time to allow for the tired legs and hot weather, and once again we started off the half strong. There were a lot of end-to-end plays and both teams were doing well to keep each other out. However, 5 minutes before the end of the match, Magdalene had a fortunate run against play and had Marcus second guess himself, exposing Brodie in goals and all it took was a little chip over the keeper, resulting in the final goal to be scored. Despite the 2-1 loss, the team played well together and will aim to improve on their communication next week. Special shout out to David Abraham as MVP for his extremely high work rate. |
AFL 10-12 Girls Mrs Abra |
VS SPT Win 33-14 |
Gemma Olling | It doesn’t matter how many State Reps the opposition may have, the team that will be victorious is one that works together and plays with 100% commitment for the duration of the game. That’s what MCCC did in our game against St Pat’s with a 33-14 win. Our midfielders were strong and worked hard with Gemma Oiling taking MVP. In attack & defence, Gemma was on fire! Our Forwards shared the goals with Charlotte & Liesl being our highest point scorers and Amelia, Hailee & Krystal all contributing to our victory as well. Well done girls. Let’s keep enjoying our AFL games and improving week by week! |
AFL 10-12 Boys Mr Kawa |
VS MAS Loss 66-1 |
George Chahda |
The boys endured a disappointing defeat to a formidable opponent in the 66-1 lost in Macqurie Fields. The boys made their best effort but the slick attack and fitness of the opposition proved too much for the boys to handle. A special mention to George Chahda for his commitment to defence in saving goals and making crucial tackles. On to next week. |
Rugby League U/15's Mr Harpley
|
VS JTCC Loss 10-4 Game 1/3 |
Hudson Warren |
A close start to the tri series against John Therry Catholic Colleges unfortunately ended in defeat. The boys came out strong against an experienced JTCC side and were unlucky not to score in the initial stages of the game with 3 back to back sets inside their 20m. The inability to turn this pressure into points hurt the boys as JTCC finally made their way up the field and scored under the posts to take a 6 point lead. The boys fought back and off the back of a great run from Hudson Warren we crashed over in the coroner. The game stayed close at 4-6 for the majority of the game until JTCC scored off the back of a couple of penalties leaving MCCC 6 points adrift. They fought hard in the final stages and nearly hit back but the boys ran out of time. We take confidence going into game two in week 5. |
15 August | NSW CCC Opens Netball School Based Competition |

Year 7's Wild Expedition to Western Sydney Zoo
Year 7 students embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Western Sydney Zoo in Week 9, Term 2. They delved into the captivating world of animal classification and adaptations. The students had a wonderful learning experience, observing diverse animal species up close and understanding how they have adapted to their unique environments. At the zoo, some courageous students encountered a python up close, which allowed them to witness firsthand the fascinating behaviour and adaptations of these slithering reptiles. It was an extraordinary experience that left everyone awe-inspired and more appreciative of the wonders of the natural world.
Year 10 ‘Fizzics’ Incursion
Year 10 students had a blast during their ‘fizzics’ incursion last term, diving deep into the fascinating world of chemistry. This interactive session allowed them to explore chemical reactions, bonding, and various properties of elements. This immersive experience undoubtedly ignited a passion for chemistry among our young year 10 scientists.
Year 11 Investigating Science
Year 11 Investigating Science students are currently exploring the effectiveness of science models to enhance their learning and understanding of scientific concepts. They took on the challenge of building 3D physical replicas of an atom, unravelling the complexities of atomic structure in a tangible and visually captivating way. This project demonstrated their dedication to scientific inquiry and innovation.
Science Week 2023
The highlight of Term 3 is undoubtedly the much anticipated Science Week, scheduled to take place during week 7. The school theme for National Science Week in 2023 is Innovation: Powering Future Industries. The theme incorporates the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence.
