Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
On Thursday we held our SRC, 2024 induction day. This is an opportunity to bring together our student leaders to educate them on the values of leadership and the processes required for them to work as a team. In contemplating this week’s first reading (Romans 12:1-2) I am drawn back to part of the focus of our SRC day. The reading says; “Do not model yourselves on the behaviour of the world around you, but let your behaviour change, modelled by your new mind”. Our leaders were reminded of our MCCC Graduate statement that articulates that we hope each graduating student will, amongst other things, be a person of integrity. This is a person who lives what they believe, and we hope their beliefs are based on our focus as a Christ-centred community. The students were encouraged to look into themselves and to consider how they might become the ‘bearer of Christ’ to others. At the end of the day, each student spoke to a panel of our staff leadership team regarding their own thoughts and expectations around student leadership. From this, our College Captains and portfolio holders will be determined and we will announce these early next week. Congratulations to all the students for the high standard they contributed. This day augers well for student leadership in 2024.
On Tuesday evening we hosted the Major Works evening at the College. This is the night each year where our students display their major projects that they have submitted as part of the Higher School Certificate. This year, the major works were provided by students in Visual Arts, Industrial Technology (Timber), Society and Culture (PIP) and Extension English. We had a large number of parents and students go through the rooms and there were many comments on the high quality of projects and the time it would have taken for them to be completed. It was lovely to see guests discussing the projects and reading the PIPs and essays. Congratulations to all the students who submitted works and thank you to the staff who assisted them in these.
On Friday we finally had the opportunity of recognising our Mount Carmel Day award winner, Mrs Melina Trimarchi. This award usually occurs on the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, however this year, Mrs Trimarchi was on leave. We are fortunate to have a member of our community such as Mrs Trimarchi who goes well beyond expectations in support of our staff and students. She is often working outside of her paid hours to ensure that staff are fed at evening meetings, hospitality is provided at Graduations and information nights and students are looked after when they are a little down. Congratulations to Mrs Trimarchi who is a worthy recipient of the Mount Carmel Community Award for 2023.
On Wednesday Sept 6, we will be holding the final Parent/Teacher/Student meetings for our current Year 12 students. This is the last opportunity for parents to gather feedback on their children for areas of improvement prior to their HSC examinations. I encourage all Year 12 parents to attend to gain valuable information or simply to say thank you to the staff who have assisted your children so ably in their final year of secondary studies.
At our last P&F meeting, the P&F decided to change the format of a lucky draw that occurs at the end of each year. For families who have paid their P&F contribution, you will go into a draw to win $200 worth of vouchers for Christmas. There will be $200 won in each year group (ie 6 x $200 draws) and this will occur at the final P&F meeting on November 7. If you have made your contribution to the P&F by the start of that week, you will automatically be in the draws.
As I advertised in last week’s newsletter, we recently became aware that one of our families lost all of their possessions in a fire. The P&F have requested that I include the link to a GoFundMe page where community members might make a donation. Please find the link here should you wish to support this family as they try to recover from this tragedy.
A reminder that next Monday, September 4, we will hold a small Father’s Day breakfast similar to the gathering we held for Mother’s Day. This will be before school on the Monday to avoid any possible clashes with our local primary schools. Please RSVP to the College if you would like to attend and I wish a very Happy Father’s Day to all our deserving dads.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Thursday our 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC) elected leaders participated in their annual induction day. This was an opportunity for the group to reflect on what leadership entails, engage in team activities, present prepared speeches and formulate ideas that might address some of the strengths and needs of the College during their leadership experience over the coming 12 months. It was also the final stage in determining College Captains, Vice Captains and Folio leaders for 2024. Thanks to Mr Harpley, Ms Gardner and all our 2024 leaders for their contribution to what was a very successful day. Yesterday also saw our Indigenous students attend the Catholic Education Office’s Bungawarra Cultural Day in Kiama. This enabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the Diocese of Wollongong to meet with each other and Elders, as well as participate in cultural activities throughout the day. Thanks to Ms Oldfield and Ms Abra for supervising and supporting the students throughout the day. Our Year 10 MISA Public Speaking team also participated in this year’s event at St.Patrick’s College on Thursday. Thanks to Ms Borg and the Public Speaking team for their efforts.
Today at our College Assembly we were finally able to recognise our Years 7 to 10 Academic Awards for Semester One. This saw over 100 students receive awards for Academic Effort, Academic Achievement and Academic Excellence. Thanks to Ms Miller for her work in preparing the awards and congratulations to all students who were recognised earlier today. Our Assembly also provided an opportunity to present our annual Mount Carmel Community Award. This award recognises a member of our College Community is presented in recognition of service to the College, commitment to our Marian spirituality and the broader Mount Carmel community. This year’s recipient is Mrs Melina Trimarchi, a member of our Food Technology and Hospitality staff for the past 16 years. We thank Melina sincerely for her work which often goes unnoticed, extends far beyond the requirements and hours of her role and is always performed with the care and interests of all members of our community at the centre.
Next week will also see a number of activities being conducted which support the learning and wellbeing of students. These include:
- Year 7 English Bell Shakespeare Performance Monday Lessons 1 & 2
- Year 12 Parent Teacher Student Interviews Wednesday 4pm to 8pm
- CatholicCare Parent Information Evening Thursday at 7pm
Thanks in advance to all involved in the preparation and participation of these events.
We have been informed that as October 8, Interline Bus Services will no longer be operating in our area as their contract renewal was not successful. A new company, Transit Systems NSW Pty Ltd will take over operations from this date. There are currently no anticipated changes to the current school services. However, we will keep everyone up to date should there be any changes to services.

Father's Day Prayer
Praise Those Fathers
Let us praise those fathers who have striven to balance the demands of work, marriage, and children with an honest awareness of both joy and sacrifice.
Let us praise those fathers who, lacking a good model for a father, have worked to become a worthy and virtuous father.
Let us praise those fathers who, by their own account, were not always there for their children, but who continue to offer those children, now grown, their love and support. As well, let us pray for those fathers who have been wounded by words and actions of their children.
Let us praise those fathers who, despite marital discord, have remained in their children's lives.
Let us praise those fathers whose children are adopted, and whose love and support has nurtured a thriving life.
Let us praise those fathers who, as stepfathers, freely choose the obligation of fatherhood and earned their step children's love and respect.
Let us praise those fathers who have lost a child to death, and continue to hold the child in their heart.
Let us praise those men who have no children, but cherish the next generation as if they were their own.
Let us praise those men who have "fathered" us in their role as mentors and guides.
Let us praise those men who are about to become fathers; may they openly delight in their children.
And let us praise those fathers who have died, but live on in our memory and whose love continues to nurture us.
- Prayer of Kirk Loadman

It is important to note that there are a number of students who have excelled in individual subjects during Term 1 and 2. A common goal for everyone in this second half of the year is to be consistent across all courses with the effort and application applied to learning and to implement strategies to experience learning growth. This mindset of improvement certainly also applies to the students in Year 11 and 12 as they prepare for their upcoming HSC and Preliminary exams
Year 12 Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
Wednesday 6 September
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews provide an opportunity for parents, students and teachers to meet with their class teachers to review academic progress and discuss areas for growth. This conversation provides parents and students with valuable feedback and enables them to ask questions to support their child as they near the completion of their High School Certificate. Interviews for Year 12 2023 are being held on Wednesday September 6 between 4pm and 8pm in the Champagnat Centre. Further to the upcoming interviews, please note that Academic Reports will be distributed at the Graduation Ceremony and will be made available via Compass in Week 10. Bookings will close at 3pm on Tuesday 5 September.
Year 11 Preliminary Examinations
The Year 11 Preliminary Examinations will take place between Monday 11 September - Tuesday 19 September. Regular lessons will resume on Wednesday 20 September. Students have received the examination timetable.
Year 11 students are encouraged to make the most of the learning opportunities that this examination period can provide. This is an important time for them to exercise their focus on their learning goals and execute strategies to study and revise and work out what best works for them in preparing for examinations. Students are encouraged to continue to work with their teachers on revision, practise questions and to seek feedback. The Library is open on Tuesday afternoons between 3:00 -6:00pm, should students wish to utilise this space to study.

I hope the week has been a positive one for all families. As we approach the final three weeks of term three, I encourage parents to support their children in staying focused and resilient, especially when it comes to assessments, and final examinations for Year 11 and Year 12. Maintaining effort and cultivating a growth mindset can make all the difference.
Some helpful tips to support your child during this time. Encourage your child to:
- Stay organised: Create a study schedule to ensure they cover all their subjects and allocate sufficient time for revision.
- Set realistic goals: Break down their assessments into manageable goals, then celebrate small victories along the way.
- Embrace challenges: Have your child see challenges as opportunities for growth. Instead of fearing them, welcome them as chances to learn and improve.
- Seek support: Encourage your child to reach out to teachers or classmates if they are struggling. Asking for help is a sign of strength.
- Stay positive: Cultivate a growth mindset in your child by having them believe in thier ability to develop through hard work and dedication.
These last few weeks are a chance to demonstrate their commitment and determination. Find a way to support them to keep their eye on the prize, and they will finish the term stronger and more resilient than ever.
Thank you again for your ongoing support throughout the term to date. Please do not hesitate to contact the College should you require any support with your son or daughter’s learning and wellbeing.

Growing good Men:
Father & Teenage Son Weekend Experience
20-22 October 2023 Cataract Scout Camp Appin
One of the most important influences in the lives of men is the relationship they had with their father or significant father figure. The encouragement and affirmation that this relationship could, and should, provide is a key ingredient for how young men view themselves and embrace their gifts as they take their place in the world.
Don’t miss this life-changing father and son weekend! Spots are limited to just 25 fathers with their sons aged between 12 and 16 years. This is a unique opportunity for dads and their sons to embark on a quest of discovery with Robert Falzon and the team from menALIVE.

Big week of MISA sport this week with multiple teams playing for Grand Final positions. Congratulations to our 9/10 MISA girls' Netball team, 10/12 Girls Softball team, 7/9 girls' Soccer team, 9/10 boys Soccer team and the under 15s Rugby League team. Good luck to all teams on Tuesday who will be fighting for silverware and contributing to our overall MISA points to keep us in the lead to retain the Championship Trophy for 2023.
We have an exciting week in Week 8 with a Staff vs Year 12 competition scheduled. This kicks off on Monday with the year 12 Soccer team taking on the staff at recess. This will be followed up with Ultimate Frisbee and Basketball on Wednesday and Friday. This is a great way to farewell our year 12 cohort who have given so much to school through their own representation in MISA, Diocesan and NSWCCC sporting events.
SPORT | RESULT | MVP | Short Report |
Softball 10-12 Girls Mr Withnall GRAND FINALIST |
VS SBCC Win 7-5 |
Sienna Pavoncelli Rhianna Gascoine |
A very tense game this week. Truly palpable. A strong batting performance in both innings meant it came down to how well we could handle the pressure in the field. A few key position changes with Sienna taking up pitching relieving Rhianna and putting her at 3rd base, the perfect spot to take the final out whilst copping a tough blow in the play. The team truly has come a long way over the last 7 weeks and now play in the grand final against St Patrick's, the nemesis from round one. We'll be out for victory next week with a thirst unrivalled. |
Netball 7-8 Girls Ms Jefferys |
5th Place Pay off VS JTCC Loss 18-4 |
Not an ideal result for our final game of the season, however, the girls got out there and had some fun on the court. A special mention to Emma who showed true sportsmanship by cheering on the team from the sidelines and demonstrating flexibility by trying new positions.
Netball 9-10 Girls Mrs Armour GRAND FINALIST |
Semi Final VS SPT Win 33-28 |
We were on edge the entire game, maintaining just a slight lead at the end of each quarter. Excitedly, we held off St Pats and were able to secure our place in the Grand Final next week! Watch out Magdalene, we are determined to hold onto our title as Premiers for 2023.
Indoor Cricket 10-12 Boys Mr O’Connell |
Round 6 VS MAS Loss 144-0 |
Abdul Khan | It was a difficult day at the office for the year 10-12 Boys MISA Indoor Cricket team. Winning the toss and electing to bat, the boys had some difficulty in scoring any runs against a very strong Macarthur Anglican bowling attack. Unfortunately the boys weren’t able to capitalise on a number of opportunities which resulted in a total score of zero runs. The boys bowled well but the opposition was just too strong and scored a solid total of 144 runs. |
Soccer 7-9 Girls Miss Heath GRAND FINALIST |
Semi Final VS STP Win 3-1 |
Charlee Yule |
Girls came out with a bang and dominated possession, shots and chances created. The dominance was rewarded with a great performance ending with a 3-1 win. Congratulations on making the grand final. One more win to go! |
Soccer 7-8 Boys Mr King |
Semi Final VS THAC Loss 3-1 |
Tennyson King | An unlucky result for the boys who fought to the very end. Started the game under pressure with THAC having solid ball management throughout the first 10 mins. The boys fought hard and managed to work their way into the game but conceded on the run of play twice to 2 balls in behind and the pace of their stricker was just too much. Going into the second half MCCC scored early to set up an intense final 15 minutes. Another error at the back was tucked away and the game was done and dusted. Glimpses of what could have been. Now onto the 3rd place play off. |
Soccer 9-10 Boys Mr Berkeley GRAND FINALIST |
Semi Final VS MAG Win 2-1 |
Anthony Peric | Wow! What a performance. Tactically the boys did exactly as they were instructed. First half was an absolute dominant performance with a few shuffles in the starting line up. After a sketchy start, the boys bounced back strongly. The first goal came after an excellent follow up from a keeper fumble, and a brilliantly worked second goal after Anthony Peric sprinted 60m to win possession high up on the pitch. Second half we went into defence mode and managed the game right up until the final whistle. After conceding a goal, there were one or two other occasions that had our hearts in our mouths, but the boys finished off strong. Special mention to Antohlny Peric for a goal and an assist. Into the finals we go! |
AFL 10-12 Girls Mrs Abra
|
Semi Final VS THAC Loss 15-8 |
The Whole Team | A close game but the girls couldn't get the job done. Being favourites in this game the girls struggled to get the ball forward. This hurt them with THAC jumping ahead and holding onto the lead. A great effort. Onto the third place play off |
AFL 10-12 Boys Mr Kawa |
Semi Final VS JTCC Loss 39-17 |
Michael Bzdega | What a great effort from all the boys to put up a contest with the undefeated JTCC. Each player should be extremely proud of their efforts as they put JTCC to the test and asked many questions which needed answering during the match. Congratulations to all players involved and all should be extremely proud of their efforts. |
