Dear parents, friends, staff and students,
This Sunday is Palm Sunday and formally begins the Easter Week events. In the readings on Sunday, we hear the story of Jesus being welcomed into Jerusalem with a crowd laying palms before the King as He entered the Holy City. Within 5 days, they would turn against Him and this leads to His crucifixion on Good Friday. Each of the Gospels on Sunday (regardless of which year - A, B or C) follows the Passion of Jesus through the celebration of the Last Supper, His agony in the Garden, His torture and eventual crucifixion and concludes with the death and burial of Jesus. It is not until Easter Sunday that we even hear or consider the resurrection. This week is the pivotal moment in the Christian tradition and is the most important time for Catholics. Our reflection, sorrow and eventual celebration follows the normal ebb and flow of our lives and gives us time to reflect on our own experiences, behaviours and decisions. In the coming week, it would be opportune to reflect on when we have experienced excitement and exhilaration but also when we have been sad and mournful. Equally, it gives us the opportunity to consider when we have contributed to each of these times for others. Are we happy to be part of the crowd in the good times (such as Palm Sunday) but equally silent during the bad (Good Friday)? In all cases however, we are a people of hope where there will always be a new beginning and the resurrection of Easter Sunday. The true strength of our faith, however, is knowing that we have a loving God who is willing to sacrifice all for us.
This week the College ran a series of Harmony Week events. These ranged from music played over our speaker systems at recess and lunch to a whole school picnic on Friday afternoon where students were encouraged to bring food from their own cultural background and share it with their friends. This picnic took place during the student’s Pastoral Assembly period which was moved from lesson 1 to lesson 5. This enabled an extended lunch where the students could stop and take some calm time to share with others and experience a range of cultures. The students entered this with a great attitude and were rewarded with a unique experience. Thank you to the staff who organised and facilitated this especially Miss Toogood, Miss Nguyen and Ms Abra and our SRC leaders who ran the day.
On Wednesday of this week our College Captains attended a zoom with Bishop Brian and school leaders from other secondary schools within the diocese. This gave them the opportunity to share their thoughts and experiences of the start of Year 12 following the leadership retreat that they attended last year.
In the evening, we hosted the Marist Super Connect, which is a gathering of students from Marist schools across Sydney. This was the first time we hosted, and it was attended by around 100 students from six schools. The event was fun and engaging and the students rated it very highly. I would encourage students to take the opportunity to participate in this when it happens again later this year.
A few hours after this started, the English staff held a Parent Literacy evening for Year 7 parents in the English block. Over 70 parents attended, and the 9 English staff and support officers ensured a meaningful discussion occurred around the work that Year 7 classes are completing. Parents were able to borrow the novels that the students are reading so they can read along and discuss the books with their children. This is a part of the program that Mount Carmel won the award from the Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP) last year. It is a wonderful initiative and I thank Mrs Murphy and the English staff for the opportunity and their commitment.
A reminder that we are now accepting enrolment applications for Year 7, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to ensure all documentation is included with the application prior to it being lodged. The due date for applications is 2pm on April 12 (the last day of term 1).
As has been the case almost every week so far this term, we have again witnessed a range of initiatives, activities and events that have been held to support the learning, wellbeing and faith formation of our community. The past week has seen:
- Year 10 PASS Students support the running of the Holy Family Athletics Carnival.
- Marist Super Connect afternoon and evening on Wednesday, which saw over 120 students from Marist schools across Sydney meet at MCCC.
- Year 7 Parent Literacy Night on Wednesday night.
- Year 10 Food Tech incursion on Thursday.
- Year 12 VET Hospitality excursions on Thursday and Friday.
- Years 11 & 12 reports finalised and being written.
- Harmony Day celebration during lunch and Lesson 5 earlier today.
Thanks to all staff and students for their contribution towards the preparation, presentation and participation in each of these events.
Next week will also see more opportunities beyond the classroom that will support the holistic education of our students. These include:
- Year 7 Camps (2 groups between Monday and Wednesday)
- Marist Basketball Championships at the Gold Coast (Sunday to Thursday)
- Diocesan Rugby League selection trials (Wednesday)
- Year 12 Visual Arts “Art Express” excursion on Wednesday
- Whole College Liturgy on Holy Thursday.
Again, thanks in advance to all those involved with the organisation and participation with these upcoming events.
Thanks also to all parents and carers for your ongoing support with the faith, learning and wellbeing of all students. Please do not hesitate to contact your son or daughter’s respective Year Coordinator or Pastoral Advisor should you have any questions or require support.

Learning & Teaching at the College
Year 11 Term 1 Tracking Reports available via Compass
The Year 11 Term 1 Tracking Reports will be available via Compass today. At this point of the year, this tracking report provides an indicator of how a student is progressing with their course work. These reports provide an overview, with an A-E grade awarded for both the student’s Academic Achievement and Effort in each course. The pastoral report will provide an insight into how students are progressing in meeting the expectations of Year 11. The consideration and effort that goes into the creation of these reports ensures that they are a tool to guide improvement and learning growth. Students will have the opportunity to reflect on these during pastoral lessons.

Leader of Learning - Curriculum Pedagogy & Leader of Learning - Curriculum Administration
Acting Pastoral Care & Wellbeing Coordinator
In a world often marked by differences and divisions, there are moments that remind us of the beauty of diversity and the strength found in unity. Harmony Week, celebrated annually, stands as a testament to the shared values of inclusivity, respect, and understanding. This week-long celebration is not just about recognising diversity but also about fostering harmony among individuals from all walks of life.
At its core, Harmony Week embodies the belief that diversity is not a source of division but a wellspring of strength. It encourages people to embrace their differences and appreciate the richness that comes from cultural, religious, linguistic, and ethnic diversity. Through various events and activities, Harmony Week promotes dialogue, understanding, and respect among individuals of different backgrounds.
During Harmony Week, our community came together to celebrate their diversity through a myriad of activities. Cultural festivities, foods for all cultures, music and performances are just a few examples of the vibrant events that took place today at our College. These celebrations served as platforms for our students to share their traditions, stories, and experiences, fostering greater appreciation and acceptance of one another's backgrounds.
As we commemorate Harmony Week, let us recommit ourselves to the values of inclusivity, respect, and understanding. Let us embrace diversity as a source of strength and unity as a pathway to peace. Together, let us strive to create a world where harmony prevails, now and for generations to come.Thank you to our SRC leaders, Miss Nguyen, Ms Abra, Mr Follett and all the students who performed, supported and gave of their time to make this such a great experience for all.
NB! Photos to follow in next weeks edition.
Marist Super Connect
Marist Super Connect Occurred on Wednesday night involving a number of our Year 11 and 12 students working with students from other schools on the topic of where they can find the light of Jesus in their environments. It was a night of bonding, contemplation and conversation.

Wednesday evening saw the continuation of the Mount Carmel Home-School Literacy Partnership program – a collaborative venture which recognises and values parents as the primary and continuing educators of their children. This week’s Literacy Conversation afforded an opportunity for Year 7 parents, carers, and teachers to come together with the shared intention of maximising the learning outcomes of our young people.
Wednesday’s gathering saw over seventy parents and carers join with the Year 7 English teachers to discuss the nature of this school term’s teaching and learning focus and view an outline of the learning experiences that will follow in Terms 2, 3 and 4. The importance of reading, writing, and thinking was emphasised along with the privileging of physical books, pen and paper writing, and the enhancement of vocabulary and knowledge of the world. Parents and carers had the opportunity to sit in the refurbished E block classrooms and participate in writing, doodling, and journaling activities similar to those undertaken daily by their children. Questions were asked, suggestions were provided, and over forty popular novels were borrowed by parents to foster the enjoyment of reading the texts set for study in the subject English.
There will be other opportunities throughout the year to come together as a community and support the learning of our students. This week’s encounter came about because of the passion of parents and teachers, the encouragement and support of school staff in the provision of displays and refreshments, and the wonderful contribution of our faithful library staff who consistently give of their time and energy for the education and flourishing of our young people.

Week 7 was a reprieve in Diocesan Championship events with only girls Southern Country Rugby league trials being held in Canberra. We were lucky enough to have Leisl Hopoate selected to represent the Southern Country Rugby league team later this year. We also had a very successful round 4 of MISA this week with 5 of our teams getting important wins in their respective competitions. This is setting up an exciting finish with our teams in the mix to position themselves in finals spots to gain important points for the MISA championship trophy.
Upcoming Events
24 March: Marist Basketball Competition
5 April: Diocesan Football Championships
12 April: College Cross Country Carnival
Sport | Result | MVP | Short Report |
Volleyball Years 7-9 Boys NIMM |
VS MAS Win 3-0 |
Mike Mikaele |
In our round 5 fixture against Macarthur Anglican, the boys delivered a dominant performance, highlighting improved serving as well as communication. As a result the team placed immense pressure on the opposition from the start with better communication between the players enabling cohesive game play and teamwork to win all three sets. Our standout player and MVP this week was Mike Mikaele who demonstrated consistency in his setting and serving throughout the match. Fantastic effort boys, well done! |
Volleyball Years 7-9 Girls HOBR |
VS Loss 3-0 |
Alicia Lardizabal |
The Junior Girls Volleyball Team faced St. Patrick's and unfortunately conceded in all three games. Despite this, it was positive to see improvement in cohesion and teamwork during the third game. After the match, the team worked on refining their skills and court formation through a series of training drills led by senior students. Alicia Lardizabal earned the MVP title this week for her dedication and commitment in pursuit of each ball. |
Indoor Cricket Years 7-9 Girls OCOB |
VS WAC Win 70-61 |
Faith Chilufya and Chamaya Rajapakse |
The girls were feeling confident against a strong Wollondilly Anglican team. The girls lost the toss and were sent in to bat first. The team put on their best performance so far this season with some solid boundaries from Samantha Stewart and Chamaya Rajapakse posting an outstanding total of 70 runs, which is the team’s highest total so far this season. The girls went into bowl confident that they could keep the opposition to under 70 runs. There were some incredible catches from Faith Chilufya which kept WAC under the MCCC total. Congratulations to the girls on a voracious victory, it was very well deserved |
Basketball Years 10-12 Boys HARK |
VS BAC Win 35-37 |
Aneek Gamildien |
With this the last chance to have a run before leaving for the Marist Basketball Tournament we were looking to have a strong hit out. The opposition started fast and were hitting their shots and we were working hard to keep their big man at bay. We were down 23-16 at half time but with some excellent defence and improved offence led largely by the team captain Isaac Ramos we were able to get the win 35-37 in a very tight finish. The MVP for the game goes to Aneek Gamildien scoring 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 deflections. His defence getting multiple blocks on the opposing big man and hitting a big 3 to help get us back in the game and take the lead. |
Basketball Years 10-12 Girls ABRN |
VS MAS Win 24-5 |
Jemma Riordan |
A tough game today with the aggression displayed from MAC. Our girls were victorious however the MAC defence was difficult to penetrate. The foul count was high and that reflected the physical nature of the game. Our girls persisted with their passes, shots, screens and deflections. Congratulations to the whole team for their communication, resilience, skill and determination. |
Oztag Years 10-12 Boys KING |
VS MAS Win 6-3 |
Preston Gallant and Nicholas Lalic |
The boys senior OzTag team has secured their third consecutive victory by triumphing over Macarthur Anglican School (MAS) with a commanding six tries to three. Despite MAS having numerous chances to score through multiple sets, the boys displayed impressive defensive prowess, effectively thwarting their opponents' attempts. Preston Gallant and Nicholas Lalic stood out as the top performers on the field today, earning them the well-deserved accolade of Most Valuable Player/s. |
Oztag Years 10-12 Girls HEAS |
VS MAS 7-1 |
Liesl Hopoate |
A dominant performance by all 12 members of the team from start to finish. Liesl led the team and scored on the first possession, this continued throughout the match with 5 different try scorers. A key aspect of their win was their tenacity without possession with the marker often making multiple tags restricting Macarthur Anglican from getting any forward progress. Congratulations to the whole team for an outstanding team effort. |
Softball Years 7-9 Boys PONT |
VS MAG Loss 10-2 |
Jaiden Miles | The boys started slow but certainly turned it around in the third innings. Jivesh opened the innings with an incredible home run that set the tone for the rest of the team. Tennyson backed it up with his own home run. Keeden made it to second but unfortunately got run out after a skillful catch by the opposition. Jaiden was sneaky between the bases and ran home. Jaiden not only had a good game but is always a great team member who offers advice, acts as a base coach, will always put his hand up to try new positions and is constantly encouraging all of the boys. Well done Jaiden. Another shout out to our official base coach Parker who always offers his insights to the group. Bring on the final round. |
