Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
In the Gospel last weekend (Matthew 4: 1-11), we are told of the temptation of Christ whilst He spent 40 days in the wilderness reflecting and praying. During His time, the devil appeared to Him and promised riches and power in return for Jesus bowing down before him. We are told that Jesus resisted and eventually told the devil to leave. This story reminds us that temptation is a natural part of what we experience in our ordinary lives as humans. The fact that we are tempted is not the main focus, but the way that we react or behave as a result of that temptation becomes important. We each make decisions and sometimes we get those wrong and whilst there may be consequences for this, the question is how much we learn and grow prior to the next temptation. Lent is a time for us to reflect on our actions and to pray for strength and guidance from Jesus Christ.
Last Monday evening we held our Year 7 2021 Information session. With over 600 people in attendance, we were able to outline our College mission and expectations as well as highlight the many experiences and opportunities that are available to Mount Carmel students. When these evenings are held, it becomes apparent even to our leadership staff, the many great things that occur. I am grateful as always to the staff for their commitment and efforts but also to the many students who volunteered for the evening to show people around. Again, this is a reflection of the high esteem that members of our community hold for Mount Carmel. For those who were unable to make the evening and wish to apply for enrolment for Year 7 2021, application packs can be collected from the College office. The completed forms are due back at the end of this term.
Last Wednesday evening our Year 7 parents had the opportunity to attend the College for the first Year 7 Literacy evening. A number of our English staff explained their current programs in order to assist parents in knowing how to support their children. These presentations were warmly received and highlight the importance of working in partnership to provide students with the best opportunities. I thank Mrs Murphy and her staff in advance for their time, experience and effort in working closely with parents in this forum.
Also on Wednesday evening, a number of our students from last year’s HSC class were invited to a civic reception at Campbelltown Council to recognise their high achievement in the Higher School Certificate. This evening is the final recognition of their work and a fitting conclusion for their efforts from 2019. Thank you to the past students who attended along with our staff in support. Thanks also to Campbelltown Council and the Mayor, Cr George Brticevic for this community recognition.
On Friday we held our Staff Development Day where we focussed on the nature of feedback and the many forms that it takes within and outside the classroom. Staff reflection and professional development in this area is a result of our Strategic Improvement Plan for 2020 to continue to build a culture of learning within the students. This is something we have done well in the past and are looking to springboard into the future. The day provided for a worthwhile discussion and development of strategies.
A reminder that P&F meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month during term times at 7pm in room I3. All parents are warmly invited to these meetings. The next will be held on March 10 and will begin with the AGM.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio

2020 Mount Carmel Catholic College Swimming Carnival
The annual Mount Carmel Catholic College Swimming Carnival was held at Bradbury Swimming Pool on Thursday 27 February. The weather was perfect for a carnival - the sun was shining and the crystal clear water was enticing for our swimmers.
The Year 7 cohort were welcomed to the carnival with a vibrant grandstand and buzzing atmosphere. The Year 10 House Captains did a great job of showcasing the house spirit that we pride ourselves on at Mount Carmel by ‘decking out’ the grandstand in red, blue, green and yellow. As the Year 12 students arrived, more and more colour filled the pool area. The ‘hawaiian themed’ dress up was a great success and all of the Year 12 students got involved adding to the festivities on the day.
The day commenced with the 50m freestyle event. Throughout the day students were given the opportunity to compete in butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle varieties, including our ultra competitive relays that closed the carnival at the end of the day. We had some exceptional performances in the pool and the dedication and commitment that is required to excel in the sport of swimming was evident in many of our student athletes.
As well as our competitive races, our new Year 7 students were given the opportunity to compete and participate in a range of novelty events that were run by Mrs Tyra and Miss Vidovic. These activities offered our Year 7’s the opportunity to work together as a house, make new friends, be physically active and in some cases get soaked by our Year 12 student helpers. To end the day, all of our Year 7 students had the opportunity to be involved in the pastoral class noodle race which was loud, fun and full of splashing!
The points score changed multiple times throughout the day. There was one house in particular that had obvious swimming strength and talent in the younger age groups. This assisted in getting them over the line and being awarded the 2020 Swimming Champion House - congratulations to the Howard House for taking out the first carnival of the season!

The vibe was extremely positive on the day and this is due to not only the cooperation of our students but also the hard work on our staff and Year 12 student cohort throughout the carnival. I would like to thank all of our Year 12 students who ensured they were on time to their duty block and fulfilled their duty brilliantly. I would also like to thank all of the staff who volunteered their time on the day, whether it was as a timekeeper, student supervisor, starter, marshall etc. Thank you to the following staff members who made the carnival a great success; Miss Armour, Mrs Asuit, Miss Bowen, Mrs Cortes, Miss Donnellan, Ms Fyfe, Mr Harpley, Mr Harrison, Mr Huntly, Mrs James, Mr King, Mr Pilottis, Mr Quinn, Mr Teuma, Miss Toogood, Mrs Tyra, Miss Vidovic and Mr Withnall.
I would also like to take the time to thank all of our parent helpers on the day. Without your support and generosity the carnival wouldn’t have got off the ground. Thank you for your time and expertise on the day, it is greatly appreciated.
Let’s bring on the College Athletics Carnival on Monday 23 March to keep the good times going and the competitive spirit alive!
WATCH THIS SPACE - IMPORTANT INFORMATION The 2020 College Cross Country Carnival is on the last day of term - Thursday 9 April 2020 (Week 11). More specific details will follow in the coming weeks, but we wanted to advertise to parents / guardians that this College carnival has an early finishing time. Year 12 students will be dismissed at 1:45pm to avoid over congestion and traffic in the student / parent parking area. All other students (Years 7-11) will be dismissed at 2:00pm. If students are unable to make arrangements to accommodate this early finish time, staff supervision will be available at the College until normal afternoon buses arrive. |
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for next Tuesday.

DIOCESAN EVENTS – TERM 1
Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
DIOCESAN GIRLS TOUCH FOOTBALL
As always the Diocesan Girls Touch Football tournament is a great day that displays the touch football talent across all of the Diocesan schools. Mount Carmel sent three teams down to Fairy Meadow to compete for the 2020 title.
All of the students were keen to hit the field. We arrived early, got changed into our MCCC strip and started to warm up. Despite the lack of preparation and training prior to the carnival, all of the students worked well together and played for each other on the field.
Our U13’s team coached by Miss Donnellan finished 5th overall. Our U15’s team coached by Mr Huntly finished 8th overall. Our Opens team coached by Mrs Pontin also finished 8th overall.
The day was a challenging one due to the extremely warm weather and tight draw. Games were shortened to 10 minutes to accommodate for the excessive heat and the carnival concluded a little earlier than first scheduled to ensure the students weren’t competing in the hottest part of the day. Thank you to both Miss Donnellan and Mr Huntly for coaching our teams on the day and for all of your work with trials. Congratulations and thank you to all of the girls for their constant cooperation despite the challenging conditions and for the great day of sport. Well done!

2020 Opens Softball Trials
Congratulations to Paula Zaballero (Yr 10) for gaining selection into the Opens Girls NSWCCC Softball team. Paula attended the NSWCCC Softball trials last week and proved her worth as part of the Opens Girls squad who will compete later this year. Paula is an extremely humble athlete who doesn’t like to advertise her success, however we love celebrating the successes of our athletes and again congratulate Paula on such an excellent achievement. Well done Paula and we look forward to hearing how you play at the upcoming CCC tournament.
I would also like to extend my congratulations to the other students who attended the trials; Harrison Doris (Year 9), Mikayla Magro (Year 9).
NSWCCC Triathlon - Team and Individual Events
The NSWCCC team and individual triathlon events are growing in popularity each and every year. This year MCCC entered one team; Blake Waugh, Matthew Galvin and Vann English (Year 10 - Intermediate event) who had one of the most successful performances to date.
Blake started the team off well finishing the swim by coming out the water first in the intermediate division. Vann then set the tone for a successful race with a solid leg on the bike. Matt then finished the event strong with a solid and consistent run. The boys finished 13/282 overall and 4/47 out of the CCC teams. An outstanding result! Well done boys.
We also had three students compete in the individual triathlon event. Blake Waugh (Year 10), Joel Skipper (eaYr 9) and Nathan Williams (Year 7) all had a successful morning in the water, on the bike and on the road. Blake finished 20/224 and 5/40 in the CCC competition. Joel finished 11/149 and 2/30 in the CCC entries. Nathan finished 80/146 overall and 14/30 in the CCC competition. Congratulations to all of the students for pushing themselves out of their comfort zones and for competing in a challenging event like the triathlon. As always, you did MCCC proud.
Year 7 student Nathan Williams after his individual event
