Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”.
1 Samuel 16:7
Over the last few weeks, and in weeks to come, we have seen many reports of the impact of Coronavirus on people and their behaviour. When we are placed in times of stress, many of us will react in ways that are not necessarily our ‘normal’ behaviour. These behaviours can be channelled for the good of others or toward panic and negativity. The quote above from this Sunday’s first reading, reminds us that we are better than what people might see on the outside. What we have in our heart is who we are and we should be true to this, for the Lord “looks at the heart”. We are each encouraged over the next weeks and months to stay true to our heart and develop it with values based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.
At the start of this week, I sent a letter via Compass email links to parents outlining the Mount Carmel Catholic College response to the Coronavirus pandemic. This letter outlined some of the things we have done in terms of the postponement or cancelling of events and changes to routines. As I am sure you will understand, much of the current advice is fluid and will possibly change at short notice. Even within the current week, we have further taken the decision to postpone the College musical (set down for the first week of next term) and suspend sport on a Tuesday afternoon until further notice. As with all our decisions, current advice from the government, Health department, Diocese of Wollongong and Catholic Schools NSW is taken into account. Whilst these decisions will disappoint some members of our community, I am sure there is a recognition of the importance of the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff. The Diocese of Wollongong has developed a general information site which will be regularly updated. To access this site, please click on the following link:

On Thursday, there were a number of further decisions that have been made to help curb potential transmission amongst the students. Students have been informed of these in class meetings on Friday.
From Monday:
- students will not be permitted to bring sporting equipment to use at school during breaks (no basketball, touch, handball etc) and no playing of these games at school.
- They have been reminded of the hands off rule and the expectations around social distancing.
- The College gym will be closed and students are encouraged to go to the oval during breaks so they can get fresh air and sunlight.
- Teachers have been asked as far as rooms allow, to separate desks. Double door entrances to blocks are to remain open during the whole day to avoid students needing to push them open. In most cases, students will go straight to rooms without lining up and then will enter classrooms as they arrive.
- Students have been reminded that they are to bring their own stationery (no sharing of pens etc).
- For bus lines, students are to spread themselves across the entire Quad and up into the Year 10 area to ensure they have more space to spread out.
- Students are encouraged to bring bottles to school rather than drinking from the bubblers.
- There will be decisions made on an individual basis regarding potential risks in practical classes. Where these risks are deemed too great, the classes will be changed to theory or amended to ensure correct risk mitigation is applied.
In each case, these directives are aimed at reducing contact with others or with surfaces that may harbour a virus. As we are given new advice, this will be incorporated into any action plans. I thank the students, parents and staff for your ongoing understanding.
Throughout this current situation, I ask that you hold onto the thoughts of St Mary of the Cross McKillop who reminds us:
“Do all you can with the means at your disposal, and calmly leave the rest to God”.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal

DIOCESAN EVENTS – TERM 1
Mount Carmel is a part of the Diocese of Wollongong so we compete in Diocesan Sporting events throughout the college year. At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.
Below is information for the upcoming Diocesan events in term 1:
Term 1 Diocesan Team Information / Trials
NB: A second trial will only be organised if required. Students must attend the first trial to be considered for the team.

DIOCESAN SWIMMING CARNIVAL - Friday 13 March
The sun was shining, the students were pumped and the Diocesan Swimming Carnival was given the all clear to go ahead at Corrimal Swimming Pool on Friday 13 March 2020. The MCCC swim team travelled down to Wollongong to be a part of another impressive display of athleticism, commitment and teamwork. Guided by their knowledgeable Team Manager, Mrs Moore, the students competed in every event on the day, swimming their absolute best and representing Mount Carmel with pride in the water.
The swimmers from all of the Diocesan schools at the carnival stepped it up a notch from last year, something that most didn’t think was going to be easy, by breaking 16 records on the day. How is it that these swimmers are getting faster every single year? It was impressive to witness their effortless stroke plough through the water in each event.
Mount Carmel had some exceptional individual results with a number of our students being recognised in the Age Champion categories. Congratulations to the following students:

Well done to all of our Age Champions.
Congratulations to each and every one of the students who attended the carnival and embodied what it means to be a Mount Carmel student. The competition is always extremely tough and despite this, our students backed up, got in every race, swam with pride and worked together as a team. I couldn’t be any more proud of them. Well done.
Thank you to Mrs Moore for her expertise on the day and to Mr Pilottis for also attending and assisting the students. Thank you to Mrs Asuit, who despite having Friday’s off, travelled down to spectate and cheer on the MC students and finally to all of our parent spectators who supported our kids in the water. Thank you.
Unfortunately the NSWCCC Swimming Championships have been cancelled and will not be rescheduled. More information regarding this decision can be found on the csnsw.sport website.

Project Compassion, Week 3, brings you the story of Barry, a Gamilaroi man originally from western NSW. Barry is a father of four and he embodies resilience and strength. Growing up in a tough environment, he had to look inside himself to make the right choices for himself and his family.
Barry, and others like him, were able to take part in a cultural healing program called Red Dust Healing. This program encourages participants to examine their own personal hurt and allows them to heal from within, addressing family and personal relationships and what may have been life-long patterns of violence, abuse and neglect.
Your support of Project compassion can help build a brighter future for people like Barry through the Red Dust Healing program.

“At the Who We Are incursion it was a really good and fun opportunity to learn things about us as man or women. One of the things we focused on was the term "Man Up" and what this really meant. As the morning went by the presentation was getting more interesting. I really liked how the presentation was made and how well put together it was.” -Tyrone Austin, Year 8
“After attending the incursion this morning, I learnt that I don't have to be a certain body shape, have a particular look, wear particular clothes and act in a certain way to fit in. I can be myself and I will find the right friends to make me happy at school. I also learnt that I have the right to say no to anything that someone asks me to do that I don't want to do or don't feel comfortable with and if I ask for help it won't only help me but it may help others in the same situation.” -Charlotte Carney, Year 8
