Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
Over the last two weeks I have been transitioning back into the role of Principal at Mount Carmel. This follows a medical recuperation that had extended much further than I had initially expected. The last time I wrote to you, I introduced the idea of us moving to a digital newsletter. Whilst this seems so long ago, the College has continued in its normal path and our students have been achieving great academic sporting and cultural goals. In many ways this highlights the message that I raised at the start of this year; that routines enable us to build habits that can ensure success. Much of what naturally occurs in the day to day running of the College contributes to the continued success of our students.
Of course this is a very simplistic explanation of our student’s achievements. There is a great deal of experience, expertise and dedication from the staff who each and every day support your children. At the MacKillop Mass which was held today, I reminded the students of one of St Mary of the Cross’ quotes:
“Do all you can with the means at your disposal and calmly leave the rest to God”.
This quote reminds us that each of us has an obligation to use our talents to the best of our ability and make a positive difference to the world around us. We also need to be aware however, that once we have done our best, we need to relax in the knowledge that the result is in God’s hands. As I suggested to our students, working as hard as they can but then not stressing once the assessment task is completed, is one way to live this advice. We might also apply this advice to health or friendship issues or any number of other concerns that we face each day.
Upon my return, I was proud and impressed by the way that I was welcomed back into the community. Both staff and students went out of their way to come up and say hello and ask me how I was. This simple gesture is a very powerful representation of the community and family feel around the College. Thank you to our staff and students for your continued contribution to ‘community’. As a final thank you, I would like to acknowledge the teaching and support staff for their ability to continue the workings of the College. A special thank you to the College Leadership team and especially Mr Cloran and Mr Huntly who stepped up for three weeks that turned into three months. Your professionalism and experience have been invaluable.
Congratulations to all our Year 12 students on the completion of your trial HSC exams. Good luck to our Yr 11s who will be starting their final Preliminary exams in a few weeks. On both counts, the hard work and routines help to contribute to success. Remember, to do all you can with the means at your disposal and calmly leave the rest to God.
Ite in Veritate
Mr Steve Lo Cascio
Principal
Year 12 2019 Academic Medallions
Young People need to aim high and to know that their community support them. Our children are our most valuable resource and, all too often, their academic achievements can be neglected. We want to encourage learning and to reward as many students as possible.
To this end, I am asking for donations towards the Year 12 Academic Medallions. The cost of each medallion is $40.00 or three for $100.00. If you wish to donate towards a particular subject, please contact Trish Mooney on 9603 3000 or email info@mcccdow.catholic.edu.au.
It has been a very productive week at Peer Assisted Study, as Year 9 students prepared for their Mathematics Common Task during our Wednesday session. We were privileged enough to have a number of mathematics teachers and a senior student who took time out of their day to provide guidance and assistance to students during this busy exam period. The initiative continues to be supported by Year 9 pastoral advisors, including Miss Bowen and Miss Young.
Developed by the 9 Howard 1 Captains, key aims of the program include assisting students in maintaining good academic work habits, and providing them with the opportunity to demonstrate a consistent and applied approach to their learning. The program also promotes the academic culture of the College and allows students to gain a broader range of knowledge from a wider network of staff and students, work in a collaborative and supportive environment, and share their own skills and ideas with others in the cohort. Peer Assisted Study maintains a studious, purposeful and focused environment where students are able to catch up, revise and plan for upcoming assessment tasks if unable to do so at home.
We hope that this initiative can help Year 9 students find the help that they might need in the midst of all the chaos! Peer Assisted Study is available to all Year 9 students during recess on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in I3.

Mater Dei Feast Day - Immersion Experience 2019
In our world today , there are still opportunities to make a difference...to join the broader community; to break down barriers and showcase the "sameness" of humanity rather than to concentrate on the differences.
Face painting at Mater Dei Special school is one such opportunity.
On behalf of Mount Carmel Catholic College, I would like to thank the Year 9 Art students who volunteered to face paint at Mater Dei Special School Feast Day on Wednesday 31 July. Thank you to:
Hannah Caple
Abbey Carter
Hannah Dwyer
Caitlin Lo
Leidy Espinoza Costa
Sophie Nankervis
These students were exemplary in their conduct and were a credit to our College in both behaviour and attitude.
I would also like to thank our Acting Principal, Mr David Cloran, for embracing the opportunity to promote such community spirit.
Mrs Fitzgerald

Dear Parents and Friends,
Year 12 Creative and Performing Arts, Technology and Applied Studies students will be holding an Exhibition of their practical works. The occasion will be Monday 2 September, from 6.30pm - 8.30pm.
The evening will begin at 6.30pm with Music performances in the Champagnat Centre. After the performances, parents and friends are welcome to move to J Block to view the Visual Arts Bodies of Work. Finally, there is an opportunity to view the Design and Technology and Industrial Technology - Timber projects in the library.
Hope you can join us to celebrate the students’ talent and hard work.

Year 12 Hospitality Practical Assessment
The Hospitality - Kitchen Operations students created a delicious 3 course meal for 24 guests during the Trial HSC this week. The students planned the food orders, prepared and then presented for 2 dishes for each course of the menu. The students worked well together. They produced their delicious meals on time and cleaned the La Valla Centre before leaving. Throughout the 2 year VET course, the students have completed 7 major Assessment Tasks, 70 hours of Work Placement in local restaurants, clubs and cafes, multiple practical lessons and we are very proud of their efforts.
This course provides students with a set of very valuable skills demanded by the hospitality industry. These skills ensure they are capable to be employed in food establishments such as cafes, restaurants and takeaway business organisations now and in the future. These students can be proud of their fine efforts to produce a restaurant quality meal within the set deadline.
The menu:
Entree
- Crispy Fried Cheese Ravioli
- Pancetta wrapped Barbecued Prawns
Main
- Chicken and Broccolini Risotto
- Lamb and Sundried Tomato Filo Parcels
- Sauteed beans for the table
Dessert
- Sticky Date Pudding
- Fruit Tart

Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on Compass: Students are asked to check their compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the Sports Office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
All Tuesday Recreational Sport groups have now been finalised and added to the timetable and NO CHANGES CAN BE MADE - unfortunately students who did not take the time to complete their sport choices last year (Years 8-11) have been placed into an appropriate sport group for each term. Please check the relevant sports noticeboard and compass for your sport group in preparation for Week 2. As outlined in earlier editions of the newsletter there is a technical issue with compass and for some unknown reason all students sport is described as Sport: Fit HQ (or something else). Please ignore this description and refer to the code below this or check the sports noticeboards. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin or your Pastoral Adviser for clarification.
Mrs Tara Pontin (College Sport Coordinator)

At these events / carnivals, schools from the Diocese of Wollongong come together to compete for points towards the Vince Villa Trophy that is awarded to the Champion School at the end of the college year. Mount Carmel historically performs well at these Diocesan events and last year finished a close 3rd place overall in the Vince Villa Trophy.

DIOCESAN ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The Diocesan Athletics Carnival was held at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium on Friday 16 August. Mount Carmel had an enthusiastic team that was 83 students strong. The day was filled with nerves, personal best results, upsets and triumphs.
The day started with the 1500m event, an endurance event that tests the cardiovascular endurance of athletes, and finishes with the electric atmosphere that surrounds the 4 x 100m relays. All of our students were putting in 100% effort - Nathan Cann especially, winning his 200m heat with a nasty fall at the finish line, unfortunately ruling him out for the remainder of the carnival.
Mount Carmel students were represented in almost every single event on the day - a huge achievement and goal when wanting to earn valuable Vince Villa points. Many students ‘stepped up’ to replace students who were injured or unable to participate and the team mentality was certainly evident. Thank you to all of those students who participated in place of another student who was unable to - well done!
There were some phenomenal results for MCCC students throughout the carnival. These results have earnt the following students a position in the Wollongong team to compete at the CCC Athletics Championships later in the term - Blake Bolwell (1500m), Alexis Brunt (200m, 100m, discus and shot), Nathaniel Calvelo (200m, 100m, 400m), Nathan Cann (200m), Tye Fepuleai (High jump, triple jump), Matthew Galvin (1500m, 800m, 400m and Ben Kaufusi (shot)). Congratulations to these students and we wish you the best of luck when competing at the CCC event.
I would also like to mention our junior 4 x 100m boys relay team (Blake Bolwell, Joseph Spano, Tony Pholi-Pearce, Aaron Pereira) and our senior 4 x 100m boys relay team (Jabriel Kalache, Ben McEvoy, Nathaniel Calvelo, Josh Calleja) who both won their relay events on the day. Due to a change in the CCC format these teams will unfortunately not progress to the next stage, nevertheless they should be congratulated on a great race!
On the day students earn points towards the age champion awards. Alexis Brunt, Matthew Galvin and Nathaniel Calvelo all finished 2nd overall in their age group with Blake Bolwell finishing 3rd overall in his age group - all outstanding achievements. Well done! Mount Carmel finished 4th overall at the end of the carnival which is a true credit to the hard work and determination of our students. Congratulations MC!

NSWCCC Netball Championships
Despite the bus breaking down on the way to Penrith and causing us to be late to the carnival, students jumped off with excitement, quickly got dressed into their uniforms and ran onto the court with plenty of energy for their first round. This positive attitude, enthusiasm and drive to win continued throughout the day.
7 - 8 Junior Team (Championship Pool A)
Being placed in the Championship division following successful results at the Diocesan carnival last month the girls were versing the very best teams across the state. All games were incredibly tough with an exceptional display of talent, grit, creativity and determination. Accurate shooting under pressure, implementing set plays and a fierce full court defensive approach resulted in three wins and two marginal losses during the round games. This placed the team =2nd on points in their pool however 3rd on for and against. This resulted in versing Mater Dei Catholic College Wagga Wagga who had placed 3rd in Championship Pool B in which our girls took away the win with ease. We congratulate the girls on an exceptional result in placing 5th in their age group across all Catholic schools in NSW.
Coach: Miss Sarah Bowen
Players: Tyra Alesana, Isabella Ashcroft, Jessica Barnes, Courtney Hoban, Liesl Hopoate, Janita Leota-Brown, Hailee Meurant, Riley Perrett, Siu Richter.
9 - 10 Intermediate Team (Division 4)
Students played against seven other NSW schools ranging from All Saints Liverpool to St Johns Canberra. All games were competitive and allowed our students to work collaboratively as a team and to demonstrate their attacking and defensive skills under different pressure situations on the court. The team experienced three wins, one draw and three losses, placing fourth overall. The girls consistently displayed a high level of effort, skill and adaptability.
Coach: Mrs Denise Tyra
Players: Tahlia Bell, Clare Feiloakitohi, Sunshine Ferreiro-Deluca, Emma Gilbert, Cassandra Lloyd, Eseta Malaesilia, Shekinah Semaia, Abbey Smith, Jezal Taie, Javiera Vasquez Solanich
11 - 12 Senior Team (Division 3)
The CCC Netball Carnival was a fitting farewell for some of our seniors who have made significant contributions to the netball culture at Mount Carmel. With three wins and three close losses, the ladies kept their heads high and represented the college with pride. Our win of the day was against Santa Sabina College, at half time we were down by four and with some excellent defence and consistent turn overs we ended up defeating the opposition by one. A special mention to our Year 12s, Indiana Crowe (WD, GK), Emily Roach (WA, WD), Caitlin McGing (GD, GK) and Tiffany Mowlan (GA, GS). The Senior Team will not be the same without your energy, skill and optimism.
Coach: Ms Alison Armour
Players: Indiana Crowe, Rhianna Heaslip, Caitlin McGing, Marlou Mistula, Tiffany Mowlam, Emily Roach.
Thank you to the parents that attended and supported our girls, in particular to Mr Meurant who scored most of the Year 7 / 8 games. We were also very grateful to have the support of ex-students Alyssa Worland and Grace Stewart who assisted with coaching and umpiring on the day. Your support and encouragement is highly appreciated. We congratulate all teams for their effort, performance and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day and look forward to seeing the continued success of MCCC netball teams in the coming years.
Sarah Bowen, Denise Tyra and Alison Armour
