Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Mount Carmel,
“Whoever can be trusted in small things can also be trusted in big things”. Luke 16: 10
The above phrase was from last Sunday’s Gospel and is worth continually reflecting on. Whether we are considering our behaviours in general or in minute detail with those closest to us, the idea that trust is paramount in our lives is undeniable. Trust is also necessary in our global thinking. How do we deal with those less fortunate, with the environment, with the ridiculed, with the downtrodden? Do we consider the dignity of all we encounter when we make our decisions or do we break the trust we have with others. On Sunday Sept 29 (this coming Sunday), the church celebrates Social Justice Sunday. The Australian Catholic Bishops have released a statement called Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world. This statements looks at digital technology in our modern world and asks the question as to how we can foster genuine human encounter. I encourage parents and students to read this statement and reflect on what it offers.
On Wednesday of this week we had the final formalities for our Year 12, 2019 students. Every year, these events include a College Assembly where we recap the memories of the students over the past six years, a celebration of the Eucharist through a Mass with the students and their families, and a Graduation Ceremony where we acknowledge every student and highlight special achievements. These ceremonies involve great joy as we reflect on the growth and many positive qualities of these students. There is also however, a degree of sadness as we recognise that this represents an end to formal schooling and that these students will physically leave our community. One of the things that remains true is that whilst they leave our buildings and playgrounds, they will always remain members of the Mount Carmel Catholic College community. At the graduation I highlighted the four areas that we hope all graduating students of Mount Carmel will become. We hope they will always be people of; Faith, Integrity, Learning and Community. It is these values that we try to instil in our students and I am proud of how they have turned out. We wish every student success in their future and I ask you to keep them in your prayers as they build toward the HSC examinations.
At the farewell assembly, the leadership to our 2020 SRC was formally handed over. This handover is an important symbol that student leadership involves authority given from both the College and the student body. The 2019 SRC recognised these students and welcomed them into their new positions. I look forward to the formal badging of these students in term 4.
At the start of term 4, the Information Technology Support staff will move into the old Book Room in the library. This move is an attempt to make access to this support easier for the students both during lessons and during breaks. Overall, it continues our move to ensure that the library transforms into a resource hub where students might go to access assistance with research, Learning Support, IT, STEM and Careers/Transition. We will continue this process over the next few months.
As some of you may be aware, we have some staff changes that will occur at the start of next term. Mrs Merryl Tumeth has retired at the end of over three decades service to Mount Carmel. The staff farewelled her at the start of this week and her contribution to the College has been invaluable. I wish Mrs. Tumeth the best in her entry into retirement.
Mr Greg Lozelle will be taking Term 4 on Long Service Leave and will be replaced by Mr David Teuma in the library. This will also allow Mr Teuma (our IT Coordinator) to monitor the changes to IT and access for students whilst he is there.
Finally, I wish all students and families a happy and restful holiday period. As I have often said, a fundamental philosophy in Christianity is taking the opportunity to stop and reflect on what we do and how we do it. I encourage all students to take this opportunity and hope they come back refreshed and ready to contribute. I remind all that we will return in summer uniforms. Parents please check these over the holidays and be sure that any adjustments are taken care of prior to your child’s return.

This term Mount Carmel launched its first Minecraft based competition. This involved students using STEM based skills to recreate a scene from a book they had read. It required the use of both Literacy and Numeracy skills to complete the task. Over 3 weeks students worked both at lunchtime, in the STEM room, and at home to design, calculate and create what the authors had envisioned that we as readers would see in their words. And this is the key to what do in STEM, we bring imagination to life.
There were some absolutely mind blowing recreations of a plethora of different literary works, ranging from George RR Martin’s A song of Fire and Ice, Emily St John Mandel’s Station Eleven, Stephen King’s The Shining and Andy Griffiths Treehouse series.

During the month of September, multiple students willingly volunteered themselves to take part in Steptember which was a charity event for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance to help people living with Cerebral Palsy (CP). Cerebral palsy is the most common physical disability in childhood. One in two people with cerebral palsy are in chronic pain due to the tightening of their muscles and many will never be able to take a single step without assistance.
Students were assigned with the dedicated task to walk 10,000 steps for 28 days whilst culminating ways to fundraise money to help those who need it the most. This was not only an opportunity to increase physical activity but to be able to grow as a unique individual knowing through having the gift of walking, we are able to help others too.
This intricately relates back to being more thankful for what we have and help others through the gifts provided by God because we are all brothers and sisters who are instructed to help one another.
“Don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need.”
Hebrews 13:16
Every dollar raised goes towards providing vital equipment, therapy and services to those living with cerebral palsy, and/or contributes to groundbreaking research into the prevention and maybe even one day cure for CP!

19 October & 20 October is the annual Campbelltown 24 Hour Fight Against Cancer Walk. This event is an initiative which has been put into place in order to assist in the acquisition of funds to provide Campbelltown and Camden hospitals with much needed equipment and services to aid in the treatment and care of patients suffering from Cancer. This event is held at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium.
Members of our school community have decided to register a team this year in order to show our support for this cause. However, whilst the College supports the initiative under taken by students to walk for cancer, there will be no teacher supervision provided for the event. If you are interested in being a part of the MCCC team on the weekend please contact Miss Toogood via email at toogoodr01@dow.catholic.edu.au or speak to College Spirituality Captain Anthony Wicks at school for information.
Visit the official site for more event information:
I have just been advised by Envision Hands that they are no longer taking the lids we have been collecting as they have been inundated and are unable to process any more.
Since we began this initiative during Lent, we have collected 5 large recycling bins full of lids contributing to the 2 million lids they have received, with their target being 1 million.
I would like to thank all the staff, students, parents and Mount Carmel community for their support as it was overwhelming and humbling to see this initiative succeed
in the way that it did.
Thank you all so much.

Below are some general policies that the College enforces in regards to sport.
Student sport groups on Compass: Students are asked to check their Compass for their sport group allocation. This is now ‘locked in’ and unfortunately can not be changed as selections and changes are now closed. It is important that students attend the correct sport group to ensure that they are accounted for and supervised for the afternoon of sport. If they attend the incorrect group they will be marked as ‘absent’ from the group where they are supposed to be and this will affect their attendance record. Please make sure you are attending the correct group each week.
Also as mentioned at previous assemblies and meetings please ignore the large sport description on your Compass page (according to this every student is in Fit HQ and this is an error) . Refer to the code below this description for your sport allocation. If you have any questions please see Mrs Pontin at the Sports Office.
Leave from venue notes: A reminder that if students wish to leave from a venue they need to supply the Sport Coordinator. Notes can be signed at the sports office before, and up until, recess on Tuesday. A sample note is included below.
Date To Whom it May Concern, I (parent / guardian name) give permission for my son / daughter (child’s name) to not return to the College at the conclusion of sport this afternoon. Kind Regards,
(Parent / Guardian signature) (Contact Number) |
Any other notes on Tuesdays: If you are sick, injured or can’t participate in sport on a Tuesday you must have a signed note from your parent/guardian detailing the reason for non-participation. You must bring this note to Mrs Pontin (Sport Coordinator) during recess on Tuesday so an alternate plan can be arranged for you during sport time.
TUESDAY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY NOTICES
If students do not participate in the MISA sport program they are involved in the college’s Tuesday Recreational Sport program. This program offers students the opportunity to be active in a variety of different sports / activities either at school or in the local community. Students in Year 7 rotate with their house group through 4 different activities (a different activity each term). All other grades have the opportunity to elect what sport program they would like to participate in each term. This choice gives students the responsibility to be active according to their own interests, likes and strengths.
Students are asked to check the relevant sports noticeboard for their term 4 sport group in preparation for next term. Changes to sport groups can be made up until the end of term.
